THE DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION
Keith Montgomery

Department of Geography and Geology
The "Demographic Transition" is a model that describes population change over time. It is based on an interpretation begun in 1929 by the American demographer Warren Thompson, of the observed changes, or transitions , in birth and death rates in industrialized societies over the past two hundred years or so. By "model" we mean that it is an idealized, composite picture of population change in these countries. The model is a generalization that applies to these countries as a group and may not accurately describe all individual cases. Whether or not it applies to less developed societies today remains to be seen. Before proceeding you should review some demographic terminology or be sure to follow the links given below as the terms arise The model is illustrated below: As shown, there are four stages of transition. They will be described first in terms of a typical fully developed country today, such as The United States or Canada, the countries of Europe, or similar societies elsewhere (e.g. Japan, Australia etc.). STAGE ONE is associated with pre Modern times, and is characterized by a balance between

PhD Student, Human Geography malin.zillinger@etour.se Telefon: Address: ETOUR, S 831 25 –STERSUND, SWEDEN Background:
I studied Geography at the Westf¤lische Wilhelms-Universit¤t in Muenster , Germany From 1996 until 2002. My focus was on economic geography and tourism. In 2000/2001, I worked at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, where I led a project which concentrated on Swedish tourists in Germany . This topic then became the subject of my degree dissertation. Since 2002, I am working as a PhD Student at ETOUR.
    Research interests:
As a geographer, I am interested in tourists' spatial behaviour during their holidays in Sweden . Where, when and why do tourists travel the way they do? Within a concentration on international tourism, I focus on German tourists in Sweden . As Germans have for a long time been intensive users of guidebooks, I pay special attention on the influence of guidebooks on the tourists choice of destinations. Another project deals with Germans' travel routes in Sweden .
    Projects:
German tourists' travel routes in Sweden The influence of guidebooks on German tourists' travel destinations in Sweden Organising Tourism Development in Peripheral Areas - The Case of the Subarctic Network in Northern Sweden A lot of research has been done on the wanderlust of the German population. However, little investigation has been focussed on actual facts about the travel routs both in the home country and abroad. By the way, this statement is not only true for travels conducted by the Germans. In fact, only little is known about individual travel routs in general.
