How Did Synchronized Swimming Become an Olympic Sport?
Emily Yoffe
Posted Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at 3:25 PM PT
Or for that matter this year's addition to the Olympic canon, its cousin, synchronized diving? There are three ways an activity can come into the Olympics: as a completely new sport; as a discipline, a branch of an existing sport; or as an event, a competition within a discipline. Triathlon is making its Olympic debut as a sport in Sydney; trampoline, which is part of gymnastics, is a new discipline; and women's pole vaulting the latest track and field event. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate') The first step to becoming a recognized sport of the Summer Games requires being organized into an international federation and having male participants in at least 75 countries on four continents and female participants in at least 40 countries on three continents. Once the International Olympic Committee votes to recognize a federation, the next step becomes a matter of lobbying. This is supposed to be done without the help of that now-banned Olympic activity, bribery. The IOC now recognizes 31 federations in everything from bridge to korfball (it is beyond Explainer's capacity to explain korfball Since the IOC wants to keep the number of athletes to the current 10,000 (!), it also helps if a sport has telegenic participants, which may be why triathlon made it from recognized international federation to medal sport in a swift 11 years, and bowling, recognized since 1979, languishes. (Their new Olympic marketing campaign slogan: "Strike Gold.")

Swimming: Olympic champ Hu racks up more diving gold for China
MONTREAL : Olympic champion Hu Jia won the men's 10m platform, boosting China's gold tally as silver medallist Jose Antonio Guerra gave Cuba its first medal ever at a World Swimming Championships. Guerra, helped a little by Hu's lapse in concentration, had snatched the lead on the penultimate dive of the six-dive final, but he couldn't hang on for the win. He took the silver ahead of Russian Gleb Galperin, who jumped three places on the final dive to earn the bronze.

Nolden confident she will keep position By JIM MORRIS The Canadian Press Although her appointment as a coach for Canadian Olympic swim team has been voided, Shauna Nolden is confident she'll be returned to the position when a new selection committee makes its decision.
"I was very willing to go through a selection process and have offered to do this for a number of weeks," Nolden said in an e-mail to The Canadian Press.
"I am very confident in the original appointment and believe my attributes will benefit the team. . . . We want to get through the politics of this . . . and focus on what is important, which is getting the swimmers to perform."
Nolden's appointment as the first woman to help coach a Canadian Olympic swim team was voided this week by Swimming Canada in a move to avoid a long and costly hearing into allegations her selection was arbitrary and biased.

MONTREAL (CP) - It was during the dark days after Athens that Brittany Reimer learned a lot about herself. When she struggled at the 2004 Summer Olympics some people questioned if Reimer would become a swimming star or flame out like a streaking meteorite. Reimer provided some answers by winning a bronze medal in the gruelling 1,500-metre freestyle at the world aquatic championships Tuesday night. "You have to go down usually before you can come up," said the Surrey, B.C., teenager, sounding older than her 17 years. "Athens was a big step for me.
