The Olympic Sport of Edgecrafting
I am not planning on watching much of the Athens Olympics televised by NBC. Why not? Well, NBC’s coverage of the major sports and Olympic events like Gymnastics, Swimming, Basketball, and the Opening/Closing ceremonies is too sanitized, too slick, too expected, and too commoditized (i.e. lowest common denominator) for me. However, I do plan to watch the “edgecraft” sports being televised on Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA cable channels. Televising uncommon but common sports like Badminton, Table Tennis, Field Hockey, Water Polo, and Archery is classic Seth Godin Edgecrafting SETH GODIN EDGECRAFTING REFRESHER COURSE
As detailed in Free Prize Inside , Edgecrafting is about going to the “edges” to find innovation. On the outer edges, one finds the out-of-the-ordinary which can be deemed extreme, offbeat, captivating, and downright remarkable. These remarkable goings-on may be far from being mainstream, but they are definitely worthy of talking about. And discovering talk value is where edgecrafting crafts Free Prizes.

No moss grew under the feet of this young woman. From her early interest in synchronized swimming at the age of 17 until her death at age 89, Norma Olsen was synchro's international ambassador. Norma first worked water ballet routines into her Red Cross Learn to Swim classes in the late 20's in rural South Dakota. Marrying and moving to Cedar Falls, Iowa, she became the state's first synchronized swimming chairman. When daughter Zoe Ann needed more advanced coaching for her diving, the family moved again, this time to Oakland, California. The move proved successful for Zoe Ann. She became Olympic springboard silver medalist in 1948 and bronze medalist in 1962, and preceded her mother into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an honoree. Norma put her energies into the water extravaganzas and arranged water shows throughout California, the finest since Billy Rose's Aquacades of the late 30's and early 40's. The shows were so popular that by 1949, Norma traveled with her teams to Hong Kong and the Philippines, promoting water shows and synchronized swimming. By 1951, she and Mrs. Richard Pawson entered the Pacific Coast's first team into the National Championships. Norma's Athens Synchronized Swimming Team reigned as national champions from 1952 to 1960. Norma, with Ross and Dawn Bean became coaching and promoting legends at the Athens Club.

Young swimmer from Fallbrook hopes to synchronize her wishes
By Kevin Gemmell COMMUNITY SPORTS WRITER 10:34 a.m. July 29, 2005
LAURA EMBRY / Union-Tribune Synchronized swimmer Brooke Abel of Fallbrook is training for next month's Junior Pan American Games, which will be hled in Orlando, Fla. "We are basically drowning ourselves for five minutes," said Abel, 17, a member of the junior national team. "You're holding your breath for more than a minute while rotating underwater. Then you have to pop up and have a big smile on your face. And at the same time, you are trying not to pass out. You basically can't look like you are tired, even though you are." Abel was on her game last week at the U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships in Poway. Competing in the junior division, the Fallbrook resident brought home gold in two events (solo and figures) and silver in two others (duet and team). Over the last seven years, Abel has spent as much as 24 hours a week in (or under) the water, and another two hours a day lifting weights and hitting the cardio machines.

"These are the latest targets we've set," said Yu Li, an official with China Swimming Administrative Center. She was in the city to supervise the national youth championship.
"We even eye the gold medal in the 2008 Games," she said.
Since Beijing was awarded last year the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games , Chinese sports associations have gradually adjustedtheir targets for the next two Olympic Games.
China is currently second to Japan in Asia in the sport and ranks among the world's top eight.
"Although the sport does not have a long history in China, we'dmade amazing progress," Yu said.

