ABOUT SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
HISTORY
It started as a male sport, with the earliest recorded competition in 1890 in Berlin. It has persevered under a myriad of names, including artistic, ornamental, scientific, figure or pattern swimming, as well as water ballet. By the turn of the century, though, women had come to the fore of synchronized swimming. A champion Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman delighted audiences with dances performed in a glass tank of water in New York in 1907. Interest began to build. In 1924 in Montreal, the world's first provincial championship was held. The first champion, Peg Seller, became an important pioneer for the fledgling sport, and from there it spread to the US, where it soon flourished in amateur swimming clubs nationwide. Chicago later emerged as the hub of the sport's development, beginning with a stunning display at the 1934 World's Fair. Diver and former gymnast Katherine Curtis trained 60 swimmers, known as The Modern Mermaids, in a series of moves that gave birth to the term "synchronized swimming." It's international popularity soared further when swimmer Esther Williams performed in a string of MGM "aqua musicals" in the 1940s and '50s. By then a contracted star at MGM, she starred in several films, known as "aqua musicals," centered around synchronized swimming. One of the biggest, Million Dollar Mermaid, was an affectionate portrait of Annette Kellerman.

History
The great Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman, planted the first seed of what was to become synchronized swimming when she performed "water ballet" in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome in 1907. Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating.

Synchronized swimming
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A hybrid of swimming gymnastics , and ballet synchronized swimming involves competitors (either individuals or teams) performing aesthetically pleasing and difficult movements while holding their breath and keeping afloat in water. Synchronized swimming is an Olympic sport open to women since 1984, but not open to men, which combines the qualities of gymnastics and ice dance , but is performed in an extremely difficult and challenging medium. There is an organization called USA Synchro that allows men to compete along with the women. Competitors point to the strength, flexibility, and endurance required to perform difficult routines. edit
Competition Preparation
Competitors when performing routines will typically wear a noseclip . Hair is worn in a bun high on the head and held in place with Knox gelatin . Routines typically last two to four and a half minutes, in either solos, duets, trios, or teams. Swimmers are synchronized both to each other and to the music. Only duets and teams may compete at the Olympic Games. During a routine swimmers cannot use the bottom of the pool for support, but rather depend on sculling motions to keep afloat. How Did Synchronized Swimming Become an Olympic Sport?
Emily Yoffe

Or for that matter this year's addition to the Olympic canon, its cousin, synchronized diving? There are three ways an activity can come into the Olympics: as a completely new sport; as a discipline, a branch of an existing sport; or as an event, a competition within a discipline. Triathlon is making its Olympic debut as a sport in Sydney; trampoline, which is part of gymnastics, is a new discipline; and women's pole vaulting the latest track and field event. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate') The first step to becoming a recognized sport of the Summer Games requires being organized into an international federation and having male participants in at least 75 countries on four continents and female participants in at least 40 countries on three continents. Once the International Olympic Committee votes to recognize a federation, the next step becomes a matter of lobbying. This is supposed to be done without the help of that now-banned Olympic activity, bribery. The IOC now recognizes 31 federations in everything from bridge to korfball (it is beyond Explainer's capacity to explain korfball Since the IOC wants to keep the number of athletes to the current 10,000 (!), it also helps if a sport has telegenic participants, which may be why triathlon made it from recognized international federation to medal sport in a swift 11 years, and bowling, recognized since 1979, languishes. (Their new Olympic marketing campaign slogan: "Strike Gold.")

They called their invention "ornamental and scientific swimming;" we know it as synchronized swimming. It was a Canadian idea, developed by three Montreal women who recognized that not everyone interested in competitive aquatics cared for speed swimming. It is also one of the few sports developed by women, for women. Peg Seller Herstory 1977) was instrumental in encouraging the development of synchronized swimming, writing the rules for international competition and lobbying to have it recognized as an Olympic event. Canadian women have excelled at the sport: most recently, Herstory 1995) won a gold medal despite personal tragedy and errors by the Olympic judges.

Facts
In 1992, the International Olympic Committee, responding to requests from the synchro community, replaced solo and duet with the team event for 1996. Back by popular demand, the IOC reinstated duets to the Olympic program for the 2000 Olympic Games.
After almost 40 years of concerted effort, synchronized swimming was included in the Olympic Games in 1984, with the United States winning the first solo and duet gold medals.

Synchronized swimming events consist of one of three scoring formats: Figures, technical and free routines.

http://library.thinkquest.org/J002862/swimming.htm
The History
Synchronized swimming was developed from water ballet. In 1939 the first Synchronized Swimming contest was held. It was between Wright Junior College and the Chicago Teacher's College. The Amateur Athletic Union of the U.S. found out about the sport of Synchronized Swimming in 1941. Then in 1955 in Mexico City the sport became an event in the Pan American Games. The first time it was in the Olympic games was in 1984 in Los Angeles.
The Sport
In synchronized swimming, the athletes that are competing do dance moves in the water that have been choreographed to music. The people that are competing have to have good body strength and grace. A team consists of 8 members. There is also a solo and a duet competition version of the sport. The swimmers are graded on their performance by a panel of judges on a scale from to 10. The score is based on the accuracy, the timing, height, stability, and control over the figures they make. During the routine the swimmers have to do a list of elements, a combination of figures, and different swimming strokes. They have to be in a special order. There is also a time when the swimmers get to create their own strokes and figures.
In the Olympics Three events are currently recognized internationally in synchronized swimming: solo, duet and team (eight swimmers). The competitive rules and manner of judging are similar to such sports as figure skating and gymnastics. In the 1996 Olympics, the team event replaced solo and duet competition, which had been a part of the Olympic program since 1984. However, duets will be reintroduced for the 2000 Olympic Games.

