Collier: Olympic sports to erase
Sunday, July 17, 2005 By Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
You may have noted that baseball and softball have gotten themselves thrown out of the Olympics beginning in 2012, which is good, but the International Olympic Committee, with its customary smug restraint, stopped at only two ejections. Too bad. Here are five more "sports" that are way more erasable and should have gotten a similar defenestration: water polo, shooting, synchronized swimming, fencing and badminton. Maybe if the Olympics started lopping off seven sports at a time, we could eventually get to a place where the Olympics are close enough to killing themselves to spark a reasonable discussion about whether that would be a bad thing. Though nothing formal was forthcoming in the way of reasoning from the IOC on the baseball-softball killing, committee members said publicly that baseball in particular had a credibility problem due to steroid use. That's very close to comical.

Steadily gaining popularity throughout the 1940s and 50s, it was a made a demonstration sport in 1948 and kept that status through five straight Olympic games.
    Did You Know?
There are stereo speakers in the walls of the pool where the synchronized swimming event will be held so the competitors can hear the music while below the water's surface.
In both the duet and team competitions, swimmers will perform routines that consist of boosts, twirls, kicks and spins which mirror the actions of their teammates above and below the water surface. During a technical routine swimmers may choose their own musical accompaniment but must perform specific moves in a set order. Technical routines must be completed in less than three minutes. In a free routine swimmers select their own music and choreography. The object is to do a flawless routine that combines difficult maneuvers and creativity. This routine has a four-minute time limit in the duet competition and five-minute limit in the team competition.

Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate')

Russia succeeds U.S. as sync swimming winners
Latest: Sunday October 08, 2000 05:47 PM Robyn Beck/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) - Russia captured the gold medal in the synchronized swimming team competition on Friday by scoring 99.146 out of a possible 100 points. Japan won the silver with 98.860, and Canada took bronze with 97.357. The United States, meanwhile, did not capture a medal for the first time since synchronized swimming became an Olympic sport in 1984. Using a witch-themed routine, the Russians earned two perfect 10s for technical marks and two 10s for artistic impression for a variety of pattern changes, lifts and throws. The team gold goes along with the duet gold Russia won three days earlier. "We wanted to make it very visual, including the swimsuits and hairstyles," said Maria Kisseleva, who, along with Olga Brusnikina, won the duet gold. "I believe it was a masterpiece. If it was not a masterpiece, we would not have won gold.

Qualifying for an Olympic Team is a dream that many people in the world see every time they close their eyes. When, after years of hard work and sacrifice, the Olympic Trials finally come, it can be a very tense situation. In many circumstances best friends compete against one another for just one spot on a Team. This time of year we are hearing stories about athletes that have made the Olympic team, but there are also those that just miss the opportunity. Dreams are being made, and they are also being let go. Unfortunately, only a few of this countries' most talented athletes are able to take part in the Olympic Games. In my own experience, I have seen amazing shows of sportsmanship from athletes that just miss the Team. I think it is the epitome of excellence when a runner-up congratulates the winner of a competition. That is what sport can teach us - sport it is not just physical achievement, but we learn emotional strength and maturity. The two athletes that narrowly missed our Olympic Team in 1996 were examples for all of us. Their exceptional character and sportsmanship will long be remembered.

It is common knowledge that young girls and women can struggle with eating disorders, due in part to being subjected to pressures that can lead to these psychological and medical conditions. Sports like gymnastics and synchronized swimming can enhance pressure on young athletes to be slim using unhealthy means. Athletes in judged sports are subject to the highest degree of scrutiny, and this can lead quite easily to problems associated with their weight. Coaches and parents should be extremely careful when addressing such issues with young athletes, and should get informed about the best way to educate athletes on proper nutrition and health. The USA Synchro office has several materials (and contact information) on their website from a clinical sports psychologist, Dr. Lisa Franseen

The great Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman, planted the first seed of what was to become synchronized swimming when she performed "water ballet" in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome in 1907. Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating.

Rollerskating ballroom dancing (also known as dancesport) and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games . You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding as new events to future Olympic competitions
Olympic Events - Too Many Dumb Ones
There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics . They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events ? These are not sporting events, these are ways of killing people. The same goes for synchronized swimming , which you'll be seeing at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece . If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport. What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's Bodybuilding actually defined as a circus act or a freak show) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies, rather than sports.
