China Seeks Adjustment in Olympic Sports Structure
Having collected an unprecedented overhaul of 28 golds in Sydney Olympics, China aims for breakthrough outside those sports they keep perennial dominance over.
In Monday's meeting involving sporting chiefs across the country, decision-makers, targeting the 2004 Athens Games, decided to make some reasonable and minor changes to the Olympics sports structure while continuing to strengthen the dominance in favorite events.
As many as 26 golds in Sydney Olympics are from such sports as table tennis, badminton, diving, gymnastics, shooting, weightlifting and judo, all of which are traditional sources of medals for China in past major events. But in swimming, athletics and aquatic events, where a total of 119 golds are on offer, China becomes a minnow as they snatched only one gold in women's walking race and ended up without any medals in swimming pools. China also failed to earn Olympic berth in men's soccer, men's volleyball and women's basketball and had a poor Olympic showing in women's volleyball and men's basketball. China's women soccer, which finished runners-up in the 1996 Olympics and 1999 World Cup, did not even go beyond the group stage in Sydney.

Stephen Lopez had to overcome two opponents and a sit-in protest on the way to his second gold medal Saturday at the Sports Pavilion in Athens. Lopez preyed upon an injured Bahri Tanrikulu of Turkey for a 3-0 win in the gold medal match, but it was his semifinal contest with Rashad Ahmadov of Azerbaijan that produced the real fireworks. Stephen Lopez celebrates his second consecutive Olympic gold in taekwondo on Saturday.(AP/Al Behrman) Protesting a ruling against their charge, the Azerbaijan coaching staff stormed onto the mats and yelled at officials until being escorted off. Ahmadov sat down in protest and remained there for several minutes. Lopez went on to win 9-8, and then took advantage of Tanrikulu's injured arm in the finals.

      STAFF REPORTER
Tuesday, Jul 05, 2005,Page 2 Advertising President Chen Shui-bian ( ) yesterday said he will ask Taiwan's representative in the International Olympic Committee to provide assistance to the World Taekwondo Federation in its appeal to allow the sport to remain a part of the Olympic Games in 2012. "We will ask our International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Wu Ching-kuo (§d¸g°ê) to assist [the federation's] request," Chen said while receiving the federation's president Choue Chung-won at the Presidential Office yesterday. "We will also seek more international forums for our taekwondo athletes to display their talents." The number of sports to be a part of the 2012 Olympic Games is currently limited to 28. The martial art of taekwondo, along with baseball, softball and the modern pentathlon, is rumored to be on the list of sports that may be chopped from the official Olympic program.

Unification Update
The previous meeting held on June 18 had ended with an impasse on a number of issues. The meeting of the 6th August was an attempt to negotiate a workable solution that would recognise the valid concerns and wishes of
the greater majority of practitioners that were being expressed by their representative organisations. Inflexibility and an unwillingness to negotiate or recognise certain valid issues by certain members at this meeting resulted in a motion being put forward to dissolve the committee and to pass the issue of unification back to the NZOC.

Singapore - Apart from deciding which city will host the 2012 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will also discuss at its Session in Singapore whether any of its 28 sporting disciplines should be axed for the event in seven years time. Taekwondo, modern pentathlon, baseball and softball are the sports most likely to be slashed with golf, karate, squash, seven-a-side rugby and roller sports shortlisted on an official waiting list as their possible replacements. The elimination of a sport needs a yes vote from at least half of the 115 IOC member countries when they discuss the matter on the last day of the Session Friday. But there is a strong lobby to replace these sports, which lack popularity and have little global appeal, with big crowd-pullers. IOC President, Jacques Rogge, is known to be in favour of a major overhaul with the IOC looking to ensure the Olympic programme "reflects the constant evolution of public expectations" to make the event more attractive to an ever changing global audience, with any changes coming at the 2012 Games. The IOC believes the programme must be "exciting, attractive, action-packed and athlete-focused. It must also reflect the constant evolution of public expectations."
