Taiwan Time and Date Taiwan Culture Back to Top A large majority of people on Taiwan speak Mandarin Chinese, which has been the medium of instruction in the schools for more than four decades. Native Taiwanese and many others also speak one of the Southern Fujianese dialects, Min-nan, also known as Taiwanese. newly there has been a growing use of Taiwanese in the broadcast media. The Hakka, who are concentrated in several counties throughout Taiwan, have their own distinct dialect. As a result of the half century of Japanese rule, many people over age 60 also can speak Japanese. The method of Chinese romanization most commonly used in Taiwan is the Wade-Giles system. In 2002, Taiwan authorities announced adoption of the pinyin system also used on the Mainland to replace the Wade-Giles system. Taiwan's culture is a blend of its typical Chinese heritage and Western determines. Fine arts, folk traditions, and popular culture embody orthodox and modern, Asian, and Western motifs. One of Taiwan's greatest attractions is the Palace Museum, which houses over 650,000 pieces of Chinese bronze, jade, calligraphy, painting, and porcelain. This collection was moved from the mainland in 1949 when Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan. The collection is so considerable that only 1% is on display at any one time.

The Beauty of Taiwan's Culture Taiwan is a multicultural country. From a cultural anthropology perspective, Taiwan¡¦s aboriginal people share a common heritage with those of the South Pacific islands. They flourished in the mountains and along the plains bordering the ocean, developing a mountain/oceanic culture. Over the past several hundred years, Han Chinese culture was added to the mix, as Chinese immigrated to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland. At various intervals, the Dutch, Spanish and Japanese have colonized Taiwan, bringing with them their own cultural influences. After World War II when Taiwan emerged from Japanese colonial rule, the Nationalists lost the Chinese civil war and retreated to Taiwan in 1949. Soon after, the Korean War erupted and Taiwan became a key link in the line of defense against socialism in the Western Pacific during the Cold War. Up until the mid-1960s, Taiwan received military and economic assistance from the United States. This was a period of Americanization inTaiwan.

Taiwan's "Cultural Independence" Betrays Its Roots
In order to split the motherland, the Taiwan authorities have asserted Taiwan's cultural independence, stating that Taiwan is a "maritime state of immigration" with a history of only 400 years, and the Chinese culture is only a branch of Taiwan culture. They even want to establish "Taiwan dialect" as their "national language" and create their own written language. The so-called "Taiwan dialect" consists of four dialects: traditional native, south Fujian, Hakka and Beijing (modern native dialect) dialects. Meanwhile, they also talk about "Taiwan nationality," "Taiwan history" and "Taiwan geography." "'Taiwan cultural independence' is actually a kind of treason, betraying Chinese culture. It is a serious crisis and disaster in terms of China's cultural history," Guo said. Guo regards Taiwan's crisis of identity, with its cultural identification at the core, as a serious problem for Taiwan. The crisis will be developed into a national identity, which suits the ambition of the Taiwan authorities. Taiwan has been a component of China since ancient times. Compatriots in Taiwan are as close to people in Fujian, especially in south Fujian, as flesh and blood. This is the objective reality and cannot be denied. Like Fujian Province, Taiwan is a component of China. "The mainstream of Taiwan culture is only a part of south Fujian culture, whose matrix is Chinese culture," Guo added.

He disassembles everyday electronic appliances, devices and reassembles selected parts with dissected household plastic materials. The result of these combinations forms a kinetic cause and effect system that interacts with the viewer. Through the use of remote controls, sensors, and repurposed interfaces, viewers can interact with these hybrids of technology and environment. Huang was born in Taiwan in 1975. He is currently living and working in New York. He received a BFA from University of California San Diego and a MFA from School of Visual Arts in New York.
