Sweden - History
Sweden early history, like its day-to-day life, is intimately wrapped up with the natural rhythms of season and climate in Sweden. It was the end of the Ice Age that brought the first inhabitants to Sweden more than twelve thousand years ago, as the receding glaciers and the warming climate turned barren permafrost into lush plains and vast forests in Sweden. By 8,000 BC, there were extensive settlements in the sweden region, but dropping temperatures pushed the inhabitants southward to the sweden coasts. A few thousand years later the cycle reversed, and once again the interior became productive, fertile ground. This back and forth movement between the land and the water, between farm and boat, characterizes Sweden culture even today, although the cycle now follows season, holiday, and personal preference. What most people know of Sweden history is limited to the Vikings, and what most people know of the Vikings is limited to a vague idea that they were plunderers. In fact, the Vikings of what is now Sweden had a much more lasting impact on history as traders and as founders of some of the great cities of medieval Russia. Embarking from settlements like Sweden Birka, tucked deeply and safely within the bays of the Swedish coast, these early seamen headed east and south, establishing trade routes that extended as far as Byzantium and the Golden Caliphate of Baghdad. At the turn of the millennium, after about two centuries of prosperity and power, the trade empire of the Vikings began to decline. Continental Europe began its economic rise, and the power of the Vikings in Sweden lands was supplanted by the newly prosperous farmers of the interior plains.

23. Culture: A Short History Of Sweden
Although some people regard this as a form of cultural imperialism , hard to imagine what life would be like in a monolithic, purely Swedish culture.
http://www.sverigeturism.se/smorgasbord/smorgasbord/culture/short-history/
A Short History of Sweden
Swedish history comprises more than 10,000 years and starts after the last glacial period. After the melting of the inland ice, the climate became warmer, and settlers seem to have arrived to the northern parts of the country from the east as well as from the south. They lived from hunting, fishing and collecting.
To make a long story short, agriculture was introduced during the Stone Age, and there was a subsequent Bronze Age followed by an Iron Age. The long process of creating political unity started about 1100 A.D.
During the course of its history, Sweden has, of course, received many important influences from abroad. Most prominent was probably the German influence during the Middle Ages, when the Hanseatic League dominated trade in northern Europe. French culture, on the other hand, was adopted at court and among the upper class in the 18th century, while German cultural influence had a revival in the 19th century.
The period from about 1750 to 1850 saw a far-reaching modernization of agriculture. If you compare a map of a rural area from the 18th century with one from today, you will get an idea of what happened in this period. On the old map, living houses, barns etc. belonging to several families were standing close together in a village, perhaps with a church in the middle of it. The cultivated area was split up into several small lots, the result of centuries of inheritance and marriages. The new map, on the other hand, shows separate farms far apart, where each farm has a few large fields around it. The old village has been split up and the farming land redistributed among the families. In addition, pasture-land that used to belong to the villagers collectively has been divided into individual lots and cultivated.

It is undoubtedly through the export of its culture that sweden has had its greatest impact upon the world. From the strong, clean design sensibility of its
http://www.geographia.com/sweden/culture.html
Sweden's Culture I Swedish design and architecture are best known through their contribution to the functionalist movement, which in the 1930s introduced the world to the clean, sophisticated designs that we now associate as much with modernism itself as with Scandinavia and Sweden in particular. Among the notable figures in this movement was the architect Erik Gunnar Asplund. In literature, Sweden is best known for the groundbreaking works of August Strindberg, one of the original badboys of modernism. Among Sweden's many other internationally-known writers are Selma Lagerlöf, Vilhelm Moberg, Pär Lagerkvist and Astrid Lindgren, the last of whom is better known through the name of her most famous character, Pippi Longstocking. Without question, the most universally venerated aspect of Swedish culture is film. Ingmar Bergman, Greta Garbo, Max von Sydow, Liv Ullman, Anita Ekberg, and Ingrid Bergman, all Swedes, are all among the greatest names in cinema history. Bergman's visually sensuous and psychologically intimate films created a worldwide sensation in the 1950s and 1960s, and he ranks today among the best loved and most influential filmmakers of all time. Among Bergman's masterworks are Wild Strawberries, Smiles of a Summer Night, The Seventh Seal, Cries and Whispers, Autumn Sonata, Scenes from a Marriage

Katalin welcomes you. Copenhagen . I have also chosen a lovely building of the many there are in this city. It is Rundetaarn (The Round Tower), built in 1642 by the king Christian IV, the last Danish king reigning over Scania - Scandinavia in Latin). It is a rather high tower (34,8 m), nice to look at, but even to visit. It is open around the year, giving place to concerts, exhibitions and even contains an observatiorium. It will take you 30 minutes to the third biggest town in Sweden. The bridge was by the way opened on the 1 July 2000! Scania is a nice place to live in. I have been living there for almost 30 years now. I was born in Hungary, where I lived until 1972, when I moved to Sweden. I have been living in Sweden in a little town called Lund ever since. I am in contact with Hungarians through the Hungarian association that has been around since 1947 in Lund and even through my main interest: research. Lund used to be the capital of Denmark a thousand years ago....It is a rather old and very picturesque city By the way, the final battle was just outside Lund, in 1676, and in that Scania was finally lost and became inavitably Swedish. In order to Swedenize the inhabitants of Scania as soon as possible, the king of all Swedes, Karl XI gave order that a university should be built in Lund. (Knowledge is power, as we know it.) His order was hastily carried out, so as a result, now we have a big

Christ to Bishop Hemming, in St Birgitta, Revelationes I.52
Bishop Hemming and St Birgitta, Urdiala, Finland
D uring many of her Revelations, St Birgitta of Sweden (1303-1373) heard Christ and the Virgin reveal the will of God, which she was to pass on to secular and clerical rulers, as well as to common people. These messages often fiercely urged their recipients to repent so that their souls would be saved from divine anger, and God's peace could rule the world. The spiritual messages were intertwined with visions for the practical reform of the church and secular kingdoms, which in Birgitta's day were troubled by wars, the Papacy's dislocation in Avignon (1309-1377) and epidemic of the plague later known as the Black Death (1347-1351). Bishop Hemming and Prior Peter made their journey between 1346 and 1349. Their mission was to deliver to the Pope Birgitta's Revelation which lamented the decline of the Papacy. This Brigittine Revelation urged the Pope to reform his own lasciviousness, to cease supporting the King of France, and to return the Papal See to Rome. In Birgitta's Revelation Christ spoke directly to Clement:
It will not remain a secret how at your time greed and ambition flourished in the Church, and how many things you could have reformed and improved, but you, lover of the flesh, balked.

    The problem
    Culture

Culture is that which makes communication and misunderstanding possible, and it is also the continuously generated result of ongoing processes of communication. It is not a fixed entity, nor can it be delimited to a community of individuals. To myself, there is no doubt that I share more in terms of culture with some of my informants from anthropological fieldwork in Mauritius and Trinidad than with my next-door neighbours in Oslo. In general, as interacting human beings we are closer than ships passing in the night, but tightly knit communities with shared values and ideas are rarer than many social scientists have been wont to think.
Mauritius Patrick Patrick and his brothers frequently rent video films; many of them are low-budget Hong Kong kung-fu films; others are American films dubbed in French. He says that the criterion for a good film is its ability to stir the sentiments of the audience, and both violent and romantic films are in his view capable of that.
