Tahiti and French Polynesia Guide
Better known by the name of its main island, Tahiti, French Polynesia is actually made up of five island groups: the Society Islands, Austral Islands, Marquesas Islands, Tuamotu atolls and the Gambier Archipelago, also known as the Mangareva Islands. We'll show you the best places to stay and dine as well as the best things to see and do while you're vacationing in French Polynesia.
Alphabetical
Recent Finding Tahiti’s Hidden Paradise Islands - Huahine - Raiatea - Taha’a - The Tuamotu atolls Relatively unchanged by the modern world and long considered as some of French Polynesia’s "best kept secrets," the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Taha’a, and the Tuamotu atolls lure travelers for their authentic Polynesian appeal, enhanced by world-class resorts, international cuisine and pure uncrowded beaches. Tahiti and Her Islands at a Glance Tahiti. The word evokes visions of an earthly paradise. Actually there are 118 islands that encompass French Polynesia, better known as Tahiti and Her Islands. We offer an overview of some of travelers’ favorite islands and what they have to offer.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Tahiti - Culture Tahiti , often called "The Island of Love" , is the largest of the 118 Islands and atolls that comprise French Polynesia. The 1,042 sq. km. (402 sq. miles) of Tahiti's surface area consists of mountain peaks reaching over 2, 000 meters ( 7,000 ft.) into a lei of wispy clouds; deep green valleys covered with rainforests and soft ferns, waterfalls cascading into cool sweet rivers and streams and flat coastal land, with luxurious tropical vegetation. Around Tahiti-Nui (big Tahiti) a 114 km. (71 miles) road winds between the mountains and the sea. And on the peninsula of Tahiti-lti (little Tahiti) the road continues down each coast for 18 km. (12 mile). An interior road leads past dairy farms and citrus groves to a panoramic view on the Plateau of Taravao-the isthmus that connects the two Islands. Papeete , the bustling capital of Tahiti and Her Islands, contains the territorial government offices, gendarmerie, hospitals and clinics, banks, telecommunications center, airline and travel agencies, boutiques and black pearl shops. International cargo freighters, copra schooners, luxury liners and sailing yachts share the harbour. A modem city, it hums with happy voices as the daily drama is staged. Tahiti , however, offers enough interesting excursions and sites to make it worth a short stay.

The People

The 1988 population census found a total of about 190,000 people in French Polynesia. However the criteria used for defining the racial groups can only approximate a breakdown of: 70% Polynesian, 12% European, 10% Polynesian/European, five per-cent Chinese, and three percent Polynesian/Chinese. All are French citizens. The 1988 population figures for the five administrative subdivisions are Windward Islands 140,341, Leeward Islands 22,232, Austral Islands 6,500, Tuamotu/Gambier Islands 12,374, Marquesas Islands 7,358. About 70% of the total population lives on Tahiti. The indigenous people of Tahiti-Polynesia are the maohi or Eastern Polynesians (as opposed to the Western Polynesians in Samoa and Tonga). Racial intermariages are commun and many Tahitians can claim French, Chinese, American and Polynesian ancestry. This accounts for the physical beauty of the inhabitants and the total abscence of racial prejudice, either from the Europeans or the Tahitians. Education
Formal education is mandatory in Tahiti for every child to the age of 14. Primary education begins at age five, and continues to the age of 12, when children begin secondary education.

In the time of 1000 B.C. Southeast Asian immmigrants arrived in the Samoan islands and from there they settled the rest of Polynesia.

However, there are some common threads. All the islands employed a chiefly system based on traditional legends of migration and settlement. These stories enshrined the power of the chiefs as inheritors of what might be termed an "heroic" culture.
From time to time theories have been advanced that Polynesian culture before European contact was similar to that of the heroic period of Greece, that is, pre-dating Homer around 1200 BC. Some of these parallels include the concept of ' mana ', kinship, feasting and the giving of food, attitudes towards women and the lack of individualism.

Tahiti History and Culture History
Around 4000 BC, a great migration began from Southeast Asia across open ocean to settle the Pacific Islands. Many researchers conclude that Tonga and Samoa were settled around 1300 BC and from here colonization voyages were launched to the Marquesas Islands in about 200 BC. Over the next several centuries, great migrations to colonize all the Tahitian islands and virtually the entire South Pacific took place.

James Cook brought back thousands of illustrations of Tahitian flora and fauna as well as the first map of the islands of the Pacific. In the 1800s, the arrival of whalers, British missionaries, and French military expeditions forever changed the way of life on Tahiti and created a French-British rivalry for control of the islands. The Pomare Dynasty ruled Tahiti until 1847 when Queen Pomare finally accepted French protection of the islands of Tahiti and Moorea.

The Public and Private Divide When I read of Levy's description of various explorer's first impressions of the Tahitians I was stumped. In sharp contrast to this sense of deceptive, private personality contortion, in the rural villages of Roto and Piri, he later explains that there is little sense of privacy. Members of a family or friends even if they are of mixed sexes, may urinate in sight of one another and occasionally groups of the same sex will defecate within sight of one another. It is good manners for others to avert their gaze. The First Metrosexual?
