Main article: History of Swaziland Human remains and artifacts from more than 100,000 years ago have been found in Swaziland. Evidence of agriculture and iron use dates from about the 4th century , and people speaking languages ancestral to current Sotho and Nguni languages began settling no later than the 11th century . The ruling Dlamini lineage had chiefships in the region in the 18th century . An enlarged Swazi kingdom was established by Sobhuza I in the early 19th century . Soon thereafter the first whites started to settle in the area. In the the South African Republic in the Transvaal claimed sovereignty over Swaziland but never fully established power. After the

Swazi History
Books To Read On Swazi History
By Richard M. Patricks, SNTC. July 2000. MATSEBULA, J. S. M., "A History of Swaziland" - 3 editions: 1972, 1976 and 1988.
Still the only full length book that covers Swazi history from the earliest times to the present. Matsebula (Chief Executive Officer of the SNTC for 20 years) deserves praise as the only person, Swazi or non-Swazi, who has attempted a complete Swazi history. Available at Webster's Bookshops, Mbabane and Manzini, and other bookshops. Books below may be found at Websters, but usually need to be ordered BONNER, Philip: "Kings, Concessionaires and Commoners" 1983, Cambridge.
Written by a Wits professor, the book examines Swazi history 1800-1889, or the reigns of Sobhuza I (Somhlolo), Mswati II and Mbandzeni. The last chapter is a summary of the book. KUPER Hilda, "The Swazi" 1963
By a social anthropologist, this is condensation of her earlier works like "African Aristocracy" (1947) and others. Chapter One gives history. KUPER, Hilda, "A Biography of King Sobhuza II" 1976
This is the official biography, commissioned by King Sobhuza himself, but it is equally a history of Swaziland in the 20th century. Most chapters are very readable: here Kuper writes more in the style of a novelist then an anthropologist.

Culture. Urban Swazis, despite a very 21st century lifestyle, still maintain firm links to the rural areas where water is fetched from the river and cooking takes place in a three-legged pot over an open fire. Here you can watch the people of the land wearing traditional dress and singing the songs of their ancestors while performing ancient ritual dances. You may see many Swazi's dress in colorful costume, featuring toga-like garments known as the mahiya and the women with the traditional "beehive" hairstyles. There are a large variety of local dishes, most of which are based on traditional recipes such as samp and meat. Ritual Ceremonies. Two major traditional ceremonies are held in Swaziland annually: The Incwala and the Umhlanga Reed Dance. The Incwala is the sacred ceremony of Kingship, a mystical right of powerful spiritual significance for the nation. The Incwala begins on the new moon closest to the longest day between December and January. The Incwala is the most sacred annual event and spectators are permitted, but not encouraged. The climax of the Incwala is the fourth day, during which the King ceremoniously eats the first fruits of the new harvest.

BEHIND THE MASK a website on gay and lesbian affairs in Africa swaziland amantanyula
by Ishy July 2002: I was reading the Swaziland 'What's On' and there was a revue of the book called (Emajaha Ekuluseni) meaning, 'boys in the field looking after the cattle'. And the subject of sexuality came up. It was the "amantanyula" or, boy's doing each other while looking after the cattle that grabbed me the most. The question is, as amantanyula is an African word and sodomy a western one, are they different things? My understanding is that amantanyula means sodomy. I may be wrong but many Africans do not have a problem with amantanyula but would have a problem with sodomy. Talking about freedom of sexuality, we are not talking constitutionally, but culturally. Is it African to be gay or not? The book takes a very African point of view. Most of the young Swazi boys in the book grew up in the late 1980s and slept with other boys, and yet would still regard themselves as African. African boys who happen to take it up the ass as a boy. But we all grow up in a different way, in a different Africa. Isn't that so?

SWAZILAND - GENERAL INFORMATION The Swaziland is one of the last true monarchs remaining in southern Africa.
The Kingdom comprises a little more than 17 000 squire kilometres, is landlocked between South Africa and Mozambique. There is so much diversity in such a small territory; mountains, forests, valleys and besides the scenic diversity one can explore some of the safari experiences on offer or indulge in the rich cultural heritage of the Swazi people. The Swazi are traditionally artist by nature and most neighbourhoods along the main routes display their arts and crafts at the various roadside markets.