Shrinking the Olympics? That's Bunko
By John Branch / The Fresno Bee (Updated Wednesday, June 8, 2005, 5:40 AM) It wasn't long ago that ballroom dancing and bridge were considered potential Olympic sports. And you had to wonder if cheerleading, hot-dog eating, four-square, Red Rover, channel surfing, Bunko and video poker were on their way, too. Fortunately and finally, the Olympic movement is showing restraint. But, for now, synchronized events or ones that include waving colorful ribbons around are safe. Some key Olympic decisions are about to be made, not counting the July 6 vote on which city will host the 2012 Summer Games. (Psst. It'll be Paris.) The vote carrying more suspense comes two days later. Using secret ballots, the 117-member International Olympic Committee will determine the Olympic fate of all 28 sports, one at a time. Majority rules. The sport stays. Or it goes.

Synchronized swimming
By EMILY NIPPS, Times Staff Writer Published August 8, 2004 ABOUT THE SPORT: Evolved from the elegant water ballet of the early 1900s and popularized by 1940s underwater actor and athlete Esther Williams, synchronized swimming is one of the more showy, captivating sports. It took on a new look in 1996 when the solo and duet events were dropped for the team format (eight performers in the water at once). Duets returned in 2000. Competitions are judged on technical and free routines. The technical routine requires the execution of nine required elements in a specific order within 2 minutes, 50 seconds for teams (eight elements in 2:20 for duets). The free routine allows competitors to choose the choreography and music and has a longer time limit. LOOKING GOOD: A lot of time and effort is put into a swimmer's appearance. Unflavored gelatin is used to sculpt hair off the face, and swimmers sometimes decorate their hair with glitter or paint. Many swimmers use more aesthetically appealing gelatin plugs rather than a nose clip to keep water from their sinuses. And each swimmer must wear an identical smile, no matter how difficult or painful a routine might be.

  • I am trying to be excited about the Olympic Games in Athens.
  • I watched the opening ceremonies on Friday night. Dear Mr. Mullings: Are you telling us the truth? You watched the entire opening ceremonies? Including Katie talking about the geopolitical situation in Freedonia as all three of its athletes (Harpo, Chico, and Groucho - Zeppo and Gummo having dropped out) marched into the stadium? Signed, The American Association of Psychology (Paranormal Division)
  • All right. I didn't watch ALL of the opening ceremonies. Nobody did. As the WashPost's Tom Shales wrote, "'Thank God for the commercials,' said a talented and usually patient young woman who was among those I watched the show with."
  • Notwithstanding the tortured construct of that sentence, that talented and patient young woman spoke for all of us.
  • Having co-host Bob Costas blurt out that badminton was going to become the cult favorite of these Olympics much the way curling did in the Winter Olympics two years ago was - how to put this a gently as possible - drug talk.
  • Hey, Bob! Ain't gonna happen. An overwhelming number of Americans over the age of eight believe Badminton is as much an Olympic sport as synchronized swimming which, at least, features girls in bathing suits.

The remark echoes all over the north end of the Santa Clara Swim Center, and even those who have no idea what it means cringe when they hear it. It is being uttered through a microphone that is attached to the head of synchronized swimming coach Chris Carver, making her look as if she's an air-traffic controlleror possibly Madonna at Shoreline Amphitheater doing her soundcheck. A soundcheck that is not going all that well, to be exact. Carver is standing in the covered stands, staring down at nine synchronized swimmers. They are floating abjectly in the diving well, waiting to be commanded into various intricate shapes and formations. She is in the midst of inventing new routines for the Santa Clara Aquamaids' yearly synchronized swimming extravaganza, set to take place in this arena Sept. 11-13. Carver is a pleasant-looking woman dressed casually in shorts and T-shirt, but her position in this organization seems to be one of complete authority and domination.

Rome, the original choice for 1908, had gone into a suitable panic following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, so London stepped in to host the event, bringing some brand new sea toys along for the party. There were three categories - the eight-metre, 60-foot and open class - and average speeds were almost funereal, hovering around the underwhelming 19mph mark. To make matters even less appealing, virtually no one could see the action, which took place off Southampton. Lousy British weather meant six out of the nine scheduled races were cancelled. A first-rate flop all round, then, and never to be repeated.
