Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate')

Students tune in for favorite Olympic sports
By Carrie Lewis Published: Monday, August 23, 2004 Every four years, the summer Olympics seem to gain more and more popularity. Despite the rush to begin school, most UM-St. Louis students are still finding time to tune in and watch their favorite summer sports. According to the official website of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the first Olympics are believed to have been held in 776 B.C. Emperor Theodosius, who claimed the events were "too pagan," abolished the games in 393 A.D. It was not until 1896 that the Olympics were re-established and Greece held the first modern games. One hundred and eight years later, in 2004, the Olympics once again returned to Athens.

ACC Swimming - Everything is in Flux Posted by: wahooswim81 on Sun Jul 17 2005 7:10:20 PM Message: As there hasn't been a Swimming post in awhile, I thought I would get
one going. What do you "gurus" make of all the coaching changes?
Baron (GT), Thompson (Duke) and Wenhold (Maryland) are out - Stu
Wilson (GT), Dan Colella (Duke), Unnamed (Maryland). There are also
many notable Assistant Coaching changes: Bill Smyth (UVA - new head coach at Boston Univ); Chad Onken (NC State - replaced by Chris Woodard); Pam Swander (Clemson - hired back to Indiana); GT vacancy created by Stu Wilson's promotion; several vacancies on the Maryland staff. I think that these changes reflect the fact that Swimming and Diving are about to have some major changes in the ACC. Look for Duke to become a real factor, GT and Maryland to continue their climb. And FSU is on the cusp of challenging UVA and UNC at the top of both Men and Women.

Remove the ones where winning the olympic medal isn't the high point of your career
[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] link I think you'll find that the other sports you mention (and presumably others inferred) have similar tournament level competition that carries the same level of meaning as your football example (guessing you're referring to World Cup non-US 'football' there) to the competitors. Those events just aren't as news-worthy (sports-worthy?) and have a lower profile than others, but they exist. They compete more than once every four years, you know.

Sabine Boersch, Sports Editor Clan swimmers have been holding their own in the pool with Kathleen Stoody and Trevor Brekke claiming the top spots within the team. However, it is not enough to take medals. As swimmers begin to prepare for Olympic trials this summer, head coach Liam Donnelly has been pushing the team to do better. Despite personal bests, those leading the team are not making the times to take the top spots. "We were really pleased with the time and the result, but we're not satisfied with the placing," said the coach in reference to the shortcomings of Stoody's strong performances. "The bottom line is we need to make further improvements to move forward." Stoody was one of Canada's representatives at the Pan American games this past summer where she captured a silver and a bronze medal. She is hoping to be selected for Canada's Olympic team this summer. "Kathleen needs to knock off some of the swimmers ahead of her if she hopes to make the Olympic team," said Donnelly. Despite swimming her fastest swim at the Canadian national swimming championships, she finished fourth in the Québec City meet finishing behind swimmers from Calgary, Manitoba, and Toronto. Her time of 2:28.56 was three seconds better than her time last year, when she took fifth in the 200-metre breaststroke, but it was a solid three seconds behind Calgary's Lauren Van Oosten who broke the 10-year-old record of 2:25.69.

Chester Wheeler, Director of Sales Sponsor and Licensing, for the UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEEE SportsSPIN: What's the overall licensing picture for the 2004 Olympics? Chester Wheeler Heading into the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, the USOC will continue to expand its licensing business with a variety of products and goods. The 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City offered one of the most successful licensing environments for the USOC and its licensee partners. With official U.S. Olympic Team outfitter, Roots, dressing the U.S. Olympic Team in 2002 and outfitting the team in the Parade uniform through 2008, the USOC has taken a fashion-forward approach to U.S. Olympic apparel. SportsSPIN: The Roots beret was a big success story in Salt Lake City. Chester Wheeler Yes, the Roots beret was by far the single hottest item to come out of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, with more than one million sold. The beret raised awareness of Roots in the U.S. and resulted in a frenzy for anything with the USA Team logo. SportsSPIN: Are similar products being produced for the 2004 Olympic Games?
