Sweden and big cities. The red boarders are regional parts. Sweden has an area of 450,000 km 2 (174,000 sq. mi.) similar to California, Cameroon, Iraq, Spain or Thailand. Half its land surface is covered with forest. Less than 10% is farmland. Nearly 100,000 lakes dot the countryside, which is relatively flat. A long mountain chain in the northwest reaches heights of up to 2,111 m (6,926 ft). There are thousands of islands along the jagged coast. The warm Gulf Stream in the Atlantic gives Sweden a milder climate than other areas equally far north. Stockholm, the capital, is at almost the same latitude as southern Greenland but has an average temperature of about +18°C (64°F) in July. The winter temperatures average slightly below freezing and snowfall is moderate. Far northern Sweden has long and cold winters and bright summers of moderate temperatures; in June and July daylights lasts around the clock. Geography Sweden, country in northern Europe, occupying the eastern portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Sweden has a total area of 449,964 sq km (173,732 sq mi). Stockholm is the capital and largest city. Sweden's topography consists of high mountains in the northwest, bounded on the east by a plateau that slopes down to lowlands and plains in the east and south. Many rivers flow southeast from the mountains to the Gulf of Bothnia, providing abundant waterpower. One-seventh of Sweden is above the Arctic Circle, where daylight is continuous for about two months in the summer and darkness is continuous for about two months in the winter.

    Historical Geography and Landscape Studies
For a number of years the corner-stone of research at the Department of Human Geography in Stockholm has been that into pre-industrial rural landscapes. When David Hannerberg was called to the chair at Stockholm in 1956 he laid the foundation of the modern approach to retrogressive landscape history. His successors, Professors Staffan Helmfrid, Ulf Sporrong and Mats Widgren have continued to develop this line of research. The wealth of detail found in the cadastral maps of the 17th and 18th centuries was originally the main source of material for this research, but field methods have subsequently been used to an increasing extent. By these means the chronological framework of the studies has been widened to cover prehistoric periods.
The research within this field now covers a wide range of problems and geographical areas. A research programme on property rights and the landscape was launched in the 1980s and has resulted in works on the subdivision of fields, inheritance systems in different parts of Sweden and Finland, the influence of big landowners and recently on commons as institutions. Much research and development has also been carried out at the interface between applied landscape management and research work. The use of old cadastral maps for planning purposes and the integration of landscape history into computerized systems of landscape analysis are also themes within this framework. Landscape history in Eastern and Southern Africa is another growing sector of research, carried out in co-operation with the theme

Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook Sweden Introduction Sweden Background: A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars. Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements was challenged in the 1990s by high unemployment and in 2000-02 by the global economic downturn, but fiscal discipline over the past several years has allowed the country to weather economic vagaries. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe delayed Sweden's entry into the EU until 1995, and waived the introduction of the euro in 1999. For some Swedish towns and provinces there actually exist English forms of the names, but in the news group and in this faq you will discover that Gothenburg and Göteborg, Scania and Skåne or Dalecarlia and Dalarna are used interchangeably without any intended difference in meaning. Sweden occupies the Eastern part of the Scandinavian peninsula. It's a long (1572 kilometers) and rather narrow country, and the largest of the Nordic countries. It shares a long border with Norway to the west and a shorter border with Finland in the east; Denmark lies to the south across the Danish straits, over one of which (Öresund) a huge bridge is being built. The Baltic Sea islands of Gotland and Öland are integral parts of Sweden. Norrland is on the map the dominating region of Sweden. Norrland - that is the northernmost two thirds of the country, where almost no people live. Except at the mines and along the coast. Northwestern Sweden is crossed by an ancient mountain chain; the remainder of the north is a southeast-sloping plateau that rises to between 200 and 500 meters.

Casting about for a broad social science field that had ample room for humanistic concerns, I stumbled into the geography program, little realizing the effect it would have on my future. I gradually weaned myself from arcana, learning solid positivistic methods, and concentrating on urban historical issues. Along the way, I picked up one term's worth of Swedish, the better to be able to read Torsten H"gerstrand's recent works (at my advisor's suggestion).
