http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/swimming/swimminghistory.html
OLYMPIC HISTORY Swimming has been part of the Games since the beginning of the modern Olympiad in 1896 but the first two Games were rather quirky aquatic affairs, and exclusively male. The first was a 100 metres (or thereabouts) race between three Greek sailors across the Bay of Zea near Piraeus (not far from a place where cave drawings offer evidence of an ancient sport) that started with the rivals jumping from a rowing boat. The winner was Ioannis Malokinis in 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The second Games, in Paris, involved races up the Seine, one in which obstacles were placed in the way of swimmers and one where the point was to swim the whole distance under water - not much fun for the spectators! Still, at least the races were held with the tide, not against it. That helped John Arthur Jarvis on his way to capturing the 4,000 metres freestyle (an event never seen before or since) in less than an hour - a time many of those who swim for charity these days would be quite proud of.

History of Synchronized Swimming in the U.S.
Australian, Annette Kellerman, performing in a glass tank, attracts national attention at the New York Hippodrome as the first underwater ballerina. Katherine Curtis, student at the University of Wisconsin, experiments with diving actions and stunts in the water. Curtis starts a water ballet club at the University of Chicago. The group executes strokes, "tricks" and floating formations. Sixty of Curtis' swimmers, called the Modern Mermaids, perform in the lagoon at the Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago. The first U.S. competition, held May 27, is a dual meet at Wright Junior College between Wright and the Chicago Teachers' College, Curtis' team...Showman Billy Rose develops an Aquacade for the World's Fair in New York featuring Olympians Eleanor Holm and Johnny Weismeuller. Esther Williams, U.S. freestyle champion and Olympic contender, popularizes water ballet with her performances in the San Francisco World's Fair Aquacade and subsequent MGM movies...The Central Association of the Amateur Athletic Association [AAU] begins competitions in synchronized swimming. The first CAAAU meet is held March 1, 1940 in Wilmette, Illinois. The AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) adopts synchronized swimming as an official competitive sport for duet and team events. Clark Leach of the CAAAU was the first chairman.

Swimwear history - from silk to sharks Around the Academy:
We investigate the history of the swimsuit
It has often been said that the best way for swimmers to optimise their performance is to swim naked. And until the middle of 19th century, that's exactly what most people did! Nowadays of course, that just won't do, but modern swimwear enables its wearers to move through the water just as efficiently. Silky smooth Swimming costumes have been around since the 1800s, but it wasn't until the end of World War II that companies began developing materials designed to increase the swimmer's speed. Wool - far from ideal! At the beginning of the 20th century, most swimming costumes were made of knitted woollen materials - heavy when wet and not exactly a good look! The elite swimmers - including the 1924 British Olympic team - wore outfits made of silk, which was lighter and more comfortable but much more expensive. Rayon - an artificial version of silk - was introduced in the 1930s, but it wasn't until the 1940s that swimwear technology really took off.

History of Swimming
Ancient Times
Written references date back to 2000 B.C. including Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible (Ezekiel 47:5, Acts 27:42, Isaiah 25:11), Beowulf, and other sagas, although the style is never described. There are also many mentions of swimmers in the Vatican, Borgian and Bourbon codices.
The Greeks did not include swimming in the ancient Olympic Games, but practiced the sport, often building swimming pools as part of their baths. One common insult in Greece was to say about somebody that he/she neither knew how to run nor swim. The Etruscans at Tarquinia (Italy) show pictures of swimmers in 600 B.C., and tombs in Greece depict swimmers 500 B.C. The greek Scyllis was taken prisoner on a ship of the Persian king Xerxes I in 480 B.C. After learning about an impending attack on the Greek navy, he stole a knife and jumped overboard. During the night and using a snorkel made from reed, he swam back to the ships and cut them loose. It was also said that the ability to swim saved the Greeks at the Battle of Salamis, while the Persians all drowned when their ships were destroyed. Julius Caesar was also known to be a good swimmer. A series of reliefs from 850 B.C. in the Nimrud Gallery of the British Museum show swimmers, mostly in military context, often using swimming aids.
In Japan swimming was one of the noble skills of the Samurai, and historic records describe swimming competitions in 36 B.C. organized by emperor Suigui (spelling unclear), which are the first known swimming races.

Open water swim history of marathon swimmer Ted Erikson (Lake Michigan/EnglishChannel) and pioneer swimming dog Umbra (Bosporous/Dardanelles).

    BELOW:
On left are more details on Umbra and Ted background and on right (gray bar) links of significance to marathon (over 10 miles, primarily!) solo and professional swims and swimmers....
..Umbra, born about June, 1990 and found six months later as an unclaimed stray, was adopted by Ted Erikson and Diane Richards. Of sleek body and short all black hair, her lineage is unknown, but even as a puppy she exhibited a Labrador's love of water and a Greyhound's love of running. Umbra began swimming tandem with Erikson in Lake Michigan during the summer of 1991, establishing a benchmark of a 32-minute mile. Over the summer of 1992, Umbra decreased her mile time to 28.5 minutes and covered distances up to three miles while pacing Nial Funchion, who went on to complete an English Channel crossing that year. Umbra has pioneered canine swimming with four 'first' records filed with the Guinness Book of World Records * A round trip Peace River crossing in Port Charlotte, Fl on 3/9/94 (2.4 miles,65 min.)
*An open water Lake Michigan swim in Chicago, IL on 7/10/94 (2.7 miles, 72 min.)
