Sweden - History
Sweden early history, like its day-to-day life, is intimately wrapped up with the natural rhythms of season and climate in Sweden. It was the end of the Ice Age that brought the first inhabitants to Sweden more than twelve thousand years ago, as the receding glaciers and the warming climate turned barren permafrost into lush plains and vast forests in Sweden. By 8,000 BC, there were extensive settlements in the sweden region, but dropping temperatures pushed the inhabitants southward to the sweden coasts. A few thousand years later the cycle reversed, and once again the interior became productive, fertile ground. This back and forth movement between the land and the water, between farm and boat, characterizes Sweden culture even today, although the cycle now follows season, holiday, and personal preference. What most people know of Sweden history is limited to the Vikings, and what most people know of the Vikings is limited to a vague idea that they were plunderers. In fact, the Vikings of what is now Sweden had a much more lasting impact on history as traders and as founders of some of the great cities of medieval Russia. Embarking from settlements like Sweden Birka, tucked deeply and safely within the bays of the Swedish coast, these early seamen headed east and south, establishing trade routes that extended as far as Byzantium and the Golden Caliphate of Baghdad. At the turn of the millennium, after about two centuries of prosperity and power, the trade empire of the Vikings began to decline. Continental Europe began its economic rise, and the power of the Vikings in Sweden lands was supplanted by the newly prosperous farmers of the interior plains.

Date the Town was founded: April 5, 1814
Who founded the Town: On the evening of April 5, 1814, the Town of Sweden was born at a town meeting held at the home of Reuben Stickney, on the corner of Lake and Swamp Roads. This meeting was held in accordance with the April 1813, State Legislature enacted bill which required the large township of Genesee County to be split into three new towns named Bergen, Sweden and Murray.
Sweden, Township 3 of the Triangular Tract, was incorporated in 1814 and included, at that time, the Town of Clarendon in Orleans County. The Triangular Tract lies between the Phelps and Gorham Purchase and the Holland Purchase on the west. Originally owned by Robert Morris, purchased in 1801 by LeRoy, Boyard and Everts of New York City, it was surveyed and laid out into lots that same year by Richard Stoddard. In 1802, Lake Road was opened from LeRoy to Lake Ontario which allowed access and purchase of lots.
Population of the Town: 13,716 (2000 census)

History
The Viking Age, 800-1050, was characterised by a marked expansion, which in the case of Sweden was mainly directed eastwards. The Vikings, active in the east, travelled as far as the Black and Caspian Seas, where they developed trading links with the Byzantine Empire and the Arab dominions. At the same time, Christianity first reached Sweden with the mission of Ansgar, who visited the country from the Carolingian Empire in the ninth century. Sweden's expansion in the east continued during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries through the incorporation of Finland into the Swedish kingdom after several crusades. After its defeat in the Great Northern War (1700-21) against the combined forces of Denmark, Poland and Russia, Sweden lost most of its provinces on the other side of the Baltic and was reduced to largely the same frontiers as present day Sweden and Finland. During the Napoleonic Wars, Finland was finally surrendered to Russia and Sweden's last possessions in northern Germany were also lost. As compensation for these losses, the French marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, who had been elected heir to the Swedish throne in 1810, succeeded in obtaining Norway, which was forced into a union with Sweden in 1814. This union was peacefully dissolved in 1905 after many internal disputes. Nineteenth-century Sweden was also marked by the emergence of strong popular movements like the free churches, the temperance and feminist movements and, above all, the labour movement. The latter, which grew in pace with industrialisation in the second half of the nineteenth century, was reformative in outlook after the turn of the century and the first representatives of social democracy entered the government as early as 1917. Universal suffrage was introduced for men in 1909 and for women in 1921, and this latter date also marked the breakthrough for the principle of parliamentary government. Plans for a welfare society were laid during the 1930s after the Social Democrats had become the governing party, and it proved possible to put these plans into effect in all essentials after the Second World War.

Sweden Time and Date Sweden History Back to Top During the seventh and eighth centuries, the Swedes were merchant seamen well known for their far-reaching trade. In the ninth century, Nordic Vikings raided and ravaged the European Continent as far as the black and Caspian Seas. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Sweden gradually became a unified Christian kingdom that later included Finland. Queen Margaret of Denmark united all the Nordic lands in the "Kalmar Union" in 1397. Continual tension within the countries and within the union gradually led to open conflict between the Swedes and the Danes in the 15th century. The union's final disintegration in the early 16th century brought on a long-lived rivalry between Norway and Denmark on one side and Sweden and Finland on the other During and after World War I, in which Sweden remained neutral, the nation benefited from the worldwide demand for Swedish steel, ball bearings, wood pulp, and matches. Postwar prosperity provided the foundations for the social welfare policies characteristic of modern Sweden. Foreign policy concerns in the 1930s centered on Soviet and German developmentism, which stimulated abortive efforts at Nordic defense cooperation. Sweden followed a policy of armed neutrality during World War II and currently remains nonaligned. Sweden became a member of the European Union in 1995.

Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements has recently been undermined by high unemployment, rising maintenance costs, and a declining position in world markets. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe caused Sweden not to join the EU until 1995, and to forgo the introduction of the euro in 1999. Pre NHL History Hernrik Zetterberg hails from the small East Coast town of Njurunda, Sweden. Growing up he played hockey almost everyday with his friends. During the summer months, after hockey season had come to a close, the same group of friends would gather for exhilarating games of soccer. Henrik Zetterberg started his senior career in 1997 with Timrå in the Swedish division 1, as a 16 year old. He managed to play in 20 games and scored a goal and 3 assists. In his draft year he saw his ice-time increase, and so did his numbers. He scored 17 goals and 14 assists in only 41 games. His great performance helped his team to move up to Allsvenskan for the 1999-00 season. After finishing as the 41st ranked European skater by the final 1999 CSB Rankings, Henrik Zetterberg was selected by the Red Wings with their 4th selection, 210th overall in the 1999 Entry Draft. “ There’s quite a bit of hype surrounding Henrik this season – and for good reason. He’s very intelligent on the ice and his vision is excellent. But it was kind of fluke that we discovered him in
