Friday, 18 August, 2000, 16:35 GMT 17:35 UK Kim's Olympic 'sister act'
Kay Poe injured her knee during the US Olympic trials
When the Millennium Games kick off in Sydney in September, Esther Kim will be watching from the stands. As a vital member of the US women's Tae-Kwon-Do team, Kim should be competing. Instead, she will be cheering on the reigning world champion Kay Poe. It could have been so different. When the moment came for Kim to fight an injured Poe for a US Tae-Kwon-Do berth at the Games, Kim forfeited the match and gave away the chance both women had dreamed about.
We help each other - We push each other - I will be there, supporting her as always
Esther Kim "It was a hard decision to make, but I love Kay like my sister," Kim said. "I have cried about it. But in my heart I know it was the right thing to do." When International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Juan Antonio Samaranch heard of Kim's selfless act, he paid for her travel expenses to Sydney so she can see Poe try to win Olympic gold with the second-chance gift from her friend. "To compete at the Olympics together was a dream for both of us," said Kim." But Kay has always pushed a little harder, always wanted it a little more.

Our Purpose and Philosophy
Our program is designed to assist in the personal development of our students. We use a variety of activities to help us achieve our objectives, including an Olympic sport, an artistic discipline, self-defense training, and an abundance of exercises and games. Our philosophy is that all students can continuously improve themselves, both physically and mentally through Tae Kwon Do training, and enjoy the process. Tae Kwon Do Tae Kwon Do originated in Korea, over two thousand years ago. It has developed and improved over the centuries. Today, Tae Kwon Do is the world's most popular martial art. It is an official Olympic sport. People practice Tae Kwon Do in every country in the world. It is known throughout the world that Tae Kwon Do is very beneficial to children. The course at the International Tae Kwon Do Academy is a fun, safe system of personal development, which is highly recommended by many parents, physicians, and educators. It may be the best extra-curricular activity for children. An Artistic Discipline Tae Kwon Do is an artistic discipline. The techniques are done with graceful and powerful movements. Students continuously strive to improve the artistic presentation of each technique. The art of Tae Kwon Do develops posture, graceful movement, excellent coordination, and attention to detail. We believe that all children can benefit from exposure to an artistic discipline.
