THE SPORTS History of Swimming Content by Andrew Oon The English are considered the first modern society to develop swimming as a sport. By 1837, regular swimming competitions were being held in London's six artificial pools, organized by the National Swimming Society in England. As the sport grew in popularity many more pools were built, and when a new governing body, the Amateur Swimming Association of Great Britain, was organized in 1880, it numbered more than 300 member clubs. In 1896, swimming became an Olympic sport for men with the 100 metres and 1500 metres freestyle competitions held in open water. Soon after, as swimming gained popularity, more freestyle events were added, followed by the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and finally, the individual medley. Stroke Development Although people have swum since ancient times, swimming strokes have been greatly refined in the past 100 years. Competitive swimming, most notably the modern Olympic Games, begun in Athens, Greece, in 1896 increased interest in strokes. Scientific stroke analysis has helped produce more varied strokes, greater speeds, and a better understanding of propulsion through the water. Competitive Swimming As swimmers refine strokes or make changes, the best way to see if the new stroke is an improvement is to use it in competition. This is why so much attention is paid to speed and endurance records.

Aquatics Water Polo Women’s water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football player’s skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby player’s strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the women’s division, while twelve teams compete in the men’s division at the Olympic Games.

Originally called the Mermettes, it first existed in the form of a kinesiology class beginning in 1952. It continued as a class and as a club until it lapsed in 1987. We are sadly lacking in information about what went on prior to 1995. Last year we gave a shortened version of what we at the present time knew of the history of Mermettes. Also, last year the college kindly gave us new mailing labels for all the alums they had identified as previous Mermettes. We hoped to have each send us a history of experiences with the club. The enclosed picture above is from the show done March 3, 1953. Thank you to Susan Rosar Sheehan for the copy of this picture featured in the Richmond Times Leader newspaper.
