By Goh Sui Noi, The Straits Times , 5 August 2000 President Chen is actively promoting Taiwanese culture, which he says is distinct from that which exists on the mainland. This view worries Beijing. He described the main characteristics of Taiwanese culture as pluralist, indigenous and international. Speaking at a culture camp in the southern county of Tainan, the President pointed out that Taiwanese culture was the root of Oceanic culture and said that Taiwanese must have confidence in themselves. He emphasised cultural development as the most important aspect of nation-building, adding: We must study how culture can take root and germinate on this land. He further urged that past local literature be raised to the status of representative literature of Taiwan. wealth of diversified cultural elements local cultures The President, who is from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, had promoted local Taiwanese culture when he was mayor of Taipei in 1994-98. He changed the name of the boulevard in front of the presidential office from Chieh-shou Road, meaning long life, to Kaitegalan Boulevard, the name of the first aboriginal tribe to inhabit the island. In the final term of his presidency from 1996 to 2000, the fiercely nationalistic Mr Lee tried to forge what he termed a

Taiwan was 'ceded in perpetuity' to Japan by Article 2 of the Treaty of Shimonoseki. Although it was fiercely resented and actively resisted by the population, Taiwan remained under Japanese rule from 1895 until its defeat at the end of World War II. Finally, in March 2000, the main opposition party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), gained control of the presidency through its candidate Chen Shui-Bian. Experience Taiwan Culture in Paper Workshops Back This summer paper artist Joanne Kaar is introducing the culture of Taiwan to the highlands of Scotland through a series of workshops she is running with Taiwan design student Ding-Way Lin. Joanne met Ding-Way last year when she was artist-in-residence at the Chaoyang University of Technology in Taiwan. During her residency she learned traditional eastern papermaking techniques and taught students western papermaking techniques as well as being invited to hold an exhibition of new work at the Su-Ho paper museum in Taipei. She was guided throughout her visit by Ding-Way which enabled her to experience the culture of Taiwan, and now he has chosen to visit Scotland during his summer vacation. This is his first visit outside Taiwan and his brother has paid for the travel costs. The Taiwan Experience, a cultural experience in the uses of paper for crafts and traditional festivals, is partly funded by HI-Arts, and organised by Arts Play Highland. Events are taking place between 11 July and 2 September 2005 in North Uist, Tobermory, Caithness, Sutherland and Inverness. Shaped like a sweet potato, Taiwan is a large island southeast of China, separated by about a hundred miles of the Taiwan Straits. Together with the islands of Kinmen, Matsu and the Pescadores, the total area is about 14,000 square miles, the same size as the Netherlands, or roughly the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut combined. Situated between Japan and the Philippines, Taiwan is located on the rim of the Eastern Asian Continental Shelf. At almost the same latitude as Hawaii, Taiwan is on the Tropic of Cancer. The subtropical climate produces a temperature of 20+ degrees C on the average. Rainfall is abundant with a summer monsoon season. The growing season lasts all year round. Species of wildlife are countless in variety. Many high mountains with active volcanoes dot the relatively young geological stratum. Resorts built on hot springs have turned into major tourist attractions throughout Taiwan. Click here to return to the top of the page

The Chinese, by no means at a loss for vivid description, describe their cuisine as an 'ancient art of ultimate harmony: pleasing to the eye; mouth-watering; and a delight to the palate' . Cooking styles come from all over China including Canton, Hunan, Mongolia, Peking, Shanghai, Szechuan and Taiwan. Cantonese food is more rich and sweeter than that of other regions. Dishes consist of fried shrimp with cashews, beef with oyster sauce, onion-marinated chicken and sweet-and-sour pork. Pastries include buns, steamed dumplings stuffed with meat, sweet paste or preserves, deep-fried spring rolls and tarts.

World rover scouts attend 'exploration trip' on Taiwan culture
Nearly 300 rover scouts from around the world took part in a fact-finding "exploration trip" on August 1 to gain a better understanding of Taiwan's traditional customs and culture. The event was part of the 12th World Scout Moot that opened in Taipei on August 1 with around 2,500 rover scouts aged 18-26 from 92 countries participating, the first of its kind in Taiwan in the history of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement. During the exploration trip, jointly organised by scout groups from Shih Hsin University, National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University and Chinese Cultural University, the scouts toured the National Palace Museum to appreciate the beauty of Chinese culture and attended an event similar to a traditional fair held at a temple to worship the deities. The scouts will also visit several domestic social welfare organisations, such as the Republic of China Cultural and Educational Foundation for the Blind and the Creation Social Welfare Foundation, to participate in social services. On August 4, the scouts will converge on the campus of National Dong Hwa University in Hualien, eastern Taiwan, for seven days of exchanges of information about global development, the environment, health, human rights, science and technology, Taiwan culture and world peace.
