Overview of the Tagalog Language
Tagalog (ta-GA-log) is the national language of the Republic of the Philippines. It was officially renamed Pilipino in 1961. Today, it is taught in the elementary and secondary schools of the Philippines, where it is spoken by approximately 45 million people. In the United States, there are at least 900,000 speakers of Tagalog.
The Tagalog people migrated to the island of Luzon from the Malay Peninsula and settled around the area which today encompasses the city of Manila. Tagalog was selected as the national language of the Philippines in 1946 because it had a rich literary tradition, it was the most widely spoken language in the Republic, and it was considered the language of the revolution against colonialism.
Tagalog is a member of the Western group of Malayo-Polynesian languages. The Malayo-Polynesian languages are unique and do not appear to be related to any other language group. Other Malayo-Polynesian languages include: Malagasy, Malay, and Indonesian.
Other languages of the Philippine Islands include: Visayan, Pampangan, Bikol, and Ilocano. As a result of rule by the United States from 1899 to 1941, English is widely spoken and serves as a second official language.

Dear Sir,
Tagalog Language Home Page is the most comprehensive self-learning site on Tagalog. The lessons are very well structured and the explanation are very clear and lucid. The clarity of the vocal section is excellent.
As learner without any prior knowledge of Tagalog, I found it most educational and was able to comprehend written Tagalog within a week of learning from this site.
Suggestion: I think the site is meant for student of Illonios University. Though it permits others to take part in some of the quizzes, I wish it would allow people like me to register and avail ourselves of lots of other features currently closed to us. I am quite prepared to pay a registration fee.
Thank you.

History
The word Tagalog was derived from tag¡-log , from tag¡- meaning "native of" and log meaning "river", thus, it means "resident beside the river." Since there are no written samples of Tagalog before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, very little is known about the history of the language. However there is speculation among linguists that the ancestors of the Tagalogs originated, along with their Central Philippine cousins, from northeastern

Introduction Tagalog, with the stress on the second syllable, is the national language of the Philippines. In 1962 it was made the country's official language and given the new name of Pilipino. Tagalog is the mother tongue of about 15 million people, most of whom live in southern Luzon in an area that includes Manila. Its study has been strongly encouraged by the government and it is estimated that over 75 percent of the population at least understands the language. Tagalog is a member of the Malayo-Polynesian family of languages. The three centuries of Spanish rule in the Philippines left a strong imprint on the vocabulary.

Pilipino: The National Language
a historical sketch
O n November 12, 1937 , the First National Assembly approved a law creating a National Language Institute to make a study and survey of each of the existing native dialects, with a view to choosing one which was to be used as a basis for the national language of the Philippines. The then President Manuel L. Quezon appointed to compose the Institute, Jaime C. De Veyra, as chairman, representing Samar-Leyte-Visayan; Santiago A. Fonacier, representing the Ilocano regions; Filemon Sotto (Cebu-Visayan); Casimiro Perfecto (Bicol); Felix S. Sales Rodriguez (Panay-Visayan); Hadji Butu (the Muslims) and Cecilio Lopez (Tagalog), as members. After serious deliberation on the studies conducted, and in compliance with the conditions and procedures to be observed in the discharge of its duties, the Institute selected Tagalog to be the basis of the national language. Thus on December 31, 1937, President Quezon proclaimed the language based on Tagalog as the National Language of the Philippines.
The reasons why Tagalog was so chosen were the following: 1. Tagalog is widely spoken and the most understood in all the regions of the Philippines;

The Tagalog Language
by First Lieutenant W. E. W. MacKinlay
T agalog is the most important of the many tongues and dialects of the Philippines on account of its being widely understood, and the most developed by contact with foreign idioms. Spoken by over ten million of an energetic race in the islands occupying the capital city of Manila, eight provinces surrounding the metropolis, and a number of outlying islands and districts beyond these limits, it is also generally understood by many far beyond its own territory, especially in seaport towns throughout the archipelago. The language seems to be divided into a northern and a southern dialect, the former being spoken in Bulacan, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Rizal, and parts of Tarlac, and the latter occupying La Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Tayabas, Marinduque, the coast of Mindoro and part of the Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur. Dialect differences though can only be distinguished by local mannerisms in pronunciation but very seldom in meaning. The Japanese language seems to have furnished no words to the Tagalog although many Japanese came to the Islands during the seventeenth century owing to the expulsion of Japanese converts to Catholicism, who found a refuge in Manila and the adjoining provinces, mainly in Pampanga. Notwithstanding a comparatively close contact with the Chinese for several centuries and certainly antedating the Spanish conquest by many hundred years, the Chinese element in Tagalog seems limited to a few commercial terms, some household implements, and a few miscellaneous words.
