Boys in the water - Czech male synchronized swimmers dream of Olympic glory
[12-05-2005] By Jaroslava Halkova Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s Synchronized swimming used to be a female sport only. Thin, fit, sporty girls disappear under water only to reappear with the next loud beat and spin with the tips of their toes pointing to the heavens. It's an impressive and tough sport - gymnastics in water. Just a few years ago the idea of a male team of synchronized swimmers would have caused a good few smirks, but today they have their very own international championship. It doesn't yet have hard-and-fast rules and only very few teams take part, but one of them is from the Czech Republic. The Czech team, calling themselves "Krasoplavci" - which roughly translates as figure or beauty swimmers are the first and so far the only team here.

LOCAL LINKS Synchronicity! By Julie Rooney/Enterprise staff writer Then: In 1999, swim instructor Rose Cholewinski began a synchronized swimming program in Davis. Called the Aquastarz, the team of nine girls practiced at Davis Athletic Club, concluding the season with a show for parents. As Cholewinski describes it, "The show was in the training pool of the Davis Athletic Club. There were no chairs, no bleachers, no underwater sound system." As the years went by, a sound system was purchased, chairs were rented for the show and sequins began appearing on swimsuits. By 2004, those girls who joined the team when they were just 6 to 8 years old were now entering their teen years and were too tall to perform synchronized swimming in the 51/2-foot-deep Davis Athletic Club lap pool. "The older girls needed to go to the next level," Cholewinski says. "They needed to be coached by someone who could teach them things that I could no longer teach them. "

Too often issues of sexism against men get ignored in American popular culture, especially in American sports culture. The issue of men's participation in synchronized swimming is a good example of the struggles that men are currently going through in order to ensure that gender equality in the sports world applies to everyone.

Synchronized swimming is one of only three Olympic disciplines in which only women are allowed to compete (the other two are Rhythmic gymnastics and Softball). The pool where Synchronized swimming takes place is 30m long by 20m wide and is 3m deep. There are two sets of marks, one for technical merit and one for artistic impression. For the first time in Olympic Games' history, all aquatics events will take place in a single venue, the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA). Sycnchronized swimming is the last of the four aquatic events and will take place from 23 to 27 August. pj/nc
