Archaeologists believe the ancient Olympic Games began more than 4,000 years ago in Olympia, a valley in Greece. Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude … well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.

It took until 1928 for women to compete in track and field events at the Olympics. And at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, the Canadian women's track and field team was the equal of any other, winning two gold, one silver and one bronze.

New book on women in the Olympics

ONE hundred years ago this week, women's sport reached one of its most significant landmarks: acceptance into the Olympic Games. The co-authors of a new book featuring interviews with 32 of the oldest women Olympians from around the world struggled to find a publisher. The Australian table tennis team isn't going to Athens to collect Olympic medals. "We're more focused on the Commonwealth Games," admitted Table Tennis Australia boss Martin Shaw. "But the Olympics will provide a little bit more experience for the younger players and give the older ones a few more matches under their belts to keep them in nick at that level." Dual Olympian Russell Lavale will lead a six-strong team to Athens, lining up in the men's singles and partnering fellow Victorian Trevor Brown in the doubles. Brown and Sweden-based South Australian William Henzell will also contest the singles, with Henzell also teaming with Victorian David Zalcberg in doubles. Chinese-born Sydney Olympians Miao Miao and Jian Fang Lay, both also from Victoria, will be Australia's representatives in the women's singles and doubles. In a sport dominated by the Chinese, Shaw said Miao - who reached the women's doubles quarter-finals with Shirley Zhou at Sydney 2000 - and Fang Lay shaped as Australia's best hope of claiming an unlikely medal.
