After he became president, Taft so disappointed his predecessor and former mentor that Roosevelt bolted from the Republican party to form his own "Bull-Moose" party, dividing Republican voters and creating an opening for Democrat Woodrow Wilson in the 1912 presidential election. Taft’s lifelong ambition was to serve as Chief Justice of the United States, to which he was appointed after leaving the presidency. He remains the only man in American history to have gained the highest executive and judicial positions.

Building the Library

Creating the Neighborhood Libraries

The history of The New York Public Library begins more than 100 years ago. As the 19th century drew to a close, New York, the greatest city in America, still had no real public library. But thanks to a handful of visionaries and millions upon millions of users, The New York Public Library today is internationally recognized as one of the greatest institutions of its kind. The Library's importance is a function not only of its sheer size and scope, but also of its unique character. It is the only library that features both world-acclaimed research centers and a large network of neighborhood branch libraries, all of which may be used by the public, free of charge. The Library is also distinguished by its long-standing tradition of serving the local community, as well as the international world of learning. Its branch system is one of the largest in the world. Computer technology makes its catalogs of holdings accessible to users worldwide. The Library's collections themselves reflect the profoundly democratic and all-encompassing nature of the institution. Numbering into the tens of millions, its holdings range from the most venerable monuments of human culture such as the Gutenberg Bible and Jefferson's manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence to materials that document the everyday lives of otherwise anonymous people.

At the Democratic convention in Denver, William Jenning Bryan once again received the nomination on the first ballot.
The campaign got off to a slow start, Taft was not an enthusiastic campaigner, and Bryan did not seem as driven as he had in the past. Under President Roosevelt's prodding Taft became more engaged in the campaign. The major issue of the campaign was who could best carry out the vastly popular policies of Roosevelt. Although Taft was Roosevelt's hand picked successor, Bryan claimed that he was more likely to continue Roosevelt's policies. Bryan made a major mistake when he called for the socialization of the railroads. Taft won an overwhelming victory. Participation of Eligible Voters: 65.4%

President Woodrow Wilson: Address to the Convention of 1916
A scant six years before Woodrow Wilson gave the moving address reprinted below, William Howard Taft had made the first presidential appearance before the National American Woman Suffrage Association Convention. Wilson's speech presents a remarkable contrast to Taft's. Though his last word is "wait," an unacceptable suggestion to those who had been working hard for so many years, Wilson makes his respect and admiration clear. Madam President, Ladies of the Association: I have found it a real privilege to be here tonight and to listen to the addresses which you have heard. Though you may not all of you believe it, I would a great deal rather hear somebody else speak than speak myself, but I would feel that I was omitting a duty if I did not address you tonight and say some of the things that have been in my thoughts as I realized the approach of this evening and the duty that would fall upon me. The astonishing thing about the movement which you represent is not that it has grown so slowly but that it has grown so rapidly. No doubt for those who have been a long time in the struggle, like your honored president, it seems a long and arduous path that has been trodden, but when you think of the cumulating force of the movement in recent decades you must agree with me that it is one of the most astonishing tides in modern history. Two generations agono doubt Madam President will agree with me in saying thisit was a handful of women who were fighting for this cause; now it is a great multitude of women who are fighting for it. There are some interesting historical connections which I should like to attempt to point out to you.

Presidents represented in the new suites include James Madison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson, selected because each enjoys a unique connection to The Homestead. within Presidents all of American Experience On October 14, 1912, Progressive party presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt delivered one of the most remarkable campaign speeches in American history. Wounded in the chest by the bullet of a would-be assassin, Roosevelt spoke passionately and eloquently for ninety minutes, extolling the virtues of Progressivism to a crowd in Milwaukee. While Roosevelt's campaign would ultimately fail, this moment, brimming with blood and passion, represented one of the finest hours of a man who, from the moment he entered presidential politics, made his life a continuous campaign. As a vice-presidential candidate in 1900, Roosevelt stumped tirelessly for his Republican running mate

Updated - Saturday, 27 December, 2003 Reproduced below is a speech given by former U.S. President William Howard Taft at Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., on 13 June 1917, some two months following America's entry into World War I Taft's speech served as a rallying call for Americans to support the war effort and the reasons by which the U.S. determined to go to war. He concluded by noting that significant sacrifices would likely be required before the war was won, citing recent British losses as an example; but that in bringing America into the war Germany had committed its greatest blunder. William Howard Taft on America's Entry into the War; an Address at Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., 13 June 1917 Was there any other alternative for us than to declare war? I would like to begin with the fundamentals. That depends upon what in fact and in law the act of Germany was. What was the law? It is what is called international law; that is, a rule of conduct adopted by the acquiescence of all nations, of one nation toward another, both in peace and in war.

And to show that this is no empty boasting for the present occasion, but real tangible fact, you have only to consider the power which our city possesses and which has been won by those very qualities which I have mentioned. The length of the "New Republic" is suggested by the previous ones: 72 years, or 18 presidential elections. It remains to be seen whether 2005, the prospective beginning of the "

By James Chace He had become President without winning a majority of the popular vote, a big-state governor who ran as a reformer with results. A devout Christian, he was a moral absolutist with little patience for shades of gray or for dissent. And before coming to Washington, he had little knowledge of or interest in the world beyond America's shores. "It would be an irony of fate if my Administration had to deal chiefly with foreign matters, for all my preparation has been in domestic matters," he remarked shortly before taking the oath of office.

    Baseball as Patriotism and Pride
The Connection Between Our National Pastime and the Presidency President Woodrow Wilson tosses out the first pitch on Opening Day, 1916, in Washington D.C. William Howard Taft was never scouted by the major leagues. But President Taft's toss to Walter Johnson in 1910 made baseball history nonetheless, launching a new presidential tradition: the Opening Day first pitch. The president's annual appearance at the start of each season symbolically renews the bonds that unite the country, its leaders, and the game - a ceremonial springtime rebirth as America's National Pastime. For presidents, baseball offers a welcome connection to a wholesome, all-American image. Baseball and the American presidency have had a long history together. Since baseball's inception in the mid-19th century, Presidents have been involved with the National Pastime in many ways, by participating, watching or supporting. As far back as 1860, associations between Presidents and baseball appeared in print and illustration. Since 1910, Presidents have ceremoniously rung in the new baseball year by throwing out the first pitch on Opening Day, providing official sanction to the beginning of the season. In addition, for more than a century, U.S. Presidents have also taken time from their busy scheduled to attend other games, from amateur sandlot contests near the White House to All-Star and World Series games. Baseball and the Presidents in 19th Century America George Washington and John Adams played ball and bat games as kids, probably rounders and other games derived from it. Washington and his men even played ball-type games during the Revolutionary War.
