Goals
subdivision surfaces. The next step is to record a color (rgb) value for each data point during the scanning process, and use those to create colored surface models. However, "color" is a much more complex property. Real objects are not lambertian reflectors - they look different depending on the direction from which they are viewed. Shiny surfaces show specular highlights, and some materials, like velvet, are inherently anisotropic. To achive more realistic appearance it is necessary to model and render the luminance (or radiance). Luminance is a 4D function assigning an rgb value to each surface point and viewing direction. By representing luminance as a function over the surface of an object, we obtain a " surface light field ." The overall goal of this research is modeling surface light fields and rendering them at interactive rates. The image pair below consists of renderings from different viewpoints of a reconstructed surface light field of a porcelain fish with rapid variations in diffuse and specular reflection:

3D Photography
3D photography is an emerging technology for capturing richly textured 3D models of real objects and scenes. While optical cameras measure visible light radiated from a scene, 3D photography systems measure scene geometry and color. Combining these two technologies has the potential to change the face of computer graphics by providing an effective means of constructing graphical scenes of unparalleled detail and realism.
This course presented the current state of the art in 3D photography and describes the principles behind a number of current techniques. Leading researchers in the field introduced the fundamental concepts, surveyed a variety of techniques, examined in detail a few successful approaches at the forefront of 3D photography, then reviewed optical methods, including stereo vision, photogrammetry, structured light, and laser range scanners. The course provides a forum for presenting a range of different techniques and discussing the relative merits and weaknesses of current approaches.

Powell had special "dory" boats constructed and shipped to Green River via the recently completed Central Pacific (Transcontinental) railroad. The first month of both expeditions were spent traversing canyons of the Green River around eastern end of the Uinta Mountains (also spelled "Uintah"). During this first stage of both voyages they passed through Flaming Gorge (named after the brilliant, red sandstone exposed in the cliffs), and three other canyons Powell named Horseshoe Canyon, Kingfisher Canyon, and Red Canyon.

Building a Homemade Laser Line Scanner (CS6998, Spring '01)

Summary
The goal of this project is to build a low-cost laser line scanner out of off-the-shelf parts and stuff I find around the house and to use it to construct a reasonable point-cloud scan of a recognizable object. From the point cloud, existing software can be used to create surfaces, and hopefully solid models as well (undetermined).
Contents
Hardware
The cost and performance of the system was determined partly by the hardware available. I chose the Nikon camera because I already owned it, thus reducing the entire cost to under $100. For the laser, I decided that since I would be doing image processing in software anyway, it would be far easier and more cost-effective to correct for the effects of a low-quality laser in software than by trying to get my hands on a proper research-quality laser. For image acquisition in the computer, I used my existing video card which also has video inputs. In the end, I spent the most money on parts I didn't actually use, such as mounting brackets and other junk from the hardware store, and a small batch of unuseable laser diodes (needed laser diode modules ) from digikey.

A sequence of pictures is shot using any still or video digital camera and then downloaded onto a computer where the software generates the required views. The number of pictures required varies, but for optimum results HumanEyes recommends approximately a picture taken for every degree of the scene. Each picture shot contributes to the final picture. Therefore, the more pictures taken, the truer the sense of depth achieved in the final, seamless picture. Unlike other 3D photography methods, the scene does not have to be reshot in order to make alterations to the 3D output. The original sequence of pictures can be used any number of times to create images of different sizes and depth.

on the Reel 3D catalog site. When you're ready to get started, Ebay's stereo photography category is an ideal place to look for the gear, as most of the popular stereo cameras are antiques from the 50's. The lenticular pictures are a whole other story.... contact me In April 2005, I had my first art show of lenticular imagery at MF Adams Gallery, in the DUMBO section of New York.
Go here to download a press release with an introduction to the lenticular process and images from the show; or you can look at a somewhat outdated catalog of a few early lenticular pieces.
