ANCIENT ORIGINS MEN WERE FIRST WITH NOSE CLIP AND SYNCHRONICITY
T he haunt of nose clips, glitter, hair gel, make-up, beaming smiles and legs worthy of the catwalk, synchronised swimming, for women only, has endured much taunting and teasing over the years. Yet the protagonists are capable of holding their breath while performing their sport for long periods of time and count themselves among those at the Games with the most efficient cardio-vascular systems. Now confined to the fairer sex, synchronised swimming began with men in the 19th century, when it was known by various names including water ballet, figure swimming and ornamental swimming. Male actors staged the first recorded synchronised swimming contest in Berlin in 1891. Anette Kellerman, an Australian swimmer, stole the men's thunder, however, when she performed in a glass tank in New York in 1907. Ever since, synchro has been synonymous with women.

Rome, the original choice for 1908, had gone into a suitable panic following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, so London stepped in to host the event, bringing some brand new sea toys along for the party. There were three categories - the eight-metre, 60-foot and open class - and average speeds were almost funereal, hovering around the underwhelming 19mph mark. To make matters even less appealing, virtually no one could see the action, which took place off Southampton. Lousy British weather meant six out of the nine scheduled races were cancelled. A first-rate flop all round, then, and never to be repeated.

Boys in the water - Czech male synchronized swimmers dream of Olympic glory
[12-05-2005] By Jaroslava Halkova Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s Synchronized swimming used to be a female sport only. Thin, fit, sporty girls disappear under water only to reappear with the next loud beat and spin with the tips of their toes pointing to the heavens. It's an impressive and tough sport - gymnastics in water. Just a few years ago the idea of a male team of synchronized swimmers would have caused a good few smirks, but today they have their very own international championship. It doesn't yet have hard-and-fast rules and only very few teams take part, but one of them is from the Czech Republic. The Czech team, calling themselves "Krasoplavci" - which roughly translates as figure or beauty swimmers are the first and so far the only team here.

Never beaten in FINA competition 1993-1997. Becky Dyroen-Lancer may very well be the most dominant synchronized swimmer of all time. She is certainly one of the most decorated synchronized swimmers in history. Through hard work, concentration, and faith in God, she rose from an age group swimmer to World and Olympic Champion. At age five, doctors repaired a hole in Becky’s heart. But it did not stop her, and at age nine, the San Jose, California native splashed into a sport in which she was to reign for many years. She was a Santa Clara Aquamaid from the beginning and with Coach Chris Carver she never looked back. She became a national team member in 1988, and just three years later she began to stamp her mark in synchronized swimming history. At the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Becky won as solo champion. She was solo, duet and team champion at the French Open and team champion at the V FINA World Cup, Mallorca Open, and at the Perth World Championships. In 1992, she was the silver medalist at the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Olympic Trials, and gold medalist at the Swiss Open in solo, duet, team and figures.

The university's participation in the Olympics dates back to 1904, when Emil Breitkreutz became the first USC student to compete in the Olympic Games and brought home a bronze medal in the 800 meters. Two Olympiads later, in 1912, the same year Los Angeles Times columnist Owen Bird nicknamed USC's athletic teams the Trojans, USC freshman Fred Kelly won the university's first gold medal, for the 110-meter high hurdles, and launched an unprecedented winning streak for USC. At least one USC athlete has come home with a gold medal in virtually every Olympiad since, and USC claims more Olympians than any other university in the country.