Format: Swimmers have to hold their breaths for long periods, with up to 60 percent of their routine performed underwater. Synchronized swimming consists of technical and free routine competitions, accounting for 35 percent and 65 percent of the final score, respectively. For the technical portion, swimmers perform specified moves, which include twirls, thrusts, boosts and rockets, without touching the bottom of the pool. Judges look for height, synchronization and degree of difficulty. Equipment: Nose guards to keep out water, gel to keep hair in place and underwater speakers to hear the music.

Countless dreams have been ignited while watching the world's best athletes compete in the Olympic Games. Boys and girls, inspired by personal sports heroes, begin to train and pursue their own paths to the medals podium. During the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, while many youngsters were being motivated to start out on their own journey to elite competition, one comeback athlete was unknowingly inspiring another to return to the sport she left a decade earlier. In 1975, at the age of seven, Tracy Long became a synchronized swimmer, competing first in her native Richmond, Va., and then moving to Walnut Creek, Calif., where the then-16-year-old continued to train and excel. During the years Long competed with the Walnut Creek squad, they won five of six national titles. In 1985-86, she was a member of the U.S. National second team and moved up to the first team in 1987-89. There were victories at the 1987 Pan American Games and the 1987 Worlds before she won four titles (team, solo, duet and figures) at the 1989 Worlds. However, the following year's results were less than stellar and Long decided it was time to get out of the pool.

Synchronized Swimming Annette Kellerman loved to swim. She swam for fun, and then she swam in competitions. She enjoyed entertaining the crowds at those swimming competitions, and that led to her interest in synchronized swimming.
You may never have heard of Annette Kellerman. Many people haven't, even though she was once famous both for her swimming and for starring in Hollywood movies.
In the early 1900's, Annette was one of the few swimmers who specialized in synchronized swimming, or "water ballet" as it was called then. In synchronized swimming, the swimmers perform a choreographed routine to dance music. It is much like a dance performance, except that the whole routine is performed in the water. Much of the time, the swimmer is under water, and often upside down.
Synchronized swimmers try to make their routines look graceful and effortless, but they need a lot of athletic skill and practice to make their routines look that way. Synchronized swimmers must be strong. They need a lot of endurance and flexibility. They need to learn great breath control too, since they are often underwater for a minute or longer.

Origins

While there is evidence of swimmers performing ballet-like manoeuvres in the water in ancient times, the origin of synchronized swimming as an organized, competitive sport dates to earlier this century. In the 1920s, a group of Canadian women, led by national calibre water polo player and diver Margaret Sellers, developed what they called "ornamental swimming" from life saving and swimming techniques. Over the next 20 years the sport grew, music was added to the routines and the name changed to "synchronized swimming". Canadians have continued to be leaders in developing the sport. Since 1973, when the first world championships were held, Canadian swimmers have won medals at every major international competition.
The Sport
Synchronized swimmers perform a series of rhythmic interpretations of specific movements on or under the water, marked by a panel of judges. Each team of eight swimmers performs a technical routine between 2:50 and 3:00 long, and a free routine between 4:45 and 5:15 long. The technical routine must include seven prescribed elements. Free routines are choreographed and swimmers' movements are expected to be synchronized with the music and with other swimmers.
Technical merit and artistic impression marks are given for each routine. The highest and lowest marks are discarded, and the remaining marks are averaged. The technical merit mark is then multiplied by six and the artistic impression mark multiplied by four to arrive at a total mark for that routine. The mark for the technical routine counts for 35% of the final score and the free routine counts for 65%.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING: Huskies' arms are open to new member but their noses stay plugged Paul Dudley
Daily Staff
To understand the Husky Synchronized Swim Club, you have to look below the surface. On the top, all you see are shiny swim suits, headpieces, nose clips, slick hair, arms, legs and music. But underneath, synchronized swimming is a lot of hard work and dedication, long hours in the pool, creativity, accomplishment and athletic ability. The only thing the 11-member Husky Synchronized Swim Club (HSSC) is short on is recognition. It's hard enough to find someone on campus who knows the UW even has a synchronized swimming club, let alone someone who knows what the sport is about. Although synchronized swimming is an Olympic sport, the participants labor in obscurity. What little press the sport receives is often satirical. Saturday Night Live did a spoof on synchronized swimming - one that cut on the sport. The skit focused on a pair of Olympic hopefuls, one of whom couldn't swim and had to use inflatable water wings to stay afloat. But the Huskies took it in stride and UW swimmer Grace Holms appreciated the skit. In the world of synchronized swimming, any press is good press.
