Swimming History WEB LINKS Home Swimming Vocabulary Activities Sources ... Who are we Swimming has been part of the games since the beginning of the modern Olympiad in 1896, but the first two games were rather quirky aquatic affairs and exclusively male. The first was a 100 meters race between three Greek sailors across the Bay of Zea that started with the rivals jumping from rowing boat. The winner was Ioannis Malokins in 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The backstroke was introduced in Paris and breaststroke surfaced as an Olympic stroke in 1908. In 1956 in Melbourne that butterfly was born at the Olympic games. The first indication of the modern race progamme emerged in St. Louis, in 1904. Yet there were still no women, who raced for the first time in the 1912 Games of Stockholm. Swimming soon became one of the glamour events of the Olympic Games. The early glamour of the sport opened up vast opportunities to the likes of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, and who won 1912and 1920 100 meters freestyle titles. Johnny Weissmuller, the American who became the first to swim faster than a minute for 100 meters freestyle. In 1932, Buster Crabbe got his passport to Hollywood in the same way He won the 400 meters freestyle by what he described as the tenth of a second that changed my life.

Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us the origins and roots of swimming facts and information about collegiate swimming and diving The English are considered the first modern society to develop swimming as a sport. By 1837 swimming competitions were being held in London's six artificial pools, these competitions were organized by the National Swimming Society in England. As the sport grew in popularity many more swimming pools were built, and when a new governing body, the Amateur Swimming Association of Great Britain, was organized in 1880, it numbered more than 300 member clubs. In 1896, swimming became an Olympic sport for men with the 100 metres and 1500 metres freestyle competitions held in open water. Soon after, as swimming gained popularity, more freestyle events were includede, followed by the backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and lastly, the individual medley. For a variety of reasons, women were excluded from swimming in the first several Olympic Games. In 1896 and again in 1906, women could not participate because the developer of the modern games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, held firmly to the assumption, common in the Victorian era, that women were too frail to engage in competitive sports. It was only at the 1912 Games when women's swimming made its debut at the prompting of the group that later became known as the International Olympic Committee. The first modern Olympic Games had only four swimming events, three of them freestyle. The second Olympics in Paris in 1900 included three unusual swimming events. One used an obstacle course; another was a test of underwater swimming endurance; the third was a 4,000-metre event, the longest competitive swimming event ever. None of the three was ever used in the Olympics again.

Mark Spitz won a remarkable seven golds at the 1972 Munich Olympics Swimming has been an integral part of the Olympics since 1896, and after athletics is the principle sport on show.
It fills the whole of the first week and invariably gives the Games the perfect platform on which to build on every four years. There are numerous references to swimming in Greek and Roman history and races were held in Japan as early as the 17th century. Byt the 19th century meets became organsied, culminating in a place at the first modern Olympics. In 1896 there were three races open to men - 100m, 500m and 1200m - which were competed for in the sea in the Bay of Zea near Piraeus. DID YOU KNOW? In 1900 an underwater swimming event was held. With obviously limited spectator value it swiftly sank without trace before the next Olympics

Men's Swimming Team History
The Men’s and Women’s Swimming programs are part of a continuing effort to expand the athletic offerings at UTPB which began in 1994. UTPB currently competes in a combined total of 11 men and women’s sports. When it was discussed in 1998 to renovate and re-open the Olympic size outdoor pool at UTPB after a 10 year closure, the one million dollar plus project was to include updates that would make it possible to train a men’s and women’s swim team and host collegiate swimming meets. The renovations were completed in the spring of 2001 and the pool opened to the university and the public in the summer of 2001. In the fall of 2002, the decision was made within the athletic department to add men and women’s swimming to begin in the fall of 2003. Rob Rankin, who was hired in December of 2000 as Director of Student Recreation and Aquatics, served as a consultant for the completion of the pool renovations and then staffed and supervised activities at the newly opened aquatic facility. Rob had many years of previous experience coaching and working in an aquatic environment and was looking forward to the time in which collegiate swimming would be added to the athletic program at UTPB.
