A Jewish look at the quest for greatness.
Olympic athletes are captivating world audiences with their competition to see who can run the fastest and jump the highest. So while the Republic of China and the Commonwealth of Australia are racking up medals, I wonder about the "Kingdom of Animals." Consider: Tim Montgomery is the fastest human alive, holding the world record in the 100 meters at 9.78 seconds. That's a peak speed of 26 mph (42 kph). If only he was as well-equipped as the cheetah! High-traction paws and claws, large nostrils and lungs, and powerful, springy bones all help the cheetah to cruise along at an amazing 72 mph (114 kph). Or how about Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps? In a race of 200 meters, a sailfish would blast through the water at 68 mph (108 kph) finishing ahead of Phelps in about one-tenth the time.

Greetings and Happy post-Olympic Games!
This has been a fun and exciting month, mainly due to the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City! Many of us here at the BASOC offices were fortunate enough to attend part of the Games. From pre-Opening Ceremonies to post-Closing Ceremonies, representatives from BASOC and it’s Board of Directors joined the festivities in Utah. The Olympic Games went smoothly and Salt Lake City did an incredible and amazing job during the two weeks. Kudos to them the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee. Special congratulations to Brandi Chastain, Captain of the San Jose CyberRays and two-time Olympian, for her commitment to being a great role model for girls and young women and a community leader. Brandi will receive the Juliette Gordon Low Award, presented by the Girls Scout of Santa Clara County (the highest award given by the council to a leader in the community) on March 20, 2002. Congratulations, Brandi! Best Regards

They firstly made fun of what she wore a couple of years ago at the Oscars (who cares?) then they started joking that if the athletes pulled the globe "cloth" to fast they would yank her off the platform. Then they laughed and giggled like little school children and then it cut to an advert. WTF? I always enjoy the opening ceremony's of the Olympics, (dont ask way) but this was ridiculous. CHeers for the BBC clip. Mon Aug 16 2004 02:14 PM Paul: NEW Both Costas and Couric are annoying.

    Introduction
The fibreglassed surfboard had already made a singular appearance as early as 1950-1951, with actor Peter Lawford's Rochlen board.
In 1955 John ‘Nipper’ Williams surfed a balsa Malibu, bought used in Hawaii, at Manly and i n 1956 Scott Dillon was lent a balsa/fibreglass semi-gun with concave deck to surf at Bondi by Flippy Hoffman.
As was the case with Duke Kahanamoku's impact, it was the performance of the riders that was as impressive as the boards, and subsequent demand for the design outstripped all previous production. Sydney, circa October 1956
The US and/or Hawaiian teams arrive in Sydney and are accomodated at the Army barracks on North Head.
Their Malibu boards and high performance surfing is immediately noted by Sydney surfers.
Gordon Woods arranged to purchase a 9 ft 6” Velzy-Jacobs surfboard from Bob Burnside on departure and to make certain of the deal, travelled to Torquay.
