History History of Homs This city goes back to long before the Roman times, although it was always overshadowed by the kingdom of Hama. This city was known in Roman times as the city of Emesa and had strong connections with the Severid Dynasty. Julia Domna the daughter of a high priest of Emesa married Septimius Severus, while he was stationed here. He later became emperor of Rome. When he was transferred to Rome Julia took over and was a principal figure in the dynasty's fortunes. Emesa's fortunes were always tied with the trade city of Palmyra . As long as Palmyra flourished so did Emesa. When Zenobia was defeated at Palmyra in about 272 AD, Emesa declined. Christianity established itself in Emesa early on, as 3rd to 7th century catacombs were found in houses in the eastern quarter, where quite a large population of Christians still live. After Arab conquest, it is said that 500 of the prophet's companions came and settled here. Homs became important, again but by the 18th century Homs had sunk into a state of weakness. 63. A Brief History Of Syria
A Brief history of Modern syria. syria fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1516 and remained a part of their Ottoman Empire for four centuries.
http://www.damascus-online.com/history/brief.htm
A Brief History of Modern Syria Syria fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1516 and remained a part of their Ottoman Empire for four centuries. During this period, Syria witnessed great deterioration in economic, social, and political fields. In 1916, the Arabs took the opportunity of World War I to revolt against the Turkish rule. Arabs received British military help and promises that after the War ends, Arab countries will be granted full independence. On 6 May 1916, the Ottoman authorities hanged tens of Syrian national leaders in Damascus and Beirut. This day is still celebrated in Syria and Lebanon as the Martyrs' Day. The Arab armies under leadership of Sharif Hussein of Mecca soon achieved victory over the Turks, and in early 1918, Arab and British armies entered Damascus ending 400 years of Ottoman occupation. Later in 1918, Syria was declared an independent kingdom under King Faisal I, son of Sharif Hussein. However, France and Britain had their own plans in mind. In an agreement known as the Sykes-Picot agreement, they decided to divide the Middle East into French and British 'spheres of influence'. Syria was to be put under French mandate. In early 1920, French troops landed on the Syrian coast, after several battles with poorly equipped Syrian rebels, they managed to get the country under their control. In 1923, the League of Nation officially recognized French mandate over Syria. Syrians decided to resist the new invaders. In 1925, they revolted against the mandate. Several battles took place in Jabal al-Arab region and in Damascus. The capital was severely damaged during French air raids in retaliation for the city's support for rebels. It was until 1936 when France finally accepted to give Syria partial independence according to the Franco-Syrian treaty signed in Paris, but French troops remained on the Syrian soil and continued to influence the Syrian policies. During World War II, Syria witnessed military confrontations between French troops loyal to the Vichy government, allied with the Germans, and Free French troops allied with the British. In 1941, the British army, along with its French allies, occupied the country, and promised full independence after the end of the war.

67. The Lure Of Aleppo
Cradled in a bowl of dry hills in northern syria, the city of Aleppo presents Ottoman, as Godfrey Goodwin judges in A history of Ottoman Architecture.
http://almashriq.hiof.no/syria/900/the_lure_of_aleppo/
Cradled in a bowl of dry hills in northern Syria, the city of Aleppo presents an austere facade to those entering her ancient gates. Serious, tightlipped, sober - the adjectives often applied to her people convey a dignity befitting Aleppo's age, for she vies with Damascus and Sana'a as the oldest existing city in the world. Though eclipsed by the political and economic hegemony of modern Damascus, Aleppo preserves more purely the essence of a traditional Arab city. She is the northernmost of Syria's great inland towns, including Damascus, Homs and Hamah. Halfway between the Euphrates and the coast, Aleppo's location made her a natural commercial depot and a busy center of traffic. Pilgrims and traders from the north also transited the city, tracing the edge of the mountains rather than the rugged coast, down through Damascus to Makkah. The dynamism and raw energy of Aleppo have captivated travelers for ages. Gertrude Bell, in Amurath to Amurath, was one. If there be a better gate to Asia than Aleppo, I do not know it. A virile population, a splendid architecture, the quickening sense of a fine Arab tradition have combined to give the town an individuality sharply cut, and more than any Syrian city she see ms instinct with an inherent vitality. The princes who drew the line of massive masonry about her flanks and led her armies against the emperors of the West, the merchants who gathered the wealth of inner Asia into her bazaars and bartered it against the riches of the Levant Company have handed down the spirit of enterprise to the latest of her sons.

Syria Today: 5000 years in the making Historical ages in Syria in the third millennium B.C. the remains of Ebla discovered a few years ago on Tel Mardikh, south of Aleppo, confirm the fact that a prosperous Kingdom existed in the second half of the third millennium. B.C. The finds at Tel Hariri Marie on the Euphrates River have furnished valuable information about the ancient history of Syria and her relations with the kingdoms of Mesopotamia. ancient Syria was the target of some more powerful neighboring kingdoms at the time. the Akkadians controlled Syria having defeated the kingdom of Ebla in 2250 B.C., and the Egyptians sought to rule the entire of Syria in the second millennium B.C.
In the 12th century B.C. however, the eastern coastline of the Mediterranean experienced dramatic changes through the attacks launched by the "Sea Peoples" and by the successive waves of immigration by Semitic tribes, which eventually led to the rise of new kingdoms such as the Aramaeans in the cities of Damascus, Hama, and Aleppo, and the Canaanite city states on the coastline such as Arwad, Tyre and Jbeil Great Syrian Sites: Assad . org

