Tae-Bo, a unique and challenging fitness system, is a martial arts/aerobics hybrid created by Billy Blanks in 1975. Tae-Bo combines Tae Kwon Do, boxing and dance disciplines and puts them together in a challenging program set to hip-hop music. A typical one-hour class consists of a series of jabs, punches, kicks and steps, choreographed in a series of eight-count combinations. The name, Tae-Bo, is a combination of other words. "Tae" means "leg" and it relates to the kicks and lower body part of the workout. "Bo" comes from boxing and the upper body punches that are an integral part of the workout. Set to the upbeat music, Tae-Bo can be a very satisfying workout because it engages the entire body.

Question of the Week Question: I am 16 years old and am in a private boarding school. Because we have a structured schedule that leaves me no time to exercise, I am gaining weight. Also, I am on the school meal program and don't seem to be able to eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. Can you help me find ways to stay fit and healthy in my present situation? Answer: The first thing we suggest is that you speak to someone in charge at your school about the need to add fruits and vegetables and healthy snacks to the food program. Most school meals do offer healthy choices although they may be hard to pick out if surrounded by tempting fatty foods. Look for fruits and vegetables without sauces and whole grain cereals and breads. Arrange to special order these foods for you if that is feasible. If you don't feel comfortable speaking to a person in authority, perhaps you could speak to a counselor, friendly teacher or clergyman. Tell them your problem and ask if they could help. Teens especially need healthy choices available to them, as fast and fatty foods are so tempting.

Updated April 2005 New exercise DVDs and videos are being released every week. This volume and diversity can leave consumers overwhelmed and confused. One retailer/reviewer, Collage Video, reports that its staff members viewed thousands of exercise videos, and actually worked out to each of them before settling on the 743 titles sold in their online store. Exercise physiologists and trainers know much more about workout effectiveness and safety today than they did when the fitness-video craze kicked off in the '80s, and reviews now stress the importance of updating your vintage video collection. Older tapes that should be shelved include those in which the instructor gives no alignment guidance, offers no easier alternatives for tough moves, repeats the same exercises over and over, or presents spine-stressing or knee-straining moves. Most of the Web sites and articles we found don't review or even identify videos they wouldn't recommend. But we did run across three that earn Paula Z.'s lowest ratings and aren't included in the Collage Video catalog of the best 743 videos on the market. Paula Z. suggests avoiding "Cindy Crawford's Shape Your Body Workout", for its too fast moves and poor body alignment. "Tony Little Target Training: Total Body Shape-Up and Maintenance," takes some knocks for its controversial muscle-fatigue weight-training approach. "Denise Austin's 30 Minute Target Toner," is criticized by experts for out-of-date, ineffective toning techniques.

the revolutionary fitness system that combines boxing, Tae Kwon Do and aerobics exercises your body from the inside out, combining motivational speeches with a hard-hitting workout. Billy Blanks, its charismatic founder, says in his videos, "I tell people in my class, 'When you're working out, who are you looking at in the mirror? Are you looking just at the outside? Or, are you looking at the inside? If you're just looking at the outside then your five senses can deceive you and you'll never change.'" What Is Tae-Bo?
"Tae" refers to the leg and foot, for the kicks and lower body workout, and "Bo" refers to the boxing moves and upper body punches that are an integral part of the explosive, high-energy workout. It's a repetitive action of punches and kicks that relates as well to self-defense as it does to confidence and fitness. Ross Marchesanzo, an instructor at Family Fitness in Kitchener, Ontario, believes that Tae-Bo is the best way to maintain fitness. He teaches boxercise, which is similar to Tae-Bo. "Most people don't realize how much energy and technique is involved in throwing a punch," he says, adding that tightening up the abs (all four levels), bending and twisting makes the punch powerful and the workout hard. Marchesanzo has 15 years of martial arts experience. He says technique is the most important part of the workout. "I've had people feel faint or dizzy, but never an injury in my class. I know people who have broken bones during a workout and I blame the instructor." The repetitive workout focuses on skill and balance. "Think about your stance, concentrate on how you want to move."

  • Brisk walking is the most popular aerobic exercise among women and is appropriate for women of all ages. Walking at a swift pace burns almost as many calories as running or jogging for the same distance, and poses less risk for injury. If you are a beginning walker, choose a level surface. Gradually increase your pace until you can do one mile in about 15 minutes. To intensify the exercise, add hills and varied terrain to your course. You can also use hand weights of one to three pounds, but avoid ankle weights as they can cause injury. Jogging burns more calories in less time and is as simple and convenient as walking, but it is too strenuous for some and may cause joint injuries. If you are a beginner, alternate walking and jogging for the first three or four weeks. Then gradually increase the jogging portion until you can comfortably run for the entire workout. Remember not to exceed your target heart rate; the talk test may be the best way to easily monitor your exertion level. Aerobics classes or home videos offer variety, music and choreography, and some women prefer the extra motivation an instructor provides. Start with beginner classes or videos, and watch the instructor carefully for proper foot placement and body alignment to avoid injury, especially to your knees.
