A Short History of Sweden
Swedish history comprises more than 10,000 years and starts after the last glacial period. After the melting of the inland ice, the climate became warmer, and settlers seem to have arrived to the northern parts of the country from the east as well as from the south. They lived from hunting, fishing and collecting.
To make a long story short, agriculture was introduced during the Stone Age, and there was a subsequent Bronze Age followed by an Iron Age. The long process of creating political unity started about 1100 A.D.
During the course of its history, Sweden has, of course, received many important influences from abroad. Most prominent was probably the German influence during the Middle Ages, when the Hanseatic League dominated trade in northern Europe. French culture, on the other hand, was adopted at court and among the upper class in the 18th century, while German cultural influence had a revival in the 19th century.
The period from about 1750 to 1850 saw a far-reaching modernization of agriculture. If you compare a map of a rural area from the 18th century with one from today, you will get an idea of what happened in this period. On the old map, living houses, barns etc. belonging to several families were standing close together in a village, perhaps with a church in the middle of it. The cultivated area was split up into several small lots, the result of centuries of inheritance and marriages. The new map, on the other hand, shows separate farms far apart, where each farm has a few large fields around it. The old village has been split up and the farming land redistributed among the families. In addition, pasture-land that used to belong to the villagers collectively has been divided into individual lots and cultivated.

Another advantage was that they were well-equipped. The weapon of choice was the double-edged sword. The finest swords at the time came from Rhineland. Other weapons used were battle-axes, bows, spears and daggers. They used round shields for protection of the body. They also started using chain mail at the end of the Viking Age I. A battle often started by an attack with bows and ended with tough hand-to-hand combats where swords and axes where used. Yet another thing which made the Vikings feared was that they were not afraid of dying in combat. What they really feared was dying at home in bed of disease or age because if a Viking died in combat, as a hero, he would join the gods in Valhalla.

Sweden as a Great Power in the 17th Century The 17th century saw Sweden as an European "Great Power" and one of the major military and political combatants on the continent during the Thirty Years' War. By mid-century, the kingdom included part of Norway, all of Finland and stretched into Russia. Sweden's control of portions of modern Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Germany made the Baltic Sea essentially a Swedish lake. Perhaps inspired by the riches other Great Powers gathered from their overseas colonies, Sweden too sought to extend its influence to the New World. In 1637, Swedish, Dutch and German stockholders formed the New Sweden Company to trade for furs and tobacco in North America. Under the command of Peter Minuit, the company's first expedition sailed from Sweden late in 1637 in two ships, Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip. Minuit had been the governor of the Dutch colony, New Netherland, centered on Manhattan Island, from 1626 to 1631.
The ships reached Delaware Bay in March 1638, and the settlers began to build a fort at the site of present-day Wilmington, Delaware. They named it Fort Christina, in honor of Sweden's twelve-year-old queen. It was the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley.

During the 9th century extensive Scandinavian settlements were made on the east side of the Baltic sea . As early as the reign of Louis I of France Louis the Pious ) in the first half of the 9th century, we hear of Varangians arriving in Constantinople and of piratical expeditions on the Black Sea and on the Caspian Sea . Expeditions such as the possibly legendary ones by Rurik (R¸rik) and Askold (Haskuld) established settlements that resulted in Kievan Rus' . Proofs of extensive Scandinavian settlements in Russia are not only to be found in exensive archaeological remains, but also to be found partly in the names assigned to the Dnieper rapids by Constantine Porphyrogenitus , partly in references to this people made by foreign representatives at the court of the Byzantine Empire . The fact that many of the names which occur in Russian chronicles seem to be peculiarly Swedish suggests that Sweden was the home of the settlers. . A minority view disputes the Swedish origins of at least part of the early Rus, hypothesizing that the princes invited by the population of

        A Brief History
by Eve Andersson Home Travel Sweden : One Article About 14,000 years ago, some of the ice covering what is now Sweden started melting. Evidence has been found that there was human life in Sweden by 9000 BCE. The inhabitants were generally hunters and fishers, until about 550-800 CE when Sweden's inhabitants settled and became a primarily agricultural society. Then, for the next 250 years, they went through a period of expansion (the "Viking Age"), mostly eastward, as far as the Caspian Sea. The vikings' activities consisted of: trading, plundering and making temporary settlements. In about the year 1000, the provinces of Sweden combined to form one country. In was around this time, too, that Sweden became Christianized, although the pagan Nordic religion was still around for another century or so. Sweden continued expanding and had taken over Finland during the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1389, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden united under the Danish Queen Margareta. This union broke up in 1521, after a Danish union king had 80 important Swedish men executed due to conflicts between them and the central government, and the Swedes rebelled.

