The origin of Cultural Diversity in switzerland. The Origins of switzerland sCultural Diversity. switzerland s official title, the Swiss
http://ch.c-d.org/ch/culture_origin.html
The Origins of Switzerland's Cultural Diversity Switzerland's official title, the 'Swiss Confederation' (Latin: Confoederatio Helvetica, or CH for short), indicates that it is a union of individual allies and recalls the fact that Switzerland is not a homogeneous linguistic and cultural community. The Helvetians were among the Celtic tribes who inhabited the region of present-day Switzerland in Roman times, and numerous names of mountains, rivers and places are still reminiscent of the Helvetic and Roman cultures that helped to shape the country. In later times new, younger peoples such as the Burgundians and Alemanni settled in what is now Switzerland. Ethnographically speaking, there is no Swiss people and no homogeneous Swiss nation. Nor can one talk about a Swiss culture, because various cultures came into contact with one another and even today still overlap. Switzerland has remained a mosaic of world and regional history, religions, languages and dialects, all confined in a very small space. The basic principle that holds the country together is a political will to remain culturally independent, and not just a collection of peculiarities in the heart of Europe.

The Swiss Guard Current profile While much of the work of the present day guards is ceremonial, they are responsible for the security at the Apostolic Palace, the papal apartment and the four main entrances to the Vatican. They are also in charge of the pontiff's physical safety when he travels outside the city state. The Swiss Guard, the world's smallest and perhaps most colorful army, has been the chief protectors of the pontiff. Clad in Renaissance helmets and blue, red and yellow tunics (the colors of the Medici family) that are said to have been designed by Michelangelo. For routine work, the guards wear blue uniforms and berets. The Swiss Guard currently consists of a total of 100 men: 4 officials, 1 chaplain, 23 noncommissioned officers, 70 halbardiers, and 2 drummers. The halbard is the traditional weapon carried by Swiss Guards. The members of the Swiss Guard reside in a barrack in Vatican City. They serve for two years, with the possibility of extending the period to a maximum of 25 years. During this period they receive training in self-defence, attend shooting practice, take course in Italian and study the organizational structure of the Vatican. At the end of the first year they must take a very thorough exam. Guard recruits must be Roman Catholic men of Swiss nationality who are single, under 30 years old and stand at least 5-feet, 8-inches tall. Guards need to have completed their initial military training in the Swiss Armed Forces, and obtained a certificate of good conduct from an ecclesiastical and a civil authority.

Switzerland History and Culture
History During the Germanic invasions that swept over the Western Roman Empire in the 4th century AD, the Burgundians and the Alamanni conquered Helvetia. The Protestant Reformation in Switzerland started in 1518, when a country pastor named Huldreich Zwingli began to denounce the sale of indulgences by the Roman Catholic Church. During the 1790s, the French Revolution spread to Switzerland; the French continually intervened in support of Swiss revolutionaries, a group that sought to promote political reforms and the establishment of a strong national government, and in 1798 the revolutionaries occupied all Swiss territory.

of Switzerland
In the 13th century, the Gotthard Pass region in the heart of the Alps became negotiable and rapidly developed into an economically important north-south crossing point. As a result, the valleys of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden at the north foot of the Gotthard massif suddenly became a focal point of European power politics, and this led their inhabitants to found the core of what was to become Switzerland with a pact of mutual assistance.
Today Switzerland is a federal state in Central Europe. It is bordered by Germany, to the north, Austria and the Principality of Liechtenstein, to the east, Italy, to the south and France, to the west.

Heidi Toft is a Norwegian physicist. In 1999 she was an undergraduate student and had a placement at CERN, i.e. The European Laboratory for Particle Physics, located in Genève. She then did this social anthropological field investigation on the Swiss . It is all self experienced: She has, actually, walked all over Switzerland asking Swiss capable of speaking English in the different cultural parts what keeps that country together! Please notice: This page is mainly based on observations of and conversations with Swiss and for a period of basically only one week. Therefore this page cannot be taken as a "truth", only in a humorous way. However, I do believe that the contents of this page are true, only a few times slightly exaggerated.

Observation of growing Tibetan culture in Switzerland By Tenzin Yangdak It was a great comeback to Switzerland, the land of lakes, mountains and meadow, after my four hectic years in Gurupura, Tibetan Settlement, South India. One thing that made me think repeatedly, and also this time, was that often heard in public speech within the Tibetan community in exile, the importance and urgency to cherish and
