History The origins of Taekwondo, which go back two thousand years, lie in Korea. During its history, this sport has been known by various names, like Taekyon or Subak. Its official name nowadays, Taekwondo, was announced in 1955; a year later, the first championships were held.  The Korean Taekwondo Federation was founded in 1965, and the World Taekwondo Federation was founded in 1973. During the same year the first World Championship took place. 1980 was an important year for the sport, since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) acknowledged Taekwondo as an Olympic sport.  It was included as a display event in two successive Olympic Games: in Seoul (1988) and Barcelona (1992). Taekwondo was included on the Olympic Games competition schedule for the first time at the Sydney Games in 2000. Taekwondo first appeared in Greece in 1968, with Stamatis Kassis as its first Instructor.  From 1979 to 1987 it remained under the auspices of SEGAS, the Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics.  In 1987, the Greek Taekwondo Federation (ELOT) was established, and today, in collaboration with three regional and twelve local affiliate bodies, ELOT is responsible for the advancement of the sport. ELOT has some four hundred registered Taekwondo clubs and over 35,000 members. Every year ELOT stages preliminary, inter-club, regional and national championships, as well as a large number of single-day events for all ages and both gender groups. It has also successfully staged three Balkan, four European and two World Championships.

History of Taekwondo The earliest records of Martial Arts practice in Korea date back to about 50 B.C. These earliest forms of korean martial arts are known as ' Taek Kyon '. Evidence that Martial Arts were being practiced at that time can be found in tombs where wall-paintings show two men in fighting-stance. Others reject this evidence and say that these men could be simply dancing. Back then, time there were three kingdoms: Koguryo (37 B.C. - 668 A.D.) Paekje (18 B.C. - 600 A.D.) Silla (57 B.C. - 935 A.D.) Silla unified the kingdoms after winning the war against Paekje in 660 A.D. and Koguryo in 668 A.D. The Hwa Rang Do played an important role at this unification. The Hwa Rang Do was an elite group of young noble men, devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the kingdom Silla. The best translation for HwaRang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa ="flower", Rang="young man"). Taekwondo History The origin of Taekwondo traces back to the three kingdoms of Koguryo (37 BC-668 AD), Paekche (18 BC-600 AD), and Silla (57 BC-936 AD). Archaeological findings (mural paintings on the royal tombs of the Koguryo dynasty, the stone sculptures of pagadas of temples of the Silla period, and documents written in the Paekche dynasty) showed fighting stances, skills, and formalized movements similar to today's Tae Kwon Do styles and forms. The modern period of Taekwondo began with the liberation of Korea in 1945 after World War II. Korea wanted to eliminate Japanese influences (in martial arts) and began to unite the various martial arts schools (Kwans) and styles into a single style and national sport. In 1965, the name Tae Kwon Do was chosen to represent this unified style of Korean martial arts. A brief history of Tae Kwon Do The modern period of Taekwondo began with the defeat of the Japanese and the liberation of Korea in 1945. Korean martial arts masters wanted to eliminate Japanese influences. They began discussions on how to return to the traditional Taekyon based Korean martial arts and on how to unite the various martial arts schools (or Kwans) and styles into a single style and national sport. After several years of discussions, the name "Taekwondo" was chosen in April 1955 by the board of masters of the various Kwans, and the kwans started to unify through the late 1950s. The spread of Taekwondo as a martial art and competitive sport continues to this date. I read the definition from many books and the one that I like best comes from the book Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts written by Donn F. Draeger and Robert W. Smith. "Taekwondo is an empty-hand combat form that entails the use of the whole body. Tae means "to Kick" or "Smash with the feet," Kwon implies "punching" or "destroying with the hand or fist," and Do means "way" or "method." Taekwondo thus, is the technique of unarmed combat for self defense that involves the skillful application of techniques that include punching, jumping kicks, blocks, dodges, parrying actions with hands and feet. It is more than a mere physical fighting skill, representing as it does a way of thinking and a pattern of life requiring strict discipline. It is a system of training both the mind and the body in which great emphasis is placed on the development of the trainee's moral character." Taekwondo is a martial art that in "todays" form of self defense has evolved by combining many different styles of martial arts that existed in Korea over the last 2,000 years and some martial arts styles from countries that surround Korea. Taekwondo incorporates the abrupt linear movements of Karate and the flowing, circular patterns of Kung-fu with native kicking techniques. Over fifty typically Chinese circular hand movements can be identified in modern Taekwondo.

The History of Taekwondo Taekwondo was originally the national martial art of Korea, it is now an international art and sport. Tae means "to strike with the feet." Kwon means "destroying with the hand or the fist." Do means "way" or "method." At this writing, Taekwondo has over 100 million students in more than 115 countries around the world. Taekwondo is believed to be one of the oldest Oriental arts of unarmed self-defense. It was widely practiced during Korea's Three Han era, 300 years before Christ. In 1935, a team of Japanese archaeologists unearthed a royal tomb of the Korean Koguryo dynasty and found a mural believed to have been painted between 3 A.D. and 427 A.D. The mural clearly depicts men practicing primitive forms of Taekwondo, then called Soo Bak "punching and butting." The art was refined and perfected during the Silla dynasty, which began in southeastern Korea in 57 B.C., and was incorporated into the discipline of Hwarang Do "the way of the flower of youth." In this way, Taekwondo became part of the ethical, mental, and physical philosophy of the young men who were trained to become the ruling backbone of Korea. Hwarang Do was much more than simply a martial discipline. It combined civic duty with personal morality and the building of a deep spiritual consciousness rooted in ancient philosophical principles.
