Here is a selection of nine of my own 3D or stereo photo pairs, taken in Australia - mostly around my home city. The old Swan Brewery building beside the Swan River, Perth The Mitchell Freeway approaching Perth. The limitation of taking one photo after the other is apparent here - the traffic has moved between photos and doesn't match up. A suburban scene near where I live in Perth. The nearest trees seem to blend in to the distant trees until viewed in 3D, when they are clearly separate. Karri forest near Pemberton, WA - part of the ten percent of old-growth karri forest that remains after logging of the rest. Some of the trees in this photo are around 90 metres tall, making my car (bottom right) look rather small. I have enlargements of these photos on my refrigerator so that I can admire the forest in 3D while waiting for the toast to burn. Yachts bathing in the evening sunlight at the Royal Perth Yacht Club on Matilda Bay. Kings Park in the left background.

Course Abstract
3D photography is the process of using cameras and light to capture the shape and appearance of real objects. This process provides a simple way of acquiring 3D models of unparalleled detail and realism by scanning them in from the real world. This course provides an introduction to the emerging area of 3D photography, focusing on the current state of the art and the principles underlying several leading approaches. After introducing fundamental concepts, the course surveys a variety of techniques and provides an in-depth analysis of a few successful approaches at the forefront of 3D photography, presented by leading researchers in the field. The focus is on passive and active optical methods, including stereo vision, photogrammetry, structured light, imaging radar, interferometry, and optical triangulation. The course concludes with a field study: capturing 3D photographs of Michelangelo's statues.
Scope
The course will cover a variety of methods for recovering shape from images. Introductory material will describe the fundamentals of cameras from lenses to CCD's and ways of calibrating them. A number of standard and emerging passive vision methods will be presented, including stereo, structure from motion, shape from focus/defocus, shape from shading, interactive photogrammetry, and voxel-based reconstruction . Active vision methods will include imaging radar, optical triangulation, moire, active stereo, active depth from defocus, and desktop shadow striping.

It is based on `weak structured lighting'; it differs from other conventional structured lighting approaches in that it requires very little hardware besides the camera: a desk-lamp, a pencil and a checkerboard. The camera faces the object, which is illuminated by the desk-lamp. The user moves a pencil in front of the light source casting a moving shadow on the object. The 3D shape of the object is extracted from the spatial and temporal location of the observed shadow. Experimental results are presented on three different scenes demonstrating that the error in reconstructing the surface is less than 1%.

One of the key challenges in computer vision and graphics is to compute real-world 3D shape from images. This has many applications in different fields such as archaeology, forensics, robotics, industrial inspection, medecine, advertising and special effects.
The goal of this class is to provide students with a good understanding of how 3D object shape can be estimated from images. The main concepts will be studied and practical algorithms and approaches will be discussed. The main focus of this course will consist of building a system capable of measuring the 3D shape of real-world objects.
    Course Objectives
  • To understand the concepts that allow to recover 3D shape from images. Explore the state of the art in 3D photography.

    OVERVIEW
Recent advances in computer hardware have made possible the efficient rendering of realistic 3D models in inexpensive PCs, something that was possible with high end visualization workstations only a few years ago. But how can we automatically produce realistic 3D models of our surroundings. How can we recover models of static structures (such as buildings), of moving humans, or even of such tiny structures as proteins? Which input sensors shall we use (3D laser scanners or digital color cameras), which techniques are appropriate (stereo vision, image based rendering or direct 3D modeling), which algorithmic frameworks can be used? Those answers depend on the applications that utilize the constructed models: physical simulation, reverse engineering, or graphics rendering only.
This class will cover the field of 3D Photography -the process of automatically creating 3D texture mapped models of objects- in detail. Several exciting applications benefit by this technology:

    Description
Systems for automatically measuring the 3D shape of real objects are becoming used more and more widely, with applications in fields such as advertising, special effects for movies, and quality control during manufacturing. This seminar/project course focuses on building a complete system capable of measuring the shape and appearance of real-world objects. Lecture/discussion topics include 3D scanning hardware, algorithms for mesh registration and 3D reconstruction, shape representations, and appearance modeling. Prerequisites: The course is open to all students that have taken a course in computer graphics or computer vision, or have the equivalent background. In particular, students should have a basic familiarity with linear algebra, and should have significant C/C++ programming experience. Requirements: All students, whether receiving credit for the course or auditing, must attend classes and participate in the group project(s).

He then faded each new frame into the target frame by changing the opacity, first 75%, then 50% and finally 25%. I also changed the delay to "none."

It all started when I found a Kodak Realist stereo camera for sale at a benefit auction. The camera itself never did work right (actually, it's in really good shape, just needs to be cleaned and adjusted) but it served as the inspiration for experimentation and discovery. Recently I have developed somewhat of an aptitude for producing pretty decent anaglyphs. I still enjoy free-view pairs but I believe they are not as universally viewable as anaglyphs. I will post some from time to time. There are still some lighting situations that are impossible to convert to acceptable anaglyphs. I've put together a brief synopsis of my learnings through the years.
