Beef and Dairy Cattle, Swine, and Other Animals
Livestock is a multi-million dollar industry in Canada, and it's a key business in our labs, too. The animal research program is concentrated at a few key labs across the country. Studies include livestock nutrition, genetics, pest management, manure management, animal production systems, and animal behavior. The stories below indicate some of the innovations our scientists are making so Canadians can be sure animals are raised humanely in ways that conserve our environment, contribute to a safe food supply, and help provide a sound return on investment for Canada's producers. Research field: animals Our livestock research at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) covers a number of topics, including animal welfare and behaviour, nutrition and health, breeding and genetics, pest and disease control, and manure management. Scientists are sensitive to society's concerns about livestock production. The effects of drug treatments on food products, control of bacteria that can compromise food safety, and the impacts of livestock farming on environmental health are valid issues and worthy of scientific study. Livestock research in our labs aims to address these concerns and, at the same time, to provide workers in the livestock sector with innovations to improve production and animal care. The information, technology and programs provided by this research will help to maintain the competitiveness and ensure the renewal of Canada's livestock industry.

Swine Home Livestock Swine Animal Genetics Collected, Stored To Preserve Long-term Diversity
Although there’s not an imminent danger, some scientists say a widespread disease or bioterrorism attack could wipe out significant portions of the U.S. farm animal population. That's where the National Animal Germplasm Program comes in.
Nutrition for Lean Genetic Swine

Besides proper health care, environment and management, the most critical factor in producing leaner, more muscular hogs is proper nutrition.
Adding Phytase Proves Positive for Poultry, Swine Diet

Phytate is a compound found in many common feed ingredients that decreases nutrient availability in animal diets. The main anti-nutritional effect of phytate is that it makes phytate phosphorus unavailable for digestion and absorption by nonruminants such as swine and poultry. Phytate also has negative effects on digestive enzymes, trace minerals, calcium, protein and amino acids, and carbohydrates.
Effects of Palatability on Feed Consumption in Growing Swine

When purchasing show pigs, one of the most important things is to get the pig on feed as soon as possible. A feed that is very palatable will tickle the pig’s taste buds and have it eating immediately. Highly palatable feeds also have value in the commercial swine industry.

Today that tradition lives on, and Texas remains the livestock capital of the world. It is a well-earned reputation, thanks to Texas livestock producers who apply dedication and expertise into making Texas the leader in livestock production. Livestock buyers seeking quality, variety and abundance need look no further than Texas. No other state offers a better selection of purebred or commercial livestock. Texas is the nation's No. 1 producer of beef cattle, horses, sheep and goats. Texas dairy cattle producers have also become prominent in the replacement heifer market, and Texas swine remain an important part of U.S. swine production. Just as important, Texas has the resources to bring livestock buyers and sellers together and to facilitate the export of livestock and premium livestock genetics to destinations across the globe. The decrease in number and size of swine operations in Arkansas depicts the change in the swine industry from small and medium sized independents to large contract swine operations. Current estimates indicate 90 to 95 percent or more of the swine in Arkansas are grown under contract. The contracting company supplies the hogs, feed, fieldmen for herd health and production management and a market for the hogs. Major work with swine has involved providing Extension agents and independent operators with information on health, feed ingredients, ration formulation and facilities. Extension assists the Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation with policy development, the Arkansas Department of Corrections with their swine program and the Arkansas State Fair with swine shows. The Swine Production in Arkansas publication covers most aspects of swine production and is suitable for small and beginning operators. Swine Husbandry
In swine husbandry, flies can be a particularly serious problem in modern pig houses.
