Middle East
Apr 9, 2005 US designs on Syria's Kurds
By Sami Moubayed
DAMASCUS - One of the overriding fears in the Middle East is how Kurds might be manipulated by outside forces to create havoc in the region, as has happened before.
On May 29, 1945, while the French were trying to topple the Syrian government, they bombed Damascus and ignited violence in the Hay al-Akrad neighborhood of the Syrian capital, where the city's Kurds resided.
The French told the Kurds that acting prime minister Jamil Mardam Bey had fled to Jordan, spreading a rumor that president Shukri al-Quwatli had been killed, leaving Syria in chaos. It was now up to the Kurds to take matters into their own hands, the French said. The Kurds quickly took to the streets, occupying police stations, destroying government offices, and raising the Kurdish flag to replace the Syrian one. They were calmed, and brought back to order by Mardam Bey.

Iraqis Coalition troops The United Nations VIEW RESULTS RELATED Rumsfeld warns Syria about aiding Iraq LONDON, England (CNN) Iraq's reconstruction gives Syria a chance to make "a decisive break" from past policies supporting Saddam Hussein's regime including possible hiding of weapons of mass destruction or giving safe haven to regime members, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said. "We look to the government of Syria ... to desist from any action they've already taken in terms of harboring people from this regime ... or otherwise assisting them," he told parliament Thursday. "It's very much in Syria's interest as a neighbor of Iraq to cooperate fully with the coalition." Iraq's other neighbors Turkey, Jordan, and Iran have an important interest and contribution to make in Iraq's reconstruction as well, Straw said. The foreign minister said next week he will visit a number of Persian Gulf states those meetings coming on the heels of his trips to Berlin, Brussels, Paris, and Madrid, where he discussed the coalition's vision for a postwar Iraq.

Sheila MacVicar: Did Saddam go to Syria?
CNN's Sheila MacVicar Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report (CNN) – As coalition forces continue to secure Iraq, questions continue about what happened to former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, as well as key figures in his regime. CNN correspondent Sheila MacVicar spoke to CNN anchor Carol Costello from Damascus, Syria, Saturday. COSTELLO: Sheila, good morning. Many questions to ask you about Syria. Of course, there is still the thought out there that members of Saddam Hussein's regime and maybe even Saddam Hussein himself have gone into Syria. MACVICAR: That is indeed one of the big questions, and we've been hearing about that over the course of the last number of days from various U.S. administration officials: Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Assistant Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, and yesterday from the president himself when he was speaking at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. The American administration has been saying publicly that they believe that some members of the regime or some family members of the regime may have come into Syria. But it's important to note, Carol, that Rumsfeld yesterday characterized that information himself as "scraps of intelligence."

Welcome to Doug Burnett's Travelogues: What could be better - a new city and plenty of time to explore. I love to just wander around with no particular place to be, taking each day as it comes. Of course, travel is not always like that: some days you must rise early and run to catch the train; others you end up wandering around in the rain looking for a decent hotel. But it's the hope that there will be something truly remarkable around the next corner that keeps me going. Here are my most recent trips: New: Pakistan, April 2005 This was an incredibly hot trip: Delhi to Lahore and Peshawar and finally up the Khyber Pass. Then back to Amritsar to see the Golden Temple before cooling off in Kathmandu. New: Photo album: Vietnam, January 2005 Motorcycle recklesness in Hue ; a brush with the military in Da Nang ; custom-made clothes in Hoi An ; and then my past catches up with me in Saigon . Also travel details Photo album: A silk buying trip. I started in Isaan (northeast Thailand) where I visited some weaving villages, followed by a stop in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, to buy more silk. Photo album: South India, January 2004
