ETHNOGRAPHY OF MODERN SYRIA
Ethnographically, the modern inhabitants of Syria consist of Arabs, Turks, Jews, and Franks or Europeans. (1) The Syrians are direct descendants of the ancient Arameans who inhabited the country from about the first millennium B.C. and who spoke Aramaic. Most of these embraced Christianity Great Hermon , are still several nomadic Turkish tribes, or Turcomans, whose mode of life is the same as that of the Bedouin Arabs. (4) The Jews who remained in the country are but few in number; most of those who now reside in Palestine are comparatively recent settlers from Europe. (5) The Franks (Europeans) form a very small proportion of the population. Distinct from them are the so-called "Levantines", who are either Europeans or descendants of Europeans, who have entirely adopted the manners of the country.

The Motherland, Phoenicia Proper
By the 2nd millennium BC the Phoenicians had already extended their influence along the coast of the Levant by a series of settlements, some well known, some virtually nothing but names. Well known throughout history are Joppa (Tel Aviv-Yafo) and Dor (later Tantura, modern Nasholim) in the south. The geographic boundaries of the territory were Phoenicians lived are vague, and the name Phoenicia may be applied to all those places on the shores of the eastern Mediterranean where the Phoenicians established colonies in Cyprus, North Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, and Iberia. More often it refers to the heart of the territory where the great Phoenician cities, notably Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos stood ( corresponding roughly to the coast of present-day Lebanon with adjoining parts of modern Syria, Turkey and Israel probably somewhere around the lower right edge of Turkey on the Mediterranean in the North and the upper cost of Sinia in the South through

    Introduction
Following the breakup of the Ottoman Empire during World War I, Syria was administered by the French until independence in 1946. In the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Syria lost the Golan Heights to Israel. Since 1976, Syrian troops have been stationed in Lebanon, ostensibly in a peacekeeping capacity. In recent years, Syria and Israel have held occasional peace talks over the return of the Golan Heights.

A recent dateline on the front page of the New York Times: Aleppo. How many Americans know where Aleppo is? Is this the beginning of the countdown to Bush's bloody way of teaching geography? We've been through this before. Before Gulf War II who knew the names of any cities or towns in Iraq besides Baghdad? Americans now know Falluja. Here, on November 2nd, 16 GI's died as guerillas shot down a US helicopter. It's also where, in April, US troops fired on Sunni protestors killing at least 14. We know Mosul; that's where Saddam's sons were blasted to smithereens. We now know Basra, Tikrit and Najaf. We learn geography through fire and explosions. We learn through severed heads, crushed bellies and amputated limbs. We learned Kandahar, Mazar-e-Sharif and Herat in Afghanistan as US bombers turned ancient cities into rubble. Is Syria next?

    History (and a Little Geography)
Notwithstanding current political disputes, Lebanon and Syria share a narrow strip of land 400 miles long by 150 miles wide, extending from the Taurus range and the Euphrates in the north, to the Sinaitic peninsula in the south, hemmed in by the Mediterranean Sea to the west and the desert to the east. According to Dr. Philip Hitti, an early Twentieth Century historian, occupants of this land are a mixed Semitic race, descended from ancient Phoenician-Canaanite and Aramaen Israelite tribes who arrived between 2500 and 1500 B.C., and Arabs who drifted in from the desert and gradually passed from a nomadic to an agricultural life. Arabic spoken today reflects this heritage. Modern-day inhabitants of Lebanon and Syria - and their Arab-American cousins - may be descended from Greek settlers of the Seleucid period, Crusaders, or Kurdish and Persian invaders and traders of more recent times. From the early 16th Century until World War I, Syria and the Mount Lebanon region were part of the Ottoman Empire. For this reason, most Lebanese and Syrians immigrating before 1918 had Turkish passports, and were grouped in U. S. Census Abstracts under the heading "Turkish" or "Asian." After the First World War, Lebanon and Syria operated under French mandate, gaining independence in the 1940s.