Archaeologists have demonstrated that Syria was the center of one of the most ancient civilizations on earth. Around the excavated city of Ebla in northern Syria, discovered in 1975, a great Semitic empire spread from the Red Sea north to Turkey and east to Mesopotamia from 2500 to 2400 B.C. The city of Ebla alone during that time had a population estimated at 260,000. Scholars believe the language of Ebla to be the oldest Semitic language. Syria was occupied successively by Canaanites, Phoenicians, Hebrews, Arameans, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Nabataeans, Byzantines, and, in part, Crusaders before finally coming under the control of the Ottoman Turks. Syria is significant in the history of Christianity; Paul was converted on the road to Damascus and established the first organized Christian Church at Antioch in ancient Syria, from which he left on many of his missionary journeys. Damascus, settled about 2500 B.C., is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It came under Muslim rule in A.D. 636. Immediately thereafter, the city's power and prestige reached its peak, and it became the capital of the Omayyad Empire, which extended from Spain to India from A.D. 661 to A.D. 750, when the Abbasid caliphate was established at Baghdad, Iraq.

Damascus, Syria is a city of mystery, calling to mind glittering market stalls and robed mystics. There is an abundance of attractions and an array of memorable moments to choose from here. The reader will learn the best things to see, what to avoid, and how to follow practical precautions in order to have the best vacation possible. For some, Damascus is an image, an icon of Islamic mystery and gilded splendor like Baghdad , its Iraqi neighbor. Damascus may no longer be a city such as Aladdin would have remembered, but there is still much to see for which Damascus should rightly be considered famous. Syria is a neighbor to many Middle Eastern countries that evoke Biblical splendors and Islamic architectural beauty. Palestine and Israel, land of the patriarchs of monotheism, Jordan, Iraq (the land of Mesopotamia) and Lebanon all share borders with this ancient city. If you are planning a visit to Damascus, Syria's capital, be sure to bring plenty of suntan lotion, cool clothing, and lots and lots of film! But there are more serious checkpoints you must consider for a safe, successful vacation.
          Practical Precautions
The U.S. State Department gives many extremely important requirements for traveling to Syria. Since this is a difficult and unstable area to visit, it will be important for you to check the current necessities for a Syrian visit, whether for business or a vacation, such as acquiring an up-to-date passport and VISA. Government sites like the State Department are helpful in explaining what is needed to make your trip as safe as possible. Please remember to always be in sync with the requirements of the Syrian government. When all of these safety checkpoints are adhered to, get ready to plan your unforgettable trip to Damascus!

Dankowitz* Introduction The upcoming Arab Socialist Ba'th Party's 10th national convention, slated later this week between June 6 through 9, 2005 in Syria, has sparked hope in the country for internal reform. The convention will take place amidst growing pressure on the Syrian regime, from both within and without. Domestically, criticism of the holdup in Syria's reform, development, and modernization processes is increasing, and human rights and civil society activists are becoming more active in the wake of developments in Lebanon following the February 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Al-Hariri. Regionally and internationally, there have been significant changes in the past few years that concern Syria - most important among them the fall of the Ba'th regime in Iraq, as well as the American presence in the region, U.N. Security Council Resolution 1559 demanding that Syrian forces exit Lebanon, and the implementation of that resolution in late April 2005. Predictions in Syria that the convention will result in essential change in the country began to appear following Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad's March 5, 2005 address to the Syrian parliament, in which he expressed hopes that the convention would be "the greatest leap" in Syria's history, and in which he stated that the domestic situation was at the top of his list of priorities.

Chronology of Christianity in Syria
: the conversion of Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus. Already Jesus was known in Syria. : Paul's first mission to Antioch. Jesus' disciples were called Christians for the first time in this city. End of 1st century : Christianity spread to Edessa (today, Urfa, Turkey). From about 110 : St Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch, inaugurated an era of martyrs. 2nd-4th century : a school of theology developed in Antioch, one of whose most prestigious disciples was John Chrysostom. Monasticism flourished from the 4th-5th century with thousands of ascetics, monks and cenobites. St Simeon the Stylite and St Maron lived not far from Aleppo. 4th century : Edessa became the site of a Syrian-Aramaic theology school. St Ephraem, Bardesane and Afraate spread Christianity in inner Syria. 4th-6th century : Christians spread to other areas. 5th century : Syria was at the heart of the Monophysite controversy, and the Bishops' sees were contended by Monophysites and Catholics. The Council of Chalcedon failed to end the disputes. St Maron's monks, faithful to Rome, began to seek refuge in Lebanon. 7th century : At the Umayyade court in Damascus many professionals were Christians. Caliph Omar dismissed Christian officials and his successor obliged them to wear distinctive dress. In 722 there were still 3.8 million Christians in Syria out of a population of 4 million.

Hand made carpets Located on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea, Syria is a Middle Eastern Arab country with a long, rich history.  Perhaps one of the most alluring aspects of Syria is the hospitality of its people towards strangers and travelers.  The kindness and tolerance exhibited by the Syrian people is often attributed to a number of historical factors.  These include Syria’s location as a crossroads between various civilizations, and the mutual generosity and cooperation that results from living in a desert landscape.  Arabic is the official language of Syria and the mother tongue of approximately 90 percent of the population. Other languages such as Kurdish, Armenian, Aramaic, Circassian, French, and English are also spoken in various regions of the country.  Almost three-fourths of Syrians are Sunni Muslims, while minority Shi'ite, Druze and Alawites account for 15 percent of the population.  Various Christian sects represent the remaining 10 percent.
