For other uses of Literature, see Literature (disambiguation)
Literature portal Literature is literally "an acquaintance with letters " as in the first sense given in the Oxford English Dictionary (from the Latin littera meaning "an individual written character ( letter )"). The term has generally come to identify a collection of texts . The word "literature" as a common noun can refer to any form of writing, such as essays; "Literature" as a proper noun refers to a whole body of literary work, world-wide or relating to a specific culture. There is often confusion regarding the actual definition of literature and Literature. The word "literature" can be both singular and plural, likewise with "Literature". This being said, "literatures" is also plural. However "Literature", with emphasis on uppercase L, is a subset of the more general "literature". "Literature" refers to written work of exceptional intellectual calibre, whereas "literature" can be anything written. Accordingly, War and Peace by Tolstoy is "Literature" (singular) as well as "literature" (singular), while

Topics dealt with will be: Germanic traditions and myths; the concept of the Empire (Reich) and the German nation; emergence of a Swiss and Austrian identity; the impact of Lutheran Reformation; war and peace; emergence of the German nationalistic opera with Wagner. http://ateg.org/conferences/c5/zhang.htm
The Role of Grammar
in the Teaching of Writing
to ESL College Students
Ru Zhang Bradley University More and more ESL (English as a Second Language) students come to the United States for their college education every year. "Researchers estimate that by the year 2000, ESL students will make up more than 25% of the college student population; colleges in some large cities have already reached this percentage" (Belanoff et.al. 211). It is critical that ESL teachers provide them with the kind of language skills they need to be successful in college and their future career. Marianne Celce-Murica has said:
There are currently two extreme positions in ESL concerning the teaching of English grammar. At one extreme, the proponents of audio-lingualism (Lado, 1964) and the methodologists such as Gattegno (1972, 1976) argue that we must make grammar the core of our language instruction and that we must correct all student errors. At the other extreme, methodologists such as Krashen and Terrell (1983) tell us not to teach grammar explicitly and not to correct any learner errors (Celce-Murica 4).
Celce-Murica's statement highlights the ongoing debate about grammar in ESL teaching and presents two extreme positions. We should not go to extremes. I have been teaching English as a foreign language in China for more than ten years, and I have been in a Master of Arts program in English for two semesters at Bradley University in Peoria, IL. Having been both an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher and an ESL student, I have developed a more definitive position about the role of English grammar in the teaching and learning of ESL. This paper focuses on whether traditional grammar should be taught to ESL students who come to the U.S. for higher education, and if so, what kind of traditional grammar should be taught and how.

Level 1 I have taken many language courses at the university level, and can confidently say that the program at Middlebury was one of the best I have ever encountered.  The program integrated both academic and social aspects of Russian language and culture giving me a wonderful and time-efficient introduction to a part of the world I knew very little about.  The exceptional skill and patience of my professors matched with the enthusiasm of my fellow students made the Middlebury environment pleasantly challenging.

Introduction
Life styles in the US
Environment

We have to be creative to formulate a syllabus to teach Telugu to our young children in the US. Children can learn on their own if we provide teaching materials that provide fun and entertainment. I am informed by friends and supported by their children that Telugu movies of yester years have acted as teachers of Telugu language! Let us not forget that parents are the first teachers and parents can create an atmosphere conducive to learning Telugu at home. And parents can organize a Telugu school in their communities and act as volunteers or recruit someone who is knowledgeable in Telugu to teach Telugu. If they have enough political clout, they can induce their school to include Telugu as part of their children’s curriculum.
