    Travails with Tagalog language
    By Antonio J. Montalvan
UNTIL now, there is no such thing as a "Filipino" language. The constitutional mandate to develop a Filipino language as the medium of instruction in schools has not been accomplished yet. In that sense, I can sympathize with GMA's order to suspend the use of "Filipino" as the medium in academia. My sympathies, however, end there. What we do have at the moment is not "Filipino" but Tagalog, a regional language that is spoken in that part of the country where the capital city is. Tagalog is the lingua franca of Manila and its environs. In that sense, it is and was practical for our national leaders, many of whom are or were native Tagalog speakers like Quezon. But because we are a multi-cultural nation, it is not the lingua franca elsewhere.

    History
The word Tagalog was derived from tagá-ílog , from tagá- meaning "native" and ílog meaning "river", thus, it means "resident beside the river." Since there are no written samples of Tagalog before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, very little is known about history of the language. However there is speculation among linguists that the ancestors of the Tagalogs originated, along with their Central Philippine cousins, from northeastern (The second largest island of the Philippines at the southern end of the archipelago; mountainous and volcanic)

As the language of Manila, the capital and chief city of the Philippines, Tagalog has long had an importance outside its own speech area. With vocabulary enrichment from other Philippine languages, it has been made the basis of Pilipino, the national language; widely used in education and the media, Pilipino is now understood by more than 60% of the Philippine population. Though a script ultimately of South Asian origin was in use for Tagalog in the 16th century ( see Indic writing systems ), all recent literature in the language has utilized adaptations of the Latin alphabet

    History
The Negritos are believed to be the aborigines of the Philippines. In 1911, they were described as follows:
The men are about 4 ft. 10 in. average height, the women are shorter. Their colour is black, their skull decidedly round, their hair frizzy, their legs thin, their toes prehensile. They tatoo themselves and wear only a g-string. They have no fixed abodes but roam about in groups of a few families. They are skilful with the bow and in throwing stones, and they can easily kindle a fire, even in the wet season, by rubbing together two pieces of dry bamboo. Their food consisted principally of game, roots, and wild fruits. The women, who do all the work, collect wax and wild honey, which are their principal staples in trade. Few Negritos live to be fifty years of age.
