http://www.geographia.com/sweden/history.html
Heritage and History of Sweden S weden's early history, like its day-to-day life, is intimately wrapped up with the natural rhythms of season and climate. It was the end of the Ice Age that brought the first inhabitants to Scandinavia more than twelve thousand years ago, as the receding glaciers and the warming climate turned barren permafrost into lush plains and vast forests. By 8,000 BC, there were extensive settlements in the region, but dropping temperatures pushed the inhabitants southward to the coasts. A few thousand years later the cycle reversed, and once again the interior became productive, fertile ground. This back and forth movement between the land and the water, between farm and boat, characterizes Swedish culture even today, although the cycle now follows season, holiday, and personal preference. What most people know of Scandinavian history is limited to the Vikings, and what most people know of the Vikings is limited to a vague idea that they were plunderers. In fact, the Vikings of what is now Sweden had a much more lasting impact on history as traders and as founders of some of the great cities of medieval Russia. Embarking from settlements like Birka , tucked deeply and safely within the bays of the Swedish coast, these early seamen headed east and south, establishing trade routes that extended as far as Byzantium and the Golden Caliphate of Baghdad.

His probable birth was May 12 , and he died on September 29 . He became king of Sweden in , but had been elected regent in after leading the rebellion against the sitting Danish monarch. During his reign Protestantism was introduced in Sweden Gustav Vasa was an enigmatic person who has been referred to as both a liberator of the country and as a tyrannic ruler, which has made him the subject of many books. When he got to power in 1523, he was largely unknown, and he became the ruler of a still divded country without a central government. Yet, he managed to remain in power for 37 years, and at his death left behind him a strong central power with uniform rules. In traditional Swedish history he has been labeled the founder of modern Sweden, and the country liberator. Gustav liked to compare himself to

History : Sweden's contact with the rest of Europe is first recorded in the Viking period, when the country traded furs and arms with Russia, along the eastern passage. During the 13th century, a form of feudalism was introduced, a hereditary nobility was established and a thriving middle class of burghers emerged in the towns. Political history in this period is complex but some sense of order, however transitory, was engendered by the accession of Margaret ? then Regent of Denmark and ruler of Norway ? to the throne in 1387. She made an attempt to establish a united Scandinavia (the Union of Kalmar) but this did not last long after her death and, during the 15th century, the nobility were able to do much as they pleased at the expense of royal authority.
The most significant event of this period was the Massacre of Stockholm in 1520, occasioned by Christian of Denmark's ill-judged attempt to reassert his authority in Sweden; this led to a national revolt, headed by Gustav Ericksson Vasa. The Danes were defeated and Gustav was crowned Gustav I in 1523, establishing the House of Vasa and heralding the beginning of Sweden's ascendancy in Europe. Protestantism became firmly established by the Convention of Uppsala in 1593. In 1611, Gustav II Adolf (better known as Gustavus Adolphus), one of the most famous names in Swedish history, became king. Much of the foreign policy of the 17th century was dominated by the desire to transform the Baltic into a Swedish lake ? this was the main motivation behind Gustav II's entry into the Thirty Years' War in 1629.

Swedish Insights on Historical Documentary
The Swedish historian David Ludvigsson (Uppsala University) has recently published an impressive study on historical documentary under the title David Ludvigsson's study can be set into a larger context. During the past decades, there has been a vivid interest in what Germans have called Geschichtskultur , an interest in how history exists in the present day, how history is continuously produced [End Page 95] In recent decades, historians' interest in audiovisual narration has increased in a rising curve. In Scandinavia, such pioneering figures like Niels Skuym-Nielsen and Karsten Fledelius emphasised the significance of audiovisuality already in the 1960s and 1970s and also paid attention on documentaries. Since the 1990s, audiovisual history has been a popular theme for both historians and film scholars. Most publications, however, have concentrated on fiction film while historical documentaries have remained on the margins. What is interesting in Ludvigsson's work is the fact that it focuses on a genre that has often been neglected as a means of telling about the past. The European tradition of historical documentaries has been an unmapped continent. per se The division into three types of considerations arouses another question. Ludvigsson has demonstrated the importance of cognitive, moral and aesthetic considerations by analyzing some of the programs. One of his key examples is

Undermining the Welfare State in Sweden
By Tor Wennerberg
In 1985, the SAP deregulated the credit market. This, in combination with the excess profits created by the devaluation's, led to an orgy of reckless corporate borrowing and speculation in real-estate and stocks. When the bubble burst in 1990, all that remained was financial disaster (worsened by deflationary policies). Between 1988 and 1992, the total credit losses of Swedish banks and financial companies amounted to a staggering Skr 153 billion. There are two major explanations for the free fall of the Swedish economy since 1990: first, a Reaganite tax reform, which explains a large part of the spectacular deterioration of government finances; and second, the complete priority given to the fight against inflation, which pushed the economy into depression, starting under the social democrats but intensifying fatally under the Bildt government that assumed power in 1991. In 1990, the SAP agreed with the small liberal party on a comprehensive tax reform, implemented in January 1991. This reform constituted a watershed in Swedish history. The new tax system did away with the progressive tax rates, which had formed the basis for income redistribution, and drastically lowered government revenue from taxes. The wealthy and high-income earners were given tremendous tax breaks. Corporate taxes were cut from 52 to 30 percent among the lowest in the OECD.

JULY 23 ST. BRIDGET OF SWEDEN
Bridget was born in Sweden in 1303. From the time she was a child, she was greatly devoted to the passion of Jesus. When she was only ten, she seemed to see Jesus on the cross and hear him say, "Look at me, my daughter." "Who has treated you like this?" cried little Bridget. "They who despise me and refuse my love for them," answered Jesus. From then on, Bridget tried to stop people from offending Jesus. When she was fourteen, she married eighteen-year-old Ulf. Like Bridget, Ulf had set his heart on serving God. They had eight children, of whom one was St. Catherine of Sweden. Bridget and Ulf served the Swedish court. Bridget was the queen's personal maid. Bridget tried to help King Magnus and Queen Blanche lead better lives. For the most part, they did not listen to her. All her life, Bridget had marvelous visions and received special messages from God. In obedience to them, she visited many rulers and important people in the Church. She explained humbly what God expected of them. After her husband died, Bridget put away her rich clothes. She lived as a poor nun. Later, she started the order of the Most Holy Savior, also known as Bridgettines. She still kept up her own busy life, traveling about doing good everywhere. And through all this activity, Jesus continued to reveal many secrets to her. These she received without the least bit of pride. Shortly before she died, the saint went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. At the shrines there, she had visions of what Jesus had said and done in that place. All St. Bridget's revelations on the sufferings of Jesus were published after her death. St. Bridget died in Rome on July 23, 1373. She was proclaimed a saint by Pope Boniface IX in 1391.
