Biathlon
Biathlon, © IPC Biathlon is a sport combining Cross-Country Skiing and Shooting. Over the past few years, the Olympic and Paralympic biathlon has become one of the most popular winter sports. Especially in Europe, millions of viewers watched the biathlon events on TV as they followed the Olympic and Paralympic stars during their competitions.
For both men and women, competitions are held in three different classes: LW classes (competitors with locomotive disabilities), sitting LW classes and B classes (competitors with a visual impairment). The rifles of the visual impaired athletes are equipped with electro-acoustic glasses, which send different tones to the athletes headphones depending on the accuracy of their shot.
The biathlon demonstration to be held during the Paralympic Day is limited to the shooting discipline. Under the instruction of Paralympic athletes all visitors can have a go shooting a rifle for blind and visual impaired athletes and find out about the difficulties of this exciting sport.
More detailed information about the sport can be in the Nordic Skiing section of the IPC website.

Table tennis club offers up motivation
Olympic hopefuls training with Palo Alto team open new NorCal league tonight with long-range plans for 2008 by Patricia Bass Jackie Lee spends five hours a day taking out her frustrations on a little, white ball. Back and forth it goes, over the net and back. Every workout is another day closer to redemption, another step closer to becoming an Olympian in table tennis. Lee, a 19-year-old Cal student and member of the Palo Alto Table Tennis Club, narrowly missed making the 2004 table tennis Olympic team in what she calls a "political fluke." There were two qualifying events - singles and doubles. She took fourth in singles, making her a member of the national team and a good prospect for the Olympics. When it came to choosing doubles partners, however, her teammates who had placed first through third in singles chose their partners before Lee. Thus, Jackie, was stuck with a less-skilled partner and wound up losing her Olympic qualification match. "It was very frustrating and disappointing to know that someone who had qualified below me in singles was joining the Olympic team just because a higher-ranked player had chosen them for a doubles partner," Lee said. "But it's like any sport, there's a lot of politics involved."

Table Tennis
At a basic level table tennis is easy to set up, space efficient (4 tables can fit into a badminton hall), versatile (can be played almost anywhere, and on modified tables if necessary), non-weather dependent (except when played outdoors!), and equipment (tables, nets, bats and balls) is relatively inexpensive. Normal sporting/PE kit (preferably dark coloured) and light soled sports shoes or trainers are appropriate. However, at a higher level there are specific requirements regarding size of hall, lighting, flooring etc. according to the level of competition, and better players demand higher quality equipment and clothing. Above Photo - Jan-Ove Waldner by Dutch photographer Henk Hommes Table tennis can be played in singles and doubles, and although games have traditionally been up to 21 points, games up to 11 are now table tennis law and replacing up to 21. Normally local league teams have 3 or 4 members, but 2-a-side leagues are becoming more popular. Polybat has been adapted from table tennis for severely physically disabled.

  • Home U.S. People Word Wise ... Homework Center Fact Monster Favorites Reference Desk Table Tennis First Olympic Appearance: 1988 by Mike Morrison With over 40 million competitive players and millions more playing recreationally, table tennis is the world's largest "participation" sport. Olympic table tennis is just like the game you're used to playing on the dusty table in your basement, except it's probably just a tad faster. Anyone who's seen Forrest Gump can attest to how fast the game can be. Balls in elite competitions can travel at speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour (almost 100 mph).
    Did You Know?
Rules of table tennis clearly state that socks must be worn at all times.
Also known as ping-pong because of the noise heard when the ball hits the paddle and then the table, table tennis was originally played with balls made of either cork or rubber and with rackets made of cardboard. Today, the balls are celluloid and the rackets are generally wood with only the finest rubbers and glues. In 2000, the International Table Tennis Federation adopted the 11-point game rules for international play. A match is determined by the best of five, seven, or nine games. A game is won by the first side to reach 11 points, but you have to win by at least two. In order to avoid long, drawn-out games, if a game isn't won in 10 minutes, then it's time to implement the "expedite system." This means that if the receiving player or pair makes 13 good returns, the receiver shall score a point.
