Manhattan Island Swim Journal - 1986-08-20 Basic reason
Training
I started training for real on September 1, a year before my anticipated swim. I think that this was very necessary, I had been doing some training but had our first child in December of 1986 and so I did not have a lot of time for the first year after his birth. That is part of the reason that I did not make an attempt the year after Bob did. It really helped that I had been with Bob through his training and had the opportunity to be on his boat for his successful swim.
I also had never done alternate breathing and had to learn how to do this which I began in September. This was important to reduce the shoulder problem and also important if you would have to swim on one side of the boat or the other. Periodically I would do workouts where I just swam, no counting and no looking at a clock. This was helpful in getting ready for open water swims where you really could not measure distance and you certainly would not be counting anything. I gave myself 4000 yards an hourI am sure that I usually did more than that but figured it was close enough.
The other key was getting big open water swims in. I did 10 swims of 4 or 5 hours before leaving the US and also a 12 hour. The 12 hour was incredible. I started at 5:30 am and swam until 5:30 PM. Water temp 85, air temp hit 100. It was awful and certainly not anything like the Channel. Here is where visualization played an important role. The lake had a 20 ft. bank on one side which I considered the White Cliffs of Dover and at the end I swam up the beach as if reaching France. It was great!

Bob Ogoreuc , the second winningest coach in Slippery Rock University swimming history, has stepped down from his coaching position effective the end of the current season.
Ogoreuc, an assistant professor in SRU's Physical Education and Sport Management Department, will concentrate on his teaching endeavors and will continue work on a national aquatics research project.
A search for Ogoreuc's successor will begin shortly, according to SRU athletic director Paul Lueken . The new coach will be a part-time, non-faculty employee.
Ogoreuc announced his resignation to his team prior to last Saturday's final dual meet, a home duel with Indiana University of Pa. The Rock subsequently lost both the women's and men's meets to Ogoreuc's alma mater.
The announcement came one week after Ogoreuc passed his former mentor, the late

There are many different types of pools in swimming. There is the Olympic size swimming pool, which is 50 meters long. This type of swimming pools is not just for Olympics, it is used during Long Course season in swimming which in the U.S is a three month period where swim meets are all in Olympic size swimming pools. Another type of swimming pools is a 25 yard pool that is used in high school and NCAA competitions and Short Course season. Short Course season is a nine month period where swim meets are held in 25 yard pools. Only in the U.S. is it like this because other countries and International competitions use the metric system, which are only meters and no yards. The last type of competitive swimming pool is not as common. It is a 25 meter pool that, according to the U.S.A. Swimming web site, is used for some international competitions in the winter season.

New Zealand Synchronised Swimming history A compilation by Sue Edwards
In 1952 an American Group performed a display of Synchronised Swimming in Auckland, and during this time the late Sally Franecivic ( nee Batchelor )who was an Auckland Backstroke swimming champion, became interested. Sally joined the Mermaids Swimming Group, and following an audition by the American group, was invited to train with them. While overseas in 1960, Sally trained with the US Synchronised Swimming Team, and perfected a solo routine, then accompanied the US Team on a European tour. Jean Stewart moved to Auckland about 1958, and established a Synchronised Swimming group within the Mt. Roskill Swimming Club - the " Dolphins" One of the first projects here was a water pantomime, " The Ugly Duckling".
The first inter-Centre Synchro competition, organised by the NZASA was held in Tauranga very shortly after this, with teams from Auckland, Taupo, Tauranga Napier and Dunedin competing. In early 1976 Deborah Lye and Sally-Anne Jenkins from Auckland competed in the Australian Synchronised Swimming Championships, and in September of 1976 Sally-Anne and Anne Breekveldt from Auckland were selected by the NZASA , and became the second International representatives when they competed in Solo and Duet at the Pan Pacific Championships in Nagoya, Japan. Sue Edwards was coach/ manager, and also judged at the competition.
