In Athens, I was a member of an international team in Press Operations at Aquatics. Swimming has been on the Olympic Games programme since the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Currently Aquatics at the Olympics consist of a variety of pool competitions, water polo, synchronized swimming, and diving competitions. The Olympic Aquatic Centre, was located at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Maroussi between the Olympic Stadium and the Velodrome. Some of the 300 media work stations in Press Operations at Aquatics. My ticket On Sunday August 8th, six days before the Opening Ceremonies, the members of Press Operations attended a dress rehearsal that covered most of the ceremony. The part that was omitted was how the Olympic flame would be lit. Entering the Olympic complex security was extremely tight to ensure that no one of the audience brought a camera or cell phone into the stadium and captured images of the rehearsal. After viewing the rehearsal in the flesh and then watching it live on television, there was no comparison. While it was an extremely impressive show on television it could project the dynamics of being seated in the stadium. As the audience left grounds at the security gates the media were conducting interviews to find out about the ceremony.

Club History In 1969, Elizabeth Gray and Joyce Corner responded to an ad looking for coaches for a new synchronized swimming program beginning at Huron Park Pool in Mississauga. They started the program using only one lane and sharing the pool with a Red Cross Leader's course. Over the years, the enthusiasm of the group grew and the programs expanded. Currently, Elizabeth Gray still lives in Mississauga and enjoys recreational synchro, and Joyce Corner is an international synchro judge and Masters swimmer (visit http://www.synchroontario.com/Masters.htm to see a picture of her with her team-mates from the New Wave Synchro Masters). By the mid 70's, under Head Coach Roberta Ammariti, MSSA had a strong recreational base as well as a team that placed sixth in the nation competition. In addition, Lisa Alexander , Olympic Silver medalist for team synchro in the 1996 Olympic Games, was a part of the recreational and pre-competitive programs with MSSA. With the construction of the Etobicoke Olympium and the founding of its synchro club, Mississauga returned to a recreational program until 1988 when the next Head Coach, Shauna Press, started a Provincial Competitive program. In 1991, the club added a National Team, and in 1992 took over running the Parks and Recreation Synchronized Swimming program for the City of Mississauga. This program is now known as the MSSA Satellite program.

Lila has a sophomore daughter, Ashley, who is also in the program. Lila would like everyone to know that Des Moines is rich with synchro heritage. "We have the oldest synchronized swimming program in the nation, right here in Des Moines." The legendary synchro teacher and author, Theresa Anderson, was actually from Des Moines. Mrs. Stafford recalls taking synchro lessons from her. "Those were scary but invaluable times! You did what Theresa asked or she'd hit your legs with a yard stick as you performed a figure." Coach Stafford has been swimming, competing or teaching synchronized swimming for the past 43 years. Starting at age 6, Lila participated in summer country club competitions and went on to participate in the Des Moines Roosevelt Sharks Club, Iowa's oldest synchronized swimming club. After high school, Mrs. Stafford swam for Gulf Park Women's College synchro club where they performed all along the Gulf Coast. Transferring to the University of Iowa as a Junior, Lila joined the Hawkeye's synchro team called the Seals Club. Synchronized swimming seems to run in Mrs. Stafford's family, for both of her older sister's were members of the Sharks and Seals Club as well. Synchro was always apart of their family activities. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games The Nemean Games The Isthmian Games The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.

Athletes should be able to hold the split position up-side-down in the water, flat on the surface. This is much different than on land, because it is the athlete's own strength and flexibility that hold the legs in the split position; you are not able to take advantage of gravity. An athlete from England sent me an email requesting information on how to improve her splits. I sent this athlete some ideas on how to improve split flexibility, and thought it would be interesting to post on my website as well. Keep in mind that there are many different drills that can be done to improve flexibility; these are just a few basic exercises. In addition, athletes should also keep stretching their hamstrings to keep flexible enough to do the splits. I think the goal is to strengthen your hip flexors and thighs so they can pull your legs into the splits in the water. drill in the water: 1) get into the splits up-side-down, holding some kind of jug filled with air on your feet/ankles. pull your legs towards the bottom of the pool using your own strength (make sure to keep your knees tight). the air jugs will want to pull your feet/legs towards the sky, but you will resist and pull them down into the water in the split position. as for the type of jug to use - we went to a camping supply store and found plastic jugs used to store water, then blew them up with air. they have a handle on them so we put our toes between the handle. we used ones like this: http://www.avidoutdoors.com/col5galexwat.html

Glossary of Terms Back in the late 19th century, synchronized swimming was known under different names such as artistic, ornamental, scientific, figure or pattern swimming as well as water ballet, and the first "artistic swimmers" were male actors who staged dancing displays in water as a form of entertainment. The first record of competition was a men's event in Berlin in 1891. But by the turn of the century, women had moved toward the forefront of synchronized swimming. The origins of synchronized swimming as we know it today are rooted in the swimming safety courses at the Royal Life Saving Society. In 1924, a group of Canadian women, led by national-calibre water polo player and diver Margaret "Peg" Seller, developed what they called "ornamental swimming" from lifesaving and swimming techniques. Within a year, rules were established and the first competitions were organized. The world 's first provincial championship was held in Montreal where Seller was crowned champion. From that point, synchronized swimming's popularity continued to grow, especially in the United States. International competitions would soon follow. Synchro was a demonstration sport at the 1951 Pan American Games in Buenos Aires and at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. FINA, the international federation for aquatic sports embraced synchro in 1954. It was featured at the inaugural World Swimming Championships in 1973 in Belgrade and was accepted into the official Olympic program as a woman's event in 1984.
