William Howard Taft
William Howard Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of a prominent attorney who had served in the Grant cabinet and later as American minister to Russia and Austria-Hungary. Taft graduated from Yale University in 1878 and earned a law degree from the Cincinnati Law School two years later. Due largely to his father's influence, he was appointed an assistant prosecuting attorney for Hamilton County. He worked briefly for the Internal Revenue Service before opening a law practice in 1883. Taft married Helen Herron in 1886. She was a very important influence on his life, providing the drive and ambition he lacked. She had promised herself early in life that she would some day be First Lady. In 1887, Taft was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Ohio superior court and was elected to that position the following year. In 1890, the Tafts moved to Washington, where he became solicitor general in the Benjamin Harrison administration. During these years, Taft became a friend and lunch partner of Theodore Roosevelt , who was then a civil service commissioner. Taft was next appointed to the U.S. Circuit Court in 1892 and served until becoming a law professor and dean in Cincinnati.

Robert A. Taft
Robert Alphonso Taft was born on September 8, 1889, in Cincinnati, into one of Ohio's most famous political families. His grandfather, Alphonso, had been President Ulysses S. Grant 's secretary of war. His father was William Howard Taft , later to become the 19th president of the United States. Robert Taft was a junior at Yale University when his father achieved the White House in 1909. Not having to struggle financially, Taft attended the best of schools. He attended school in Cincinnati and Taft school (operated by the family) in Watertown, Connecticut. He lived comfortably and traveled extensively, including furthering his education in the Philippine Islands. He associated with aristocratic families and married an heiress, Martha Bowers. Despite his elite status, Taft was a serious student and assumed that he would make his own way in the world. He graduated from Yale University in 1910, and from Harvard University Law School in 1913. Taft was admitted to the Ohio Bar association in the same year. In addition to his law practice, Taft became the assistant counsel with the United States Food Administration in 1917 and 1918. It was there that he became friends with

Taft, William Howard
, twenty-seventh president of the United States and tenth chief justice of the United States . Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Taft graduated from Yale University. A Republican, he served as the first governor-general of the Philippines and as secretary of war under Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt chose Taft as the candidate to succeed him, and he defeated the Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan in the election of 1908 . During Taft's administration, the Sixteenth Amendment was passed, allowing Congress to levy a federal income tax. Although Taft was not considered a trust-buster, he instituted twice as many antitrust proceedings as his predecessor. Taft also instituted dollar diplomacy , an unproductive program that promoted the use of trade and commerce to increase the nation's diplomatic influence, especially in the Caribbean and Asia. Although Taft survived a challenge for the Republican nomination in 1912, Roosevelt's formation of the Progressive party split the party, and Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson won the election. President Warren G. Harding named Taft chief justice on the Supreme Court in 1921, the job he had always wanted. He was the only man to serve as both president and chief justice.

C. C. Klinkhamer (1943) and G. Hagemann (1962). American History White, Edward D. (1845-1921), chief justice, U.S. Supreme Court. Following service in the Confederate army, White read law in New Orleans and took some courses in what would later be the Tulane Law School. He passed the Louisiana bar in 1868, became active in state Democratic politics, and was elected to the state senate in 1874. When the Democrats swept back into power at the end of Reconstruction, Governor Francis T. Nicholls named White to the Louisiana Supreme Court. A few years later, however, another faction of the party gained control and rewrote the constitution to make the thirty-four-year-old White ineligible because of his age. The Nicholls faction regained power in 1890, and the governor appointed White to the U.S. Senate, where he defended states' rights as well as business interests against any encroachment by the federal government. When Justice Samuel Blatchford of the U.S. Supreme Court died in 1893, tradition dictated that another New Yorker be named to his seat. But the two New York senators so despised President Grover Cleveland that they blocked his first two nominees. Although Cleveland had been opposed by White on the tariff issue, the president agreed with White's conservative views and named him to the Court, daring the Senate to reject one of its own. Although confirmed quickly, White refused to take his seat on the Court until he had secured high protective rates for sugar in the 1894 tariff.

President William Howard Taft
American History Study Guide William Howard Taft William Howard Taft had a long and distinguished career of public service. Four different presidents appointed him to judicial, diplomatic, or Cabinet (presidential advisory) positions. He achieved his main ambition when he was named chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1921. Taft was less successful in his role as president. "I am entirely content to serve in the ranks," he wrote to a supporter who wanted Taft to run again for president in 1916. He had been soundly beaten in his bid for reelection in 1912. The United States was undergoing tremendous economic growth during the first decade of the twentieth century when Taft was president. An increasingly profitable group of manufacturing, financial, and transportation corporations dominated American business. In response to such collection of wealth, a strong political trend called progressivism arose to promote legislation that would monitor business practices and improve social conditions for a growing urban population.
