The heart of the Games By Yiorgos Gakis The heart of the 2004 Olympic Games is beating at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA), a complex that will host 9 out of 28 events, but also the two Press Centers: one for the Written and one for the Electronic Press. More than 500.000 people - spectators, athletes, officials, Mass Media, staff, volunteers - will be circulating daily within the OAKA spaces. OLYMPIC STADIUM
The Olympic Stadium is situated at Maroussi, a northern suburb of Athens and it is part
of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA). There will be 75,000 spectators who will attend athletics events, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The General Secretariat of Sports has scheduled to complete the Stadium's renovation by the end of 2003. ATHENS 2004 and the Ministry of Culture have asked Santiago Calatrava, the well-known architect, to redesign and upgrade OAKA in an innovative and creative way, including the new roof structure for Olympic Stadium. General Secretariat of Sports (GGS), is responsible for the project by the end of June 2004.

    Collier: Olympic sports to erase
Sunday, July 17, 2005 By Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
You may have noted that baseball and softball have gotten themselves thrown out of the Olympics beginning in 2012, which is good, but the International Olympic Committee, with its customary smug restraint, stopped at only two ejections. Too bad. Here are five more "sports" that are way more erasable and should have gotten a similar defenestration: water polo, shooting, synchronized swimming, fencing and badminton. Maybe if the Olympics started lopping off seven sports at a time, we could eventually get to a place where the Olympics are close enough to killing themselves to spark a reasonable discussion about whether that would be a bad thing. Though nothing formal was forthcoming in the way of reasoning from the IOC on the baseball-softball killing, committee members said publicly that baseball in particular had a credibility problem due to steroid use. That's very close to comical.

Swimming as a discipline went through a number of experimental stages, like the 50 m controlled heating pool, or specially-built conduits that minimise water turbulence, before arriving in its contemporary form as one of the most glamorous events of the Olympic Games. At the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, swimming competitions took place in the yachting marina at Zea (Piraeus). The swimmers got on a boat, and having reached the chilly waters of the Saronic Gulf, they leapt into the sea, swimming towards the finishing line at the Marina Zeas’ shore. From the yachting marina in Zea in 1896, via the river Seine in Paris in 1900,  to the 100 m pool within a running track in 1908, Swimming venues have changed. The 100 m event that began in 1896 exclusively for Greek sailors developed into an underwater obstacle course (1900) and ended up as today’s 32 men’s and women’s events.

Four sports that all happen in water; swimming, water polo, synchronised swimming and diving. In Athens all the aquatic events are taking place in the same venue, the first time this has happened. Some controversy surrounds the aquatics venue though as it hasn't been finished. The builders didn't have time to put a roof over it, so swimmers and spectators will get very warm at the Games. Everyone knows how the swimming works, although swimmers will have to be wary as if they make a single false start in their event they will be disqualified. Diving takes place from a series of high boards, with judges scoring on the difficulty of the dive and the skill of completing it. Synchronised swimming sees pairs or groups of swimmers 'dance' to music. They must complete the complicated moves at the same time to score well. In water polo swimmers try and throw the ball into a goal, a bit like football. Amazingly, players aren't allowed to touch the sides or the bottom of the pool during the game, so they have to keep treading water. Who are the British hopes for Athens?

The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

    Citius Fortius Altius Revisited
With the 2004 Olympics about to begin, I have been thinking about the large number of sports that make up the Olympics. There are too many sports, and a lot of them are stupid. For example, baseball and softball are Olympic sports, and synchronised swimming is ridiculed because it is an art-form rather than a sport. So I have decided to get rid of the stupid sports from the Olympics, and I have decided that removing all sports that do not conform to the Olympic Ideals swifter, stronger, higher is a good place to start. I use these ideals as the basis of removing sports and adding new sports to my Olympic games.
    Sports to Remove
Before I start removing sports from my Olympics, I can simplify the Ideals by removing higher , as it is really similar to swifter. I can now throw out all sports that do not fit the two Ieals. However, this does not leave us many sports, so I will keep all sports that can be used to kill people, so I will rewrite the Ideals to read swifter, stronger deadlier
