188. Biography: Erik, King Of Sweden, Martyr (17 May 1160)
Short hagiography. With prayer in traditional and contemporary language.
http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/05/17.html
Erik, King of Sweden, Martyr
17 May 1160
Erik IX Jedvardsson was ruler of much of Sweden from 1150 to 1160. He was the head of a Christian kingdom with nearby pagan kingdoms, all sharing an old tradition of fighting. Around 1155, he headed an expedition into Finland, then loosely under Swedish rule, to consolidate Swedish authority there and to establish a protected Christian mission, headed by Henry of Uppsala, now considered the founder of the Church in Finland (see 19 Jan). Erik is also known for undertaking to provide Sweden with fair laws and fair courts, and for measures designed to assist the poor and the infirm. As he was in church on 18 May 1160, the day after Ascension Day, he was told that a pagan Danish army was approaching to kill him. He replied, "Let us at least finish the sacrifice. The rest of the feast I shall keep elsewhere." As he was leaving the church, the pagans rushed upon him and killed him. Erik was honored both as an upholder of the Christian faith and as a national hero, the ancestor of a long line of Swedish kings. Within thirty years after his death his name appeared on the Swedish Calendar, and he is accounted the principal patron of Sweden, as (for example) Patrick is of Irelend. The silver casket with his remains still rests in the cathedral at Uppsala.

EUROPEAN EMIGRATION
Swedish emigration to America is rather typical for European emigration westward to America during the 19th century. Therefore, we have elected to present the background of the Swedish emigration at that time. Painting "The Emigrants" by Swedish artist Knut Ekwall, (1843-1912). This painting depicts the artist's vision of what the Atlantic crossings could be like for the immigrants. Courtesy by Lena Björk Kaplan, President of the American Scandinavian Foundation in New York, owner of this beautiful work.
A Review of Swedish Emigration to America The history of Swedish emigration to America goes further back in time than that of the United States. Swedes started to come in 1638, just eighteen years after the landing of the "MAYFLOWER." The tidal wave of Swedish emigration began in the mid 1840s, when the first organized emigrant groups started to arrive in New York. These farmers destined to Iowa and Illinois were followed during the period up to 1930 by almost 1.3 million countrymen. The Swedes still rank number seven among the European immigrant groups. In proportion to the population of their home countries, only the British Isles and Norway surpassed Sweden in the number of immigrants. The effect of this exodus from Sweden reached its climax around 1910, when 1.4 million Swedish first and second generation immigrants were listed as living in the U.S. Compare this to Sweden's population at the time: 5.5 million. Roughly one fifth of all Swedes had their homes in America right before World War I !

Martin takes charge in Sweden
Story Tools KARLSTAD, Sweden (Reuters) Estonian Markko Martin led the Swedish Rally to take charge of an event previously won only by Finns and Swedes. The Ford driver seized the lead on the third Granberget stage, the longest of the rally, after a power steering failure slowed former champion Marcus Gronholm's bid for a fourth win in five years. Martin was fastest again on the fourth stage, a second run through the 52km Granberget, to end the day 23.3 seconds clear of Citroen's Sebastien Loeb. Frenchman Loeb, the championship leader, was still fighting hard, winning Friday's final 1.86km Hagfors sprint. Peugeot's Gronholm had made a quick start, winning the first stage in his new 307 car and leading Spain's Carlos Sainz by 3.3 seconds after the second, but the steering problem cost him almost a minute. "We lost the power steering and it was quite difficult to drive," the Finn told the official WRC Web site. "I tried for a while to go as fast as possible but it was dangerous. You could not let it (the car) go sideways."

I worked for 2 years (1997-1999) in Sweden (in Uppsala). This is a very photogenic country, with great nature. In winter, the snow, the pure blue sky and the low sunlight make great conditions for pictures. The problem is, you have to cope with the cold. In the summer, the days are long and sunsets last for hours, melting in sunrise if you are north enough in country. Uppsala is a small town, with the oldest university in Scandinavia and some fine architecture.

Biographical sketch. With prayer in traditional and contemporary language.
http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/07/23.html
Birgitta of Sweden, Foundress and Devotional Writer
23 July 1373
Birgitta (Bridget) Birgerstotter was born in Sweden about 1303, daughter of the governor of the province of Upland. As a child, she began to have dreams about the suffering of Christ. She was married at 13 to Ulf Gundarsson, son of the governor of the province of West Gothland. They had four offspring. In 1335 she became chief lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Sweden. In 1341, she and her husband made a pilgrimage to Compostela in Spain, and on the return trip her husband fell ill and died soon after. Birgitta began to live a more ascetic life. Her dreams and visions grew more frequent and vivid, and became more and more the focus of her life. She devoted her life to prayer, to assisting the poor and needy, and to speaking plainly to those in power. She mediated between warring rulers, and warned the Pope at Avignon that it was his duty to return to Rome. In 1351 she founded an order of both monks and nuns, to be governed by an abbess. The order, the Order of the Holy Savior, popularly called the Brigittines, spread through Europe, and was an important educational influence. Today, the Society of St. Birgitta in Sweden is a laypersons' society that seeks to carry on her work. She is known for her Revelations , which are largely meditations on the Passion of Our Lord. Social Insurance in Sweden
Introducing the Insurance Office
This text gives a brief introduction to social insurance in Sweden. Social insurance is founded on the idea of people helping each other through a kind of social safety net, which is in place from birth to retirement. The role of the Insurance Office is to administer social insurance and to ensure that you get the benefits and allowances to which you are entitled. To be covered by or to be eligible for a social insurance benefit, you must, as a rule, either be resident in Sweden or be working here. Examples of residence-based benefits are child allowance, housing allowance and allowance for medical expenses. If you work in Sweden, you are insured for employment-based benefits, which include sickness benefit and rehabilitation compensation.
