Making Olympic History: 2000 Sydney Games New York Times At the first modern Olympics in 1896, Melpomene became the first female to compete, although unofficially, in the games. Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

TAEKWONDO REPORT Wednesday, September 27 A true champion who beat nobody to get there Oliver Holt From Oliver Holt in Sydney Esther Kim stood in a busy corridor at the State Sports Centre and said she was worried it was all her fault. She was wondering if the pressure had all got too much for her best friend and it was making her feel guilty. Perhaps the responsibility of trying to win for both of them, she thought, had terrified Kay Poe so much that she lost a taekwondo contest for only the second time in two years just when it mattered most. Poe’s first-round defeat yesterday cost her any chance of the gold medal that she was widely expected to win and brought forth a flood of angry tears that she could not choke back no matter how hard she tried. That Esther Kim had caused Poe’s participation in these Games to be celebrated as the purest manifestation of the Olympic spirit was not in doubt. Nobody, though, least of all Poe, wanted to blame Kim. They just wanted to thank her. Even Juan Antonio Samaranch, the president of the International Olympic Committee, wanted to thank her. He invited Kim here as a special guest of the IOC so that she could watch Poe’s preparations and feel as much a part of the Games as it was possible to do. Kim, after all, would have been competing in the inaugural Olympic taekwando competition yesterday had it not been for an act of self-sacrifice that ought to make her every bit as much a heroine of this fortnight as Cathy Freeman and Marion Jones. Four months ago, Kim stood on the brink of seizing the last place in the US taekwondo team heading for Sydney. Against all expectations, she had secured a berth in the final of the Olympic trials and was anticipating fighting against Poe, her best friend for the last 11 years, for the right to go to Sydney. In the dying seconds of her last contest before the final, though, Poe dislocated her left patella. Even though she struggled through agonising pain to hang on to her victory, she had to be carried from the mat, unable to walk.

    Saturday, September 30
CONTROVERSY ON THE MAT Olympic taekwondo judges fought further accusations of biased refereeing Saturday, as France filed an official complaint after their heavyweight Pascal Gentil lost to South Korea’s Kim Kyong-Hun. Kim, the 1997 world champion, beat Gentil 6-2 in the semi-finals. However a complaint by French coach Philippe Boudeo was rejected by the taekwondo board of arbitration after studying a video of the match. "The scores are assigned exactly as shown on the score board," an official statement said. It was the first official appeal after daily protests about the refereeing in taekwondo since the Korean-born sport of kicking and punching made its Olympic debut four days ago. "They wanted the Korean to win," a tearful Gentil, 27, fumed. "It was my fault. I should have knocked him out," he said. "I touched him but they didn’t count. But, when he didn’t touch me, they did count. I am sure that even if I put him down, the referee would have counted 30 times to help him recover." The 25-year-old Kim dazzled with a consistently effective instep and headkicks led 7-1 at the end of the second round but one point was deducted in the final round for passivity as he eased up.

Judo has a complex scoring system Judo made its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 1964, when Japan took advantage of its right as host to introduce a new sport of its choice.
The martial art had its origins in jujitsu, and it came as no surprise when Japanese judoka won gold in three of the four weight classes. The hosts did not have it all their own way, however, as Dutchman Anton Geesink beat Japan's national champion Kaminaga Akio to win the open class. There was a brief exile when judo was dropped for the Mexico City Games, but it was back for Munich in 1972. Women did not compete for Olympic judo medals until 1992 but now enjoy equal status, contesting seven weight classes. The open class, in which men of any weight could take part, was discontinued in 1984.
