South Rim in Winter 1B (Right halves - gc01Bii / gc01Bx) HOW THEY'RE TAKEN Since the early 1970s, I'd been taking three-dimensional (3-D) stereo slidesnot with a 3-D camera, but with various standard single-lens-reflex (SLR) 35mm cameras. To do this, I first took a photo looking through the viewfinder with one eye, putting a point of a framing mark (or a dirt spot on the prism!) on some object in the distance. After the film was advanced, I moved the viewfinder to the other eye while keeping my head stationary, aligned the mark on the same object in the distance, and took the second photo. This process has been made easier since the introduction of auto-wind cameras. HOW THEY'RE VIEWED After processing the slides, I place the left of the pair of slides into an old Gitzo dual slide viewer for the 3-D effect. This viewer was made by the Gitzo tripod company in Europe, but was discontinued many years ago. It has two single slide viewers mounted on a plastic rail (with thumb screws) and adjustable oculars for focusing. You can get the same effect by purchasing two small individual slide viewers (the kind you hold up to the light to see the slides) and holding them together for viewing with both eyes. (I also experimented with gluing them together, finding I needed to place something under the joint before gluing so that they were slightly angled inward when held up to the light.) If you want to build your own 3-D slide viewer, check out the

Award-winning photographer Gary Greenspoon's Victoria studio is filled with
props and equipment, including a 3-D camera with a macro lens attachment.
Three-dimensional photographer Gary Greenspoon travelled halfway round the
globe to capture pictures of Tibet, and hopefully gain an audience with the
Dalai Lama.
It was 1996, and he had lost his job and become absorbed in 3-D photography.
He was also looking for new direction in his life, at a time of religious and political upheaval in Tibet. Greenspoon formed a non-profit society to work toward the freedom of Tibet and decided to visit Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama lives in a northern Indian Monastery, and create a slide show to raise awareness. "The interview was granted and I spent a long time composing three questions that I wanted to ask the Dalai Lama. When I entered the audience room there

STEREO (3-D) PHOTOGRAPHY Between 1952 and 1953 my family lived in New York City. This was the peak of the 50's "stereo craze" where Hollywood was cranking out 3-D movies, camera stores had a variety of stereo cameras to satisfy market demand, and every news-stand carried a wide range of 3-D comic books. I was fascinated by stereo photography, but a young fellow in the 6th and 7th grade can hardly afford quality camera gear. I do remember haunting all the local camera shops, lusting after cameras I couldn't afford! I must have been a real pest, but I remember being treated very well in all those shops, probably because I showed real interest in the subject and had done my homework. Our family had a Stereoscope (Holmes) viewer and I did have a Kodak Brownie camera that used 127 roll film. I am quite proud of the fact that I figured out, on my own, that I could take stereo pictures with that camera by shifting the camera between shots. I happily shot stereo with this improvised "system" - mostly black and white (due to financial constraints), but once I did get carried away and shot a roll of early Kodacolor print film. Much later in life I got a used TDC Colorist stereo camera and the matching projector, but by then the craze was over and it got harder and harder to get film processed and mounted. Now, almost 50 years after my first experiments, you might think that stereo photography was just a historical curiosity, but you would be wrong. Individual stereo enthusiasts and stereo clubs in the larger metropolitan areas have kept the flame alive and now we have computers, digital cameras, and the Internet and new opportunities for stereo photography abound! I have set up this web-site to provide a number of useful functions:

3D Filmmakers
New Book: 3-D Filmmakers Although numerous books about conventional filmmaking exist, none has solely addressed the challenges and production requirements of making stereoscopic motion pictures. Until now. Stereographer and film historian, Ray Zone, presents the insights of twenty-one professionals who have worked in this specialized field.
In this unique collection of interviews, Zone explores the art and craft of 3-D filmmaking with producers, screenwriters, directors, and cinematographers. The interviews range from a discussion with Arch Oboler - producer of Bwana Devil , the 1952 feature that triggered the "boom" of 3-D films - to producers and cinematographers who have worked with single-strip 3-D film production in the 1970s and '80s, 3-D films in theme parks, current IMAX films, and the new and still evolving format of digital 3-D cinema.
These interviews provide an unprecedented look at the unique challenges of producing stereoscopic motion pictures. Over five decades of this unique medium are covered, and will interest aspiring filmmakers, stereo photography enthusiasts, cinema buffs, devotees of popular culture, and film historians. Aidtopia Aid The limitations of Web graphics and computer monitors make it impossible to showcase 3D photography in all of its glory. Here are some anaglyphs made from some full-color shots. To view them, you need a pair of red-blue (red-cyan) anaglyph glasses. The red-green glasses that I included in my Christmas cards a couple years ago will also work. View with the red lens over your left eye. The photo on the left was captured with a Loreo stereo print camera. I scanned the negative to make the anaglyph. Although the image size is a little small and grainy, I like the flexibility of my Loreo, and I think I'll be using it more. The photo on the right was taken at Rob and Toni's Second Annual Am-Am!! tournament. Most of the 3D photography that I do, including this image, is with a pair of 35mm SLR cameras mounted on a slide bar on a tripod or monopod. I've been experimenting with scanning and converting stereo pairs for display on the Web. Most viewing is done in a hand-held viewer or with a pair of polarized slide projectors which doesn't distort the colors like anaglyph viewing does. These anaglyphs were made by scanning slides and negatives with a Hewlett-Packard Photo Smart Photo Scanner and combining the images with Paint Shop Pro . I recommend both of these products. If you're interested in learning more about 3D photography, I recommend

Graham's Guide to 3D Photography
This page describes a simple method of taking and viewing 3D photos that anybody can use. Anybody with one camera (any type) and two eyeballs - with no need for any special equipment, viewing devices or funny glasses. The accompanying pages show examples of Australian and American scenes in 3D using this method. These pages are part of the Stereoscopic 3D Webring.
In a nutshell
When we look at something with our two eyes, we see in three dimensions because our brain interprets depth by comparing the two images from the left and right eyes. To simulate this photographically we need two photos of the same scene, taken from slightly different positions. This can be done using two cameras mounted together, or a multi-lens camera designed for stereo photography, but can also be done with just one camera - even the most basic type. Its simply a matter of taking one photo, moving the camera to one side, then taking another photo. Same scene, slightly different viewpoint. The easiest and most flexible method of viewing the two photos is the "cross-eye" method, where the photos are placed side by side with the "left" photo on the right, and "right" photo on the left. By slightly crossing the eyes, each eye looks at the photo meant for it. When the images match up and focus, the scene appears in life-like 3D, or a good approximation of it. This method can be hard to learn for the first time, but once mastered it is really quite easy. One advantage of this method, apart from requiring no equipment for viewing, is that the photos can be any size. Big enlargements on a lounge room wall can be enjoyed in 3D from across the room.