Known as Gustavus Eriksson before his coronation, he was the son of Erik Johansson, a Swedish senator and follower of the Sture family. Gustavus was treacherously imprisoned by Christian II , the Danish king who was attempting to assert his control over Sweden under the Kalmar Union . In 1520 his father was one of the nationalist leaders killed in the massacre Christian ordered at Stockholm after he had defeated Sweden. Having escaped from prison, Gustavus led the peasants of Dalarna to victory over the Danes and was elected (1521) protector of Sweden. In 1523 the Riksdag at Strangnas elected him king, ending the Kalmar Union. In 1527, Gustavus convinced the Riksdag at Vasteras to establish a national Protestant Church. To help create a strong monarchy, he wanted the revenue controlled by the Roman Catholic Church and a state Church subservient to his needs. Gustavus organized a national army of Swedish volunteers and built an efficient navy. Because the German city of

A long-standing union between the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (including Finland) collapsed in 1523, after which a Swedish Empire rose to dominate Scandinavia until the early 18th century. Russian influence grew, annexing Finland in 1809 (until its independence in 1917), while Denmark and Sweden continued as rivals. Norway became independent of Sweden in 1905, and Iceland in 1918.

    New Sweden, Maine
On July 23, 1870, a Swedish Colony was established by the State of Maine in the virgin forest of Aroostook County. Maine had appointed William Widgery Thomas, Jr. (who had served as Lincoln's Civil War Consul in Sweden) as State Immigration Commissioner. He went to Sweden, recruited the first 51 immigrants, and led them into the township that became New Sweden. Early hardships were overcome and the Colony prospered and grew into the neighboring townships of Westmanland (1879, Stockholm (1881) and the surrounding areas.
    WELCOME - VÄLKOMMEN
MAINE'S SWEDISH COLONY has prepared this booklet to provide you with both an historical perspective on the Colony area, and a map-oriented tour guide to historical and current points of interest.
After a brief introduction as to how the Colony came to be, the contents are organized by townships involved: New Sweden, Stockholm, Woodland (and Perham, Connor, Caribou) Westmanland and Madawaska Lake (T16R4). For each, there is an early history followed by what exists today. The booklet also contains many old (nostalgic) and new photographs. See the Service and Cultural Directory insert for current list of local contacts, places to see, and other information. The front and back covers are shown below.
The following local historical organizations involved in this project are the Historical Societies of New Sweden, Woodland, Stockholm, and Maine's Swedish Colony, Inc. Funding assistance was provided by the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Community Foundation.

A.) The Status of Sweden within the Union of Kalmar, and Swedish-Danish Relations

Since 1397 Sweden was one of the three kingdoms that formed the UNION OF KALMAR, the other two being Denmark and Norway. Union king ERIK OF POMERANIA had been by the nobility of Sweden in 1439, by the nobility of Denmark also in 1439. Erik had moved to the island of Gotland, where he continued to rule, claiming to be King of both Denmark and Sweden, until 1449.
The Danish Council had elected Christoph of Wittelsbach (Bavaria) king in 1440; Sweden had followed in 1441. Christoph had died in 1448, and the Danish Council now elected Christian I. of Oldenburg.
At this point of time, the Swedish Riksrad elected KARL KNUTSSON, co-leader of the rebellion under Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson in 1434 and regent of Sweden 1438-1441, King of Sweden; the Norwegian council also elected Karl Knutsson. While Danish King Christian maintained that the Kalmar Union was not dissolved and he thus had a claim for the crowns of both Norway and Sweden, the island of GOTLAND, claimed both by Sweden and Denmark was an immediate bone of contention. Sweden launched an invasion and got control of the island except the fortress of VISBORG, where Erik XIII. held out. Erik sold out the fortress and his claim to the crown to Christian, and at night Danish soldiers sneaked into the fortress; the Swedes evacuated the island and Gotland again was under Danish control.
