Stop laughing and get Syria(s)
Please excuse the two geographic-pun-based grave headlines in a row. Won't happen again, unless Bush decides to cower at the heels of Iraq's neighbor to the east. In which case, get ready for something awful, along the lines of "And Iran, I ran so far away..." So, getting serious: James Ridgeway at the Village Voice (whose weekly "Mondo Washington" column is an excellent, must-read synopsis of national events) details the apparently increasing consensus that, much like we rather flippantly made note of a few weeks back , Syria is next in line to bear the wrath of administration neocons. This includes the possibility that, rather than engaging in yet another annual American attack on Muslim nations, the U.S. may indirectly sponsor Israel's own efforts on this front: Israel is becoming more and more active as a U.S. military surrogate in the Middle East. Last weekend Der Spiegel reported that Israel was ready to launch an attack against Iran's nuclear sites to prevent them from becoming operational. And, basing its reports on U.S. government sources, the

    http://www.american.edu/TED/etown/distance/syria.htm
Introduction to the Syrian Land. Socy 556-09 LINKS: The Distant Learning Initiative Requirements for Distant Learners Getting Started Description of the Course ... Schedule of Assignment The Distance Learning initiative The distance learning initiative is an explicit demonstration of our modern world that has been characterized very much by the fast growing technology that is bringing the whole universe into one single entity. With the advent of the Internet, the world has become our campus where it is possible to teach almost any course to anyone who lives in any spot of the globe. We, the American University, have only recently started this initiative of teaching courses online and we would appreciate any helpful comments or ideas. Distance Learning has its advantages and its disadvantages. The great aspect about Distance Learning is that it opens opportunities to a wider student audience, many of which cannot afford attending on-campus classes. Also, it is more convenient for outside speakers to participate in teaching some lectures while the are in their own country or back at home. In addition, and most importantly, it provides a learning opportunity for those of different classes, social, cultural, economic, ethnic and experiential backgrounds to fully participate in obtaining their education and knowledge through means that are to some extent easy to be attained. Some courses are easier to be taught than others are; those include the ones that require more visual learning than audio or physical learning. In any way, our course requirements conform to the visual (reading) learning experience and belong to the category where acquiring the needed sufficient knowledge online is an affordable task to be done.

The hard-won status of a University of Washington scholar in Damascus becomes another casualty of war By JAKE ELLISON
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER On the afternoon of March 18, Monica Meadows and a friend were hanging out and joking around in their apartment in Syria when the phone call came through that started everyone crying. Nobody had been physically hurt, but the call from Meadows' parents signaled that the war in Iraq was claiming one of its earliest casualties: the hard-won status of a University of Washington scholar in Damascus. Meadows, 27, a graduate student and Seattle resident studying pre-Islamic literature, had immersed herself and her 4-year-old daughter in the Arabic language and culture of Syria for more than a year when the U.S. State Department pulled its diplomats out of that country. That action, formalized with a series of travel warnings telling all Americans they should leave more than a dozen countries around Iraq for fear of turmoil from the coming war, forced Meadows to drop her work at the University of Damascus. Had she stayed despite the warning, she would have lost her enrollment status at the UW and all her grants and financial aid.
