Seventeen days, 10,750 athletes and 197 nations produced a flurry of fascinating facts and figures by Steve Rushin
Swiss modern pentathlete Phillipp Waeffler came up a bit short on horsepower. photograph by
Bob Martin The figures cited above were provided by IBM's cockamamie Olympic database. And while it is true that nothing lends itself to unalloyed, computer-nerd number crunching quite like the Games, we can only begin to digest the raw data now and to quantify all those who qualified. The most we can do is sweep the sands with a medal detector and suss out the superlatives, the sublime, the silly: the bests, the worsts, the lasts, the firsts. The centennial of the modern Olympic Games was not simply an occasion to recall firsts but to create them. Leave it to Greece to gloriously combine the two in Atlanta and win its most medals (eight) since Athens first hosted the world in 1896.
First For the first time in Olympic history, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Syria won gold medals. Hong Kong won its first and last gold medal; it will become part of China in 1997. Second The second-place finish in the men's 100-meter sprint, by Frankie Fredericks of Namibia, was good enough to have won gold in every previous Olympics.

History
The first clubs were founded during the twenties and the sport rapidly gained popularity around the world. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was founded in 1926 during the 1st World Championship. Winners of that Championship where two Hungarians: Roland Jacobi at both men’s singles and doubles, and Maria Mednvansky at women’s singles and doubles games. Japanese players dominated the sport in the 1950s. They introduced a new way of holding the racket, which was later adapted by the Chinese, who became the absolute masters of the sport until the mid-1980s. From the end of the 1980s and until the beginning of the 1990s, the Swedish team held centre stage, beating China in three consecutive World Championships (1989, 1991, 1993). Nevertheless, China made a comeback in the last two World Championships (1999, 2001), regaining the first place in the World Ranking. In recent years, Table Tennis has made great progress. The regulations have evolved in an effort to make the sport more attractive and more popular to the public. When the sport was added into the 1988 Olympic Games Programme, in Seoul, Table Tennis started to acquire a mass character. It is currently considered one of the most popular sports in the world in terms of participation numbers, with more than 187 National Federations being members of ITTF. Clearly, from the player’s point of view, the style of the sport has been transformed. Modern table tennis is now based on speed and strength and new strikes require excellent technical know-how.

Commercial A very popular and skilled game played indoors in pairs or doubles on a hard rectangular table with a 4cm, lightweight cellulose ball negotiated over low net in the centre of the table using circular paddles or bats. The bats are about 15cm across and are coated with rubber to impart spin - a key factor in the game. The winner is the first to score 11 points unless both players score 10 points, when the game shall be won by the first player gaining a lead of 2 points. This page started out during my years as a full-time coach as my coaching page, as a way to attract students. I put too much time into it to let it go to waste, so I still maintain it. Someday I might turn "larrytt.com" into a serious online publication of some sort. I'm the editor of USA Table Tennis Magazine, contracted through 2008. I recently did my 62nd USATT magazine - the Sept/Oct 2005 issue. (USA Table Tennis has gone through a lot of editors over the years.) I'm also their Webmaster League Director Club Programs Director , and Moderator for the USATT Forum . (Come join us on the Forum, where we can talk table tennis!) USA Table Tennis Magazine is now on newsstands I've had 981 published articles in 56 different publications, including 952 on table tennis. The first was in 1977. Many of these articles are linked online. I also have 9 published science fiction/fantasy stories You might have read my book

    by Tracey Holmes
Table tennis has a short Olympic history, although worldwide it has been one of the most popular forms of family amusement, as well as an elite sport since the turn of the century. Making its debut at Olympic level in Seoul in 1988, table tennis has earned the reputation of being the fastest ball sport on earth. While there are more than 150 member countries at international level, the sport is dominated by Asian nations. In 1988 scandal surrounded the women's events, with both the Chinese and Korean teams rumored to have asked their players to "throw" some games. In the end Korea took the gold medal in the men's singles and women's doubles, while China won the other two golds on offer. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, crowds were enthralled by many spectacular games. This established a precedent that was repeated four years later in Barcelona.
