History of Taekwondo
The earliest records of Martial Arts practice in Korea date back to about 50 B.C. These earliest forms of Korean martial arts are known as ' Taek Kyon '. Evidence that Martial Arts were being practiced at that time can be found in tombs where wall-paintings show two men in fighting-stance. Others reject this evidence and say that these men could be simply dancing. Back then, time there were three kingdoms:
  • Koguryo (37 B.C. - 668 A.D.) Paekje (18 B.C. - 600 A.D.) Silla (57 B.C. - 936 A.D.)
  • Silla unified the kingdoms after winning the war against Paekje in 668 A.D. and Koguryo in 670 A.D. The Hwa Rang Do played an important role at this unification. The Hwa Rang Do was an elite group of young noble men, devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the kingdom Silla. The best translation for HwaRang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa = "flower", Rang = "young man"). The HwaRang Do had an honor-code and practiced various forms of martial arts, including Taekyon and Soo Bakh Do. The old honor-code of the HwaRang is the philosophical background of modern Taekwondo.

    Taekwondo History
The origin of Taekwondo traces back to the three kingdoms of Koguryo (37 BC-668 AD), Paekche (18 BC-600 AD), and Silla (57 BC-936 AD). Archaeological findings (mural paintings on the royal tombs of the Koguryo dynasty, the stone sculptures of pagadas of temples of the Silla period, and documents written in the Paekche dynasty) showed fighting stances, skills, and formalized movements similar to today's Tae Kwon Do styles and forms.
The modern period of Taekwondo began with the liberation of Korea in 1945 after World War II. Korea wanted to eliminate Japanese influences (in martial arts) and began to unite the various martial arts schools (Kwans) and styles into a single style and national sport. In 1965, the name Tae Kwon Do was chosen to represent this unified style of Korean martial arts.

At first glance, one might think that Taekwondo, being a full-contact fighting sport, would be a lot like Kickboxing. This is exactly why most people find Taekwondo a disappointment to watch, because it's not like Kickboxing at all. While both Kickboxing, Taekwondo, and various other full-contact fighting sports, including amateur (olympic) Boxing, are all comprised of the same elements those being strategy, tactics, speed, force, attacks, counter-attacks, combinations, offence, defence, dodging, etc and so forth each sport emphasize these elements to varying degrees. Most full-contact fighting sports emphasize the violence and the force, resulting in knock-outs being quite common in those sports. This is exactly what makes Olympic Taekwondo a bit different; although it too is a full-contact sport, knock-outs are quite rare. This is the consequence of especially one important and defining rule: you may not hit your opponent's face or head with your fist You may, however, hit your opponent's head with your

The Exploration of the Effect of Taekwondo Training on Personality Traits
    By:
Dr. Richard C. Bell, United States Sports Academy
Chia-Ming Chang, Tajen Institute of Technology, Taiwan, Republic of China
    Abstract
In this paper, the authors analyze the effects of Taekwondo training on personality. The authors found that Taekwondo participants realize, that in addition to the physical training, Taekwondo emphasizes concentration, self-control and self-discipline. Other researchers suggest that Taekwondo training has many psychological benefits, such as enhanced self-esteem, self-concept, reduced aggressiveness, decreased anxiety, increase in personal independence, and ability to take a leadership role. Taekwondo training might be used as a therapeutic program.
    Introduction
    The Background of Taekwondo
Taekwondo has been under constant evolution for over several thousand years. However, it was not until the 1950s that Taekwondo was standardized and organized by Gen Choi Hong Hi and the sport was brought outside the Korean borders, at first to Vietnam and the US, and later to the rest of the world. Today, Taekwondo is organized in three international federations: the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), with headquarters in Seoul, Korea; the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), with headquarters in Austria; and the Global Taekwondo Federation (GTF) with headquarters in Korea. Taekwondo has recently been declared an official Olympic sport with the first competitions held during the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, in 2000 (Lucas, 1992).

    The History of Taekwondo
Taekwondo was originally the national martial art of Korea, it is now an international art and sport. Tae means "to strike with the feet."
Kwon means "destroying with the hand or the fist."
    Do means "way" or "method."
At this writing, Taekwondo has over 100 million students in more than 115 countries around the world. Taekwondo is believed to be one of the oldest Oriental arts of unarmed self-defense. It was widely practiced during Korea's Three Han era, 300 years before Christ. In 1935, a team of Japanese archaeologists unearthed a royal tomb of the Korean Koguryo dynasty and found a mural believed to have been painted between 3 A.D. and 427 A.D. The mural clearly depicts men practicing primitive forms of Taekwondo, then called Soo Bak "punching and butting." The art was refined and perfected during the Silla dynasty, which began in southeastern Korea in 57 B.C., and was incorporated into the discipline of Hwarang Do "the way of the flower of youth." In this way, Taekwondo became part of the ethical, mental, and physical philosophy of the young men who were trained to become the ruling backbone of Korea. Hwarang Do was much more than simply a martial discipline. It combined civic duty with personal morality and the building of a deep spiritual consciousness rooted in ancient philosophical principles.

IOC Confirms Taekwondo as Regular Olympic Event
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to confirm taekwondo as an official Olympic event in 2004, it was reported Wednesday.
The decision came in a letter from IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch to South Korea's IOC executive board member Kim Un-Yong, Kim's office said.
Samaranch's letter read: "I am pleased to announce that during the recent meeting of the Executive Board held from December 11 to 13 in Lausanne, it has been decided to confirm taekwondo as an Olympic sport. "The IOC sport director will soon be in contact with you in order to develop the qualification system for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games in this regard." Kim was not available for comment but South Korean newspapers quoted him as saying the IOC decision was an honor to Koreans. Taekwondo, the Korean-born sport of kicking and punching, made its Olympic debut this year in Sydney on a temporary basis.

Taekwondo Korean name Hangul Hanja Revised Romanization Tae-gwon-do McCune-Reischauer T'ae-gwŏn-do Taekwondo Tae Kwon Do , or Taekwon-Do is the Korean national sport and most commonly practiced form of mudo . It is also one of the world's most commonly practiced sports. Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Federation 's form of Taekwondo is currently an Olympic sport. In the Korean language Tae hanja 跆) means "to kick or destroy with the foot"; Kwon hanja 拳) means "punch or smash with the hand or fist"; and Do hanja 道) means "way" or "art." Hence, Taekwondo is loosely translated as "The art of kicking and punching," "The way of the foot and the hand," or "The art of destruction with the hands and feet." Taekwondo's popularity has resulted in the divergent evolution of the art, from tournament sparring rules to Taekwondo-inspired aerobic exercises to more practical self-defense classes that include some weapons training. As with other martial arts, Taekwondo struggles with the balance of the martial art's role as a combat technique, sport, exercise, entertainment, and philosophy. While the Olympic Games motivate rule changes to make for a safe but exciting spectator sport (WTF Taekwondo tournament rules do not allow punching to the head, and award more points for high kicks), WTF Taekwondo has also received criticism, including from other Taekwondo practitioners, for veering away from street-effective techniques and the practice of forms as an art. Kicks are emphasized in Taekwondo (both WTF Taekwondo and its major competitors, the
