History
A short overview of the history of Taekwondo, ethics and etiquettes.
History of Taekwondo
The earliest records of Martial Arts practice in Korea date back to about 50 B.C. These earliest forms of korean martial arts are known as ' Taek Kyon '. Evidence that Martial Arts were being practiced at that time can be found in tombs where wall-paintings show two men in fighting-stance. Others reject this evidence and say that these men could be simply dancing. Back then, time there were three kingdoms:
  • Koguryo (37 B.C. - 668 A.D.) Paekje (18 B.C. - 600 A.D.) Silla (57 B.C. - 935 A.D.)
  • Silla unified the kingdoms after winning the war against Paekje in 660 A.D. and Koguryo in 668 A.D. The Hwa Rang Do played an important role at this unification. The Hwa Rang Do was an elite group of young noble men, devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the kingdom Silla. The best translation for HwaRang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa ="flower", Rang="young man"). The HwaRang Do had an honor-code and practiced various forms of martial arts, including Taekyon and Soo Bakh Do. The old honor-code of the HwaRang is the philosophical background of modern Taekwondo. What followed was a time of peace and the HwaRang turned from a military organization to a group specialized in poetry and music. It was in 936 A.D. when Wang Kon founded the Koryo dynasty, an abbreviation of Koguryo. The name Korea is derived from Koryo.

American Esther Kim earned a spot on the 2000 Olympic team by winning the United States selection trials. However, she gave up the spot to her good friend Kay Poe, who was injured in the trials and could no longer compete. Her incredible gesture was greeted with unyielding applause and admiration and an all-expense-paid trip to Sydney from IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch.
Taekwondo was popularized in Korea and has become a part of its culture and heritage, but now over 50 million people worldwide participate in one form or another. Taken literally, taekwondo means "the way of hands and feet." It can trace its roots back to over 2000 years ago, as evidenced by various murals found on ancient Korean tombs, but it didn't get its name or its official rules until 1957. Each contest involves two competitors, "

The newly established WTF technical standards were adopted by the AAU Taekwondo group. On October 5, 1975, Taekwondo became an affiliate of the General Association of International Sports Federation (GAISF), an association of all international sports, both Olympic and non-Olympic, with direct ties to the International Olympic Committee (IOC. On April 9, 1976, the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) adopted Taekwondo as an official sport event. In 1979, the WTF President, Kim Un Yong, was elected chairperson of the World Federation of Non-Olympic Sports. Under the auspices of GAISF, Taekwondo was introduced to the IOC as a sport. Rumors Circulate of Taekwondo Olympic Exclusion
The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday it was considering the inclusion of golf, rugby, squash, karate, and inline sports as new Olympic events from 2012. The IOC sent out questionnaires to the 28 Olympic sports federations. It also sent questionnaires to the federations of the five sports under consideration. The questionnaire is known to consist of 33 criteria. The status of the candidates will be decided at the 117th IOC Session, to be held next July in Singapore. With talk of the Japanese traditional martial art of karate being included as an Olympic sport, the international sports world forecasts that the chances of taekwondo being hit with a stray bullet have increased. Currently, the only martial arts included as Olympic sports are judo and taekwondo. Judo, which has been an Olympic sport since the 1964 Tokyo games, stands absolutely no chance of being dropped as an Olympic sport. On the other hand, taekwondo, which was introduced as an Olympic sport for the 2000 Sydney games, has suffered from endless judgment disputes and numerous rumors of being dropped. In fact, China, which hosts the games in 2008, has been lobbying hard to get the Chinese martial art of wushu recognized as an Olympic sport instead of taekwondo. Golf, about which there have been persistent rumors of an Olympic rebirth, is the strongest candidate. Initially, it was the IOC's intention to adopt golf as an Olympic event from 2008, but with top-ranked pros from the PGA tour showing reluctance to participate, the dream experienced a setback. Nations like the U.S. and South Africa that have expressed a desire to hold the 2012 summer games, however, are strongly pushing for golf's inclusion, so the chances have grown greater that golf would rejoin the Olympic family after a 100-year absence since the 1904 St. Loius games. In eight years, we may get a chance to watch our female golf warriors who are dominating the LPGA tour make their way across the Olympic field with Korean flags pinned to their chests.

Taekwondo is a modern martial art with Korean origin. It was developed as a self-defence system characterized by extremely high kicks. All Taekwondo techniques and movements are worked out according to the bio-mechanical principles of human limbs - to be used most effectively. "Tae" in Korean means "a kick, a jump", "Kwon" - "a fist, a punch", and "Do" - "an art, a way". So, Taekwondo is "The art of the kick and the punch", but Taekwondo means also "the way" to physical and moral self-perfection. In the process of practising Taekwondo man finds out that it is a way of living as well. That refers to more of the martial arts, too. In Taekwondo except the kicks (which are really the prime part of the system) are studied also punches, hand blocks, catches, throwings. In its program are included, of course, basic technique knowledge, sparring, forms (patterns), self-defence and others.

Choue Chung-won, president of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), has expressed guarded optimism over whether the Korean martial art will retain its status as an Olympic sport for the 2012 Olympic Games and beyond. ``We are doing our best and will patiently wait for the outcome with a humble mind,'' Choue said in a recent exclusive interview with The Korea Times. The 117 th Session of the International Olympic Committee will conduct a sport-by-sport secret vote on July 8 to determine the fate of taekwondo and 27 other Olympic sports for the 2012 Olympic program. A sport will automatically be eliminated from the Olympic program if it fails to earn more than 50 percent of total votes. The IOC Session will be held in Singapore. Karate and four other sports under consideration by the IOC for inclusion in the 2012 Olympic program are actively striving to become official Olympic sports by seeking the support of many of the 116 IOC members. Karate is currently divided into two international bodies, the World Karate Federation led by a Spaniard and the International Traditional Karate Federation headed by a Japanese national. Baseball, softball and the modern pentathlon have been officially cited as Olympic sports most likely to be excluded while golf, rugby and karate have been fiercely endeavoring to be listed on the 2012 Olympic program.

Omsk Interview The seeds for this interview were planted during Grandmaster Kim's 1994 visit to Russia and his participation in the All-Russia Karate Tournament in Omsk. Grandmaster's visit led to the publication in May of 2000 of the first Martial Arts book in Russian , the arts having been outlawed during communism. His book, combied with the reawakening interest in Martial Arts, led to this interview which became an article published in both the Evening Omsk (Siberia) and Sports Weekly newspapers. Foreword by Grandmaster Kim Soo A llow me to introduce myself. My name is Grandmaster Kim Soo, and I developed the International Chayon-Ryu Martial Art Association. Chayon-Ryu is the Korean term that means "The Natural Way." All things in the universe follow the natural path. If one follows this logical and reasonable path a correct result will be reached. However, if one commits a wrongful act, the result may eventually prove harmful. The same "natural way" philosophy also applies to the physical aspect of Chayon-Ryu. The student who lets his/her body flow naturally through a technique is far less likely to incur an injury. Furthermore, power generated from natural movements is far greater than from contrived moves. Humans designed martial art, therefore, we must move as humans, not as animals. Many people talk about tigers, cranes, snakes, dragons and any number of fanciful creatures to make their system seem mysterious and secretive. This trickery is used to draw people in, but this teaching is false since humans cannot move like any of these creatures. People with no martial art foundation find this fantasy more exciting than plain and simple truth.
