History and Government
History: The history of Switzerland has followed a broadly different course from that of its European neighbours, mainly because no ruler since the 14th century was able to claim more than a theoretical suzerainty over the small, well-organised and prosperous group of cantons that comprise it. In the period between 1315 and 1388, they inflicted a series of crushing defeats on the armies of the Dukes of Austria, resulting in several other cantons joining the original three in the Swiss Confederation. Their location left them well placed to interfere in the interminable power struggles of the period, and their influence was backed up by the formidable reputation of their army – probably the most powerful in Europe at the end of the 15th century. The Reformation led to a division in Swiss society between the followers of the reformer Zwingli (later, Calvin) and the Catholics. The bitter controversy considerably reduced Swiss influence in Europe and the Confederation was lucky to survive a series of defeats. Swiss independence from the Holy Roman Empire was one of the results of the Peace of Westphalia (1648) that concluded the Thirty Years’ War, in which Switzerland had suffered badly. In the following 100 years, little progress was made towards a formal union of the cantons and the religious controversy rumbled on; the dominance of the Protestants was not established until after the Second Villmergen War in 1712.

82. FRONTLINE: Switzerland: The Train

var loc = "../../../"; A report on the evidence and the questions that remain.
By David Marks, Associate Producer, BBC/FRONTLINE When we started research for our documentary "Nazi Gold," we knew that the emotionally-charged issue of Holocaust survivors' claims against Swiss banks was triggering a re-examination of Switzerland's relations with Nazi Germany. New accounts of witnesses and survivors, and information from recently declassified documents in the United States and Switzerland, contradicted the previously-accepted historical record. From Switzerland's close trade and banking relations with Berlin, to its controversial and tragic refugee policy, to certain officials' post-war support for Nazis in their escape to South America, wartime Switzerland appears to many observers to have been less than neutral in World War II. But there is one story we examined the forced transports of Italians through Switzerland via the St. Gotthard mountain passage which represents a dramatic new allegation about Switzerland's wartime role. We tracked down a woman able to describe in detail an incident that since 1943 had been discussed only behind closed doors within Zurich's Jewish community. Initially, this woman - whom we call 'Elizabeth' - had contacted a Holocaust survivor who had written about Switzerland's role in the war. She described to him how, as a teenager in Zurich, she assisted in giving humanitarian aid to people in cattle trains headed to Germany. We eventually established communication with 'Elizabeth' directly and gained her trust. She asked that we guarantee her privacy before giving an interview. Her husband confirmed that this was a story she had told him for the first time over 40 years ago. She is an intelligent, kind and cheerful woman with no motive for telling her story except a desire to put on record what she witnessed.

Tourism
The tourism industry is a leading source of foreign exchange and employment in Switzerland. Tourism has been important in Switzerland since the Enlightenment , when writers, artists, and scientists found inspiration in the majestic pinnacles of the Alps. Picturesque lakeside towns, including Interlaken, Lausanne, Lucerne, Montreux, and Vevey, were the initial centers of the Swiss tourism industry. In the 19th century, during the early era of mountain climbing , foreign adventurers flocked to high-altitude towns, such as Zermatt.

    E-government standards approved in Switzerland
    eGovernment News – 15 June 2004 – Switzerland – Interoperability
The eCH association, a body working towards the setting of e-government standards in Switzerland, has adopted version 1.1 of SAGA.ch as the norm for Swiss e-government. SAGA.ch – “ Standards and Architectures for e-Government-Applications in Switzerland” – contains technical directives and standards for the development of e-government in the country. The directives and standards aim at ensuring interoperability among the different IT systems of the Swiss public administration, thereby enabling seamless communications and data sharing between all levels of government. This standardisation will also generate savings by reducing overall development costs and dramatically cutting the financial costs associated with non-interoperability of public sector systems. The SAGA.ch standard was approved on 8 July 2004 by eCH, an association that brings together government bodies, businesses and other organisations in order to develop and adopt e-government standards. The standard will also facilitate the exchange of information between Government and private sector organisations.

Formally neutral since just after the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century and informally for about 300 years before that, Switzerland joined the United Nations in September 2002. OVERVIEW
    FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA Although it is situated close to the geographical centre of Europe the country is not an EU member. A referendum in 2001 went against opening talks on joining. Membership of the European Economic Area was also rejected by referendum in 1992 and Swiss-EU relations are now based on an extensive range of bilateral agreements. Ties became closer in June 2005 when a referendum backed membership of the EU Schengen and Dublin agreements. This will bring Switzerland into Europe's passport-free zone and increase cooperation with the EU on crime and asylum issues. A European cultural and linguistic crossroads, about two-thirds of the population speak German, around one-fifth French and about 7% Italian. Rumansch, the country's fourth national language, is spoken by less than 1% of the population.
